Title: KFOG A-to-Z 2012
Post by: RGMike on May 12, 2012, 04:58:29 PM
Figured we'd give this it's own thread. If it's really gonna last 'til Memorial Day, that would make it one of the longest (if not THE longest) A-to-Z ever. Will it be loaded with clues as to a possible flip to a new format, or will it be the hail-and-farewell of the current one? Will 10@10 be pre-empted this time? Will it be voice-tracked in the morning? (I can't ever remember an A-to-Z that didn't have a Morning crew talking about it, but with no Webster it seems that might be the way they'll go.) Inquiring minds wanna know.

So far so... standard.  A-to-Z kicked off with Genesis' "Abacab" and the first hour included the Beatles (Across the Universe), Costello (Accidents Will Happen) and TWO versions of Crapton's "After Midnight". Your usual usual, judged against past A-to-Z's.

I wish they'd post an index somewhere.  The tunegenie is kaput.

I tuned away and just tuned back to hear the end of The Cars' All Mixed Up.  Kudos for that.

First appearance of the Foo Fighters?  All My Life sounded like Live 105 for Tweens.

Uh, Greg, that story about being in a men's room and seeing Ric Ocasek doesm't officially count as "meeting" him.   Unless it was after a wide stance foot tap.

Playing some weird stuff that they've never played before, Counting Crows and Foo Fighters. Guess it's not weird, just no way these songs are (or ever were) in the playlist.

Sure, CC "All My Friends" and FF "All My Life". The playlist on their website is working.

I'm guessing the Greg Gory is just filling in until the new and exciting morning show is rolled out. He blander than bland, but maybe that's what they're going for...

that was apparently a TuneGenie issue rather than a KFOG problem -- The Peak's was also not working earlier.

And Gory solo has indeed been less than stellar. But he seems to be more upbeat than previously and I think THAT is what they want in the morning.

I like the sound of Gory's voice, but if he lets loose with some of his own "personality," that could change.  Who knows?

During the 'news' segment at about 6:05 he chimed in with his own commentary at least 3x. I don't necessarily mind a little conversation, but he seemed a bit unprofessional in the doing.

I admit I was still sleeping at that time.  It might've sounded unprofessional because he does sound rather professional usually.  was it his content?  Broadcast standard pronunciation, nice baritone -- doesn't flub words.  He's a good second (or third) banana, I suppose, but he's not meant to carry all the weight of a wacky morning zoo show, or whatever The Mourning After will offer -- at least I hope not.

I was afraid some of our Clapton-haters would be making a dissimilar comment when I heard that this afternoon!

on the way home, a perfect illustration of the revisionist history of this regime's A-Z: Baker St followed by Social Distortion.  SD was never played on KFOG, and for good reason.  But now, it's part of the darling playlist.  I know some really like them, but the plodding chainsaw guitars and whiny vocals just give me a headache.  But then again, I'm the demographic that's being encouraged to leave.

It's definitely beeen a mixed bag, but so far I'm digging it at least as much for the non-repeatign aspect as anything else.

This might have been the deepest dive so far:  Annalisa played "Aquamarine" by Santana, which I've never even heard before & she said she'd never aired before.  Good tune though.

Today at the top of the 9:00 hour they played a couple of "Breakdown"s, Petty & Jack Johnson, and then went to commercial.  I called & GG picked up & I asked if he could play one more Breakdown, namely Alan Parsons Project.  He said he would try to find it before the commercials ended, and I felt like he really meant it, even though the next song out of the break was "Breakfast In America".  Oh Well...

But at least I took some consolation in thinking we'd be spared the Deep Blue Something, but NOOOOOO, they played that next, even though it was out of order (Breakfast At... should certainly preceed Breakfast In..., No?).  And so it goes...

Geoff, I've always meant to ask you this:  What if any of the punk genre do you actively enjoy?  I like Social D fairly well, but I lurves me some Clash & Ramones & X.  Just curious.  London Calling made the top 10 in RS's recent Greatest 500 Albums special edition.

And now here's a twin spin that makes it all worthwhile:  "Brian Wilson" by BNL into "Brick" by Ben Folds Five.  Not only the songs, but also the artist are B's!

If there was anything good about 9/11, it was that it interuppted this song's chart rise.

Sure you didn't punch up Oldies 103.7 by mistake? Per my post in the local radio thread, I'm somewhat baffled by their ratings surge. They actually beat Kiss-FM this month, and there's just no comparison to my ears, not just musically but in overall sound. Kiss kicks ass.

Missed it, but I was thrilled to see at 7:42 AM they played "Delta Rain" by the Blessing.  I've requested it many times on 10@10, to no avail.  I hope they also play "Highway 5".

