Dixie Cups Iko Iko led me asray to You Tube where I have been lost listening/watching Grateful Dead. Ripple and beautiful Althea but a loooonnngggg version, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQFeuAbLHro&feature=related
Sweet.

Seems like "Goldfinger" is getting the most requests, I'm happy to report.
And I'm gonna predict that we get an all-Macca set on Friday (they're still running commercials for tix still avail).

Did someone say Wayback? Yes, '65 is rich with choice: Motown, British Invasion, folk rock, etc. AL does a nice job with the '60s sets. BTW, saw a Beatles tribute band last night at the Ala County Fair, BeatleMajesty. Three of them were in the Broadway cast of Beatlemania. Pretty good in trying to look and sound like them. Instead of doing two duplicate shows as most fair acts do, they did the first show at 6pm as the Beatlemania years '63-66, the second show at 8pm was '67-70. http://www.beatlemajesty.com
Tonight its Grand Funk with originals Don Brewer on drums, Mel Schacher on bass, along with Max Carl (38 Special) on lead vocal/guitar, guitarist Bruce Kulick (12 years touring w/KISS) and Tim Cashion on keyboards (Bob Seger band). I saw this lineup there a couple years ago, a fun set.

Sounds like a great show tonight

Help! the Beatles are at Che Stadium!
-
"I do appreciate you being round": Just for kicks, I googled "fat Beatles fan" to see if I could make a funny - and the first image that came up was Mark David Chapman.
-
oo! BOS "Go Where You wanna Go", the Ms&Ps orig.
-
John, you gotta do not quite all of what you wanna do.
-
I think if I were any older than 4 months at the time, I would have liked 1965 a lot.
-
The Vejtables from the Bay Area!
-
The Vejitables from the East Bay!
NTM and I'm digging it muchly. BOS2.

still scary, still (sadly) relevant
-
BOS "Eve of Destruction." I'm trying to think of the latest overtly political song to chart Top 10, and unless you count M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" (which I don't), I'm drawing a blank.
-
First and only Hot 100 hit to use the word coagulatin'. "I'm just sittin' here" ... tryin' not to make the obvious joke.

LAWD! BOS6 Mr Zimmerman.

LAWD! BOS6 Mr Zimmerman.
Yayayay! Much better than the listless, serious cover by Dave Alvin. Have ya heard it? It's actually kinda cool sounding, but I think the wrong tone for the song.
-
I remember that I had heard "Eve of Destruction" quite a few times before I realized that it wasn't Dylan. And even then I assumed it had to be from '67 or '68. It really startled me to learn that people were thinking/feeling/writing songs this way already in '65.
-
Hellooooo Bob! Sounding good

does Prince's "Sign o' the Times" count as political?

Roger Miller!

Another BOS for me. But I would like for AL to play the Johnny Winter cover form (I think) '71 sometime.
-
Uber BOS "King of the Road".
-
wooooo King O the road. Nice
-
BOS for Bangor, Maine!
-
wow -- AL gives us "King of the Road" again. I was gonna request it but figured she'd wanna give it more of a rest. BOS7
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FhCJvYwH1Os/ShHs7w-qzBI/AAAAAAAAB3s/d7qKVBP_WqQ/s400/Foreign+Picture+Sleeve.JPG)
but next time: "England Swings".

Absolutely, but I'm hoping there are examples more recent. :) I do think Pink's "Dear Mr. President" could have done it if her label had had the balls to release it as a single here (it was a massive hit overseas).

I like candy wrapped in a sweater. It's high in fibers.
-
woo hoo! Strangeloves wantin' some candy. VHM.

Uber BOS "I Want Candy" and the Bo Diddley beat.
-
It's the bari sax that really makes "I Want Candy" for me. And of course those backbeat drums, which I once read were called "Masai drums" in an effort to make them seem exotic.
-
heheheheh, mah man! BOS8 "Treat Her Right" -- AL gives good Head.
-
Haha, see Wayback's illo of those "Masai drums."
-
If Roy treats her right, she'll give Roy Head.
-
Roy Head "Treat Her Right" on TV's "Shindig" 1965:

'Nother BOS, 'Treat Her Right'
-
Over way too early.
-
If Roy treats her right, she'll give Roy Head.
Head JINX!
-
That was an awesome set - and just as I tried to save - it - browser crash!
Did any one get an mp3?

You're not counting "War"?
Too many choices for BOS, but I'll defer to "I Want Candy".

I didn't mean to imply that "Eve of Destruction" was the last. I just can't think of any from the '00s offhand.
-
BOS: Go Where You Wanna Go. The Mamas and the Papas had such great songs, even though Papa John turned out to be a whack-job.

Okie… yeah, I think the 2000’s were pretty dark in that category, for some obvious reasons. Now you got me thinking as to what the last large politica-hit would be.

Ok

AL notes on FB that several songs that she wanted to play today were missing ("plundered from the KFOG library") so she had to improvise a bit.

More from The Vejtables, from the Bay Area, their drummer was female, rare for the time.
"Mansion of Tears"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeOGiw3LtGE
"I Stole the Goodyear Blimp"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXoxlPVBOOk
Another tune, "Feel the Music" is a more bluesy, garage-band sound:

You’ve got me thinking about this…. Although it may be sacrilegious to think of Fergie singing about anything important, wouldn’t the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is The Love” at least loosely be considered political?

Oh, and that one song of theirs: Lady humps = boobs = Bush and Cheney. Very political.

great song, but it didn't get anywhere near the Top Ten, which is what Gaz was asking.

I'll give you that one; I'd forgotten it, but yeah, there are some provocative lines in there. (And it was before Fergie joined, I'm happy to report.) Good call.

Jan, the drummer/singer, eventually joined the Mojo Men, who had a local hit of "Sit Down I Think I Love You." Was this heard anywhere else?

Were any of the songs off American Idiot popular enough to be considered hits?
