Title: Fantasy 10@10s
Post by: dischead on August 12, 2013, 10:25:08 PM

Congratulations!  You're King of the World!

Uh, would you believe King of 10@10?  How about King of 10@10 in your own mind?

Post your fantasy, dream, wish-list, etc. 10@10 set lists here.  Who knows -- maybe your
dream will come true!

Idea for a 10@10 that would be interesting:

Ten Great Songs, One Great Name!

"I Want You" I think would be a possibility.

I've always wanted to do an all-Peter Green set.  I think it could be a mystery set that most regular KFOG listeners wouldn't be able to figure out for at least a few songs.

Do you mean ten different songs with the same title, or ten covers of the same song?

I know of only three songs that have "I Want You" in the title.  I think ten covers of the same
song (Willie & The Hand Jive, Louie Louie, Johnny B. Goode?) would be a funny April Fool's set.

The general idea is ten different songs with the same title.

If there is a cover version that is significantly different than the original, I would consider it. An example of what would not be acceptable would be playing both the Wings and Semisonic versions of "Jet".

One of my favorite song categories is songs about being a rock star, or, in the case of Eddie Money, wanting to be a rock star.  They aren't usually great songs, but they do have a twisted authenticity to them -- after all, you should write about what you know.

A small selection of some of my ideas for fantasy 10@10 theme sets... not all of them have been
filled out with ten songs.

prog rock:  ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant, (early) Genesis, King Crimson, Curved Air...

jazz fusion:  Miles Davis, Weather Report, Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Chic Corea...

songs that prominently feature a particular instrument in the melody, bridge, solo, etc.
pop flute (easy)
pop oboe (moderately difficult)
pop french horn (hard)

goofy dance music:  Walk Like An Egyptian, Rico Suave, I'm Too Sexy, Macarena, Mambo No. 5...

Gil Scott-Heron tribute:  musician, poet, visionary

pot - Rita Marley's "One Draw"... I thought of good clip for this one, but then I forgot what it was...

I just compiled a set of ten songs in my head -- I'll probably have this done sometime tomorrow,
unless I come  up with some other numbers to chose from.  Wonder how this one will turn out...

"Ten great songs, one great instrument!"  ;)

Yabbut are they songs that anybody has heard before, much less heard of...  I've got four or
five songs on my list, and they're all well-known titles.  I'll be interested to see what you have.

In light of Sunday's holiday, here are my notes for a potential 10@10 show celebrating the
same.  Befitting my status as an older fogey, I have confined myself to earlier material.  No
doubt someone could construct another whole set with songs from the last twenty-five years
or so.  I was going to post this earlier in the week, but um...  uh...  yeah.

1. Toyes - Smoke Two Joints [1]
2. Cab Calloway - Reefer Man
3. Ray Charles - Let's Go Get Stoned
4. Rolling Stones - Stoned
5. Fraternity of Man - Don't Bogart Me
6. New Riders of the Purple Sage - Henry
7. Arlo Guthrie - Coming Into Los Angles [2]
8. Shel Silverstein - The Smoke-Off
9. Shel Silverstein - I Got Stoned and I Missed It [3]
10.Rita Marley - One Draw [4]

Notes:
[1] Get it over with.
[2] From the Woodstock soundtrack.  Include "marijuana:
exhibit A" intro and Arlo's post-song rap through "lot of freaks!."
[3] A Shel Silverstein two-fer!
[4] The extended version, of course.

Honorable mention:
Fifth Dimension - Stoned Soul Picnic
New Riders of the Purple Sage - Panama Red
Brewer & Shipley - One Toke Over the Line
Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen - Seeds & Stems (Again)

clip suggestions:

- Woodstock soundtrack: "marijuana:  exhibit A" --> Arlo --> "lot of freaks!"

- Firesign Theatre:  The Further Adventures of Nick Danger:

"Tea, madam?"
"Far out, Catherwood -- just roll a couple of bombers and leave them on the side table."

and

"How did you get in here?  You don't have a key!"
"No, only half a key -- I had to split it with the sound effects man."

- Cheech & Chong:  Let's Make A Dope Deal:

"How many joints are in a lid?"
"Two!"
"Two?!?"
"Yeah, I roll big joints!"
"Our judges say that's okay -- they roll big joints too!"

- Cheech & Chong:  Acapulco Gold Filters:

"No stems or seeds that you don't need..."

- A Children's Garden of Grass

I don't own it, and while it certainly has potential material, I don't remember anything
specific (heh).

- The Sonny Bono film, "Marijuana"

Great stuff here, as we recently heard.

As a memorial on the third anniversary of his passing, I offer a potential 10@10 set of my favorite
works from Gil Scott-Heron:  musician, poet, visionary.  While many notable musical talents have
been lost in the struggle with drug (ab)use, I think that his was perhaps the greatest loss.

1. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
2. Lady Day and John Coltrane
3. Johannesburg
4. Winter In America
5. Racetrack In France
6. Shut Um Down
7. Blue Collar
8. Inner City Blues
9. Gun
10.B Movie

If I had to recommend just one song, I'd go with B Movie -- its rap will grab you from the
first line, and thirty years later it's still very relevant.  I found it uncannily prescient in the months
before the 2008 Presidential election.  It's long though, and gets repetitive at the end, so if you're
pressed for time, try Gun.  It's about four minutes of an upbeat, surprisingly danceable R&B
tune with spot-on lyrics that are still applicable today.  If there was any justice in the world, this
would have been a big hit in 1981.