Also nice to see Zero 7 "Destiny" at 8:06 AM.

I think it's just a function of where songs fall Alphabetically. One hour seems "modern", the next sounds '60s-centric.  This morning, I heard "Hey Joe" and "Hey Jude" back-to-back -- and luckily I missed the "Hey Mama"/"Hey Soul Sister"/"Hey There Delilah" trifecta. But there's been (overall) a surprising number of "old KFOG" songs in the mix and I still can't decide if it's an attempt to broaden the base again or if it's "the last farewell" before a drastic switch.  Like, maybe The Bone is gonna become KNBR-FM and therefore KFOG needs to play more "classics" again.

I think it's kind of evil!  They are playing wonderful music, true classics, and they exist alongside all this other drek 'in the library.'  So, by association, the new music is just as good as the old music.  You know, the old music is just nostalgia for old farts, Foster the People is supposed to represent future classics.

Didja see this from DC on the KFOG front page?

A message from Dennis for Fogheads:

One of the most difficult things in life is dealing with change. We get into our comfortable patterns. Challenging those patterns and finding new ways of doing things is scary, but it can be invigorating and even exciting.

After much consideration, I have made the very difficult decision that it’s time to introduce a brand new morning show on KFOG. It’s a show we’re calling KFOG In The Morning, and it will debut right after Memorial Day.

The Morning After will feature a fresh cast of characters that will immediately put you in a great mood, starting your day with information that’s relevant to you and, of course playing great music to give a positive start to your day. We hope that you will enjoy the new KFOG In The Morning with Tony, Greg and Melanie.

Unfortunately, this will mean that Webster and Irish Greg are leaving the station. We sincerely appreciate their years of service at KFOG and the sacrifices in they have made to get up early every morning to entertain Fogheads. They have been and will remain friends of everyone here.

Thank you for your support of KFOG and we sincerely hope you will find KFOG In The Morning with Tony, Greg and Melanie an enlightening and inspiring experience.

yes, Irish Greg and Webster got canned Friday 5/11 and this board (and the Facebook) have been very active with talk about what it means for KFOG.

Will they change formats?

Who are Melanie and Tony?  See here:

(we know Greg is Greg Gory, who has been on the morning show for a few weeks now, doing news.  He's the voice you now hear on KFOG in the morning slot).

Apparently "The Morning After" moniker has been sacked. They've now corrected the errant reference to TMA in DC's note on the KFOG front door, to read "KFOG In The Morning" so it sounds like they've gone back to a fairly nondescript uncreative tag for the No-Longer-The-Morning-Show.

I gotta laugh. It's kinda like they have a focus group going and updating their plans in real time. Either they don't know what they're doing, or they're brilliant. Either way, it probably won't benefit us. And they missed a chance to play some real rock today with "Running With the Devil". At least they played "Running Up That Hill".

ETA: I like "Santa Monica".

So is the "The Morning After" or ain't it? Anybody know who Tony and Melanie might be?

Apparently "The Morning After" moniker has been sacked. They've now corrected the errant reference to TMA in DC's note on the KFOG front door, to read "KFOG In The Morning" so it sounds like they've gone back to a fairly nondescript uncreative tag for the No-Longer-The-Morning-Show.

Looks like Maureen McGovern was wrong.

niiiiice...

Oddities in the "south" section: we got "Southbound Again" by DireStraits but not "Southbound" by the Allmans or "Southbound Suarez" by LedZep. But the Doobs "South City Midnight Lady" made the cut. And of course we got Moby's "Southside".  ::)

RabidDog Tim's updates aside, It's clear now that A-to-Z will end before Sunday.  They're promo-ing the GG Bridge thingy as an all-day thing (broadcasting live from the festival etc) climaxing with the simulcast of the fireworks "soundtrack" sometime after 9pm.  And AL has announced she's doing a special Memorial Day 10@10 on Monday featuring the recently departed (Duck Dunn, Robin Gibb, Donna Summer etc).

Holy cow, this FYC cover of "Suspicious Minds" is awful. Take the marbles out of your mouth, dude!

I *love* that version -- indeed, I like all their pre-"She Drives Me Crazy" stuff. Glad it made the cut in this endlessly baffling WTF A-to-Z.

Wow, well OK.

Interesting to include the Velvet's "Sweet Jane" rather than Lou Reed's (superior) solo version. Guess Lou's is too long.

So what do you know about Z songs? "Zoot Suit Riot"? "Zooropa" (is that a song even?)

ETA: Duh, Ziggy Stardust. And no Riot, but Zooropa is playing now...
