Title: The Facebook Thread
Post by: RGMike on March 06, 2009, 07:49:37 AM
Well, since we're all (or most of us) Facebooking now, we might as well have a thread about it.

Did anyone else get an invitation from Geoff to join a 10@10 Facebook group? I accidentally deleted it, but there's no mention on his page of having created such a group, unless I'm missing something.

I just sent you an invitation.  Hadn't been to the group in a while, and just noticed a lot of unfamiliar names there - cool!

Thanks -- I'm still learning the ins-n-outs of FB; like the diff between my Home page and my Profile page.  ;)

looking forward to new home page where I can tailor more.  One of my "friends" is a musician, and takes up most of my home page with all of his new friend announcements.  I understand what he's doing, but I don't need to know about every one of his 3,000 friends!  Although, some of them are also my friends, and it's been useful.  Hmmm...

I must be the only one who is not on Facebook, My Space or even Twitter. And I have no plans to go on those sites.

We the public need to remind ourselves that this is a fricking free service and Facebook needn't get our permission to do what they want with their layouts.

Having said that, Facebook risks squandering some well-earned but potentially fickle customer capital when it doesn't give the customer something very simple in response (that being, the option not to switch to an updated layout).

I use few apps and know how to find who I want there, so while I don't care for the revision, I'm not wound up about it.

It's amazing no one thought of it before. So they send those to people who aren't on Facebook too, I presume?

I haven't gotten one yet, but I do get those ridiculous (and ubiquitous) "we want to award you a PhD" emails.  And of course SPAM about "my account" at a bank I don't actually have an account at.

I don't normally pay much attention to those whiners about how Facebook does this and that, but I just gotta say that I find it very difficult to get where I want to go in the new interface.  Groups are very hidden.

Seems to be pretty much agreed that their new interface is not terribly intuitive, and the "feed" on your home page is pulling in way more unnecessary crap than it used to. There's a voting page on FB for whether people like it or not, and last I looked, the "against" vote was ahead, by a ratio of something like 15 to 1.

One of my Facebook "friends" is a woman named Rita Houston; I worked with her at ABC in the '80s and she has been Music Director at WFUV for a dozen years.  So I'm looking at a posting of hers on my feed and one of *her* friends who commented on her post is... Haley Jones, former KFOG Music Director who's now at The Sound in LA!

Would it be bad FB etiquette to send her a message asking for a streaming link that works?

Not if yo're polite/diplomatic about it.  And while you're at it, ask her to set up the sets to repeat in the evenings!

As I've explained a number of times, I can't use their "new" player option because it involves downloading Silverlight and we're not allowed to download software at work. And I can't use their "old" (non-Silverlight) player link because players powered by Liquid Compass flat-out DO NOT WORK on my work computer for reasons I cannot explain. I am alone in this.

I've emailed the station (twice) asking for an "old-school" WMP streaming link but they have never replied.

I'm on a Mac, and when I click "here to use basic player", it says my browser can't play it, and would I like Windows Media Player to do the job, and, yes, I sure do. Haven't had any problems in awhile. And I certainly wouldn't like to download some new player just to listen to reruns every now and then. :)

Perhaps Kaiser has blocked Facebook access from your network. I've heard of other businesses doing it, theorizing that it's costing them lost work hours while their employees figure out what their 25 random things are.

hard to say.  I wasn't home during the day, and Facebook is blocked at our school.  We were getting intermittent power losses at home yesterday afternoon due to the high winds; perhaps some servers related to Kaiser and/or Facebook were fritzing when you tried to access.

A friend posted this story on FB: he woke up this morning to find his ceiling was leaking; no one in the condo upstairs was answering the door. They eventually got into the upstairs apt; turns out the guy defaulted on his mortgae and split, and he STOLE EVERYTHING that came with the place -- appliances, even plumbing fixtures (so, literally, everything including the kitchen sink!). One of the exposed pipes sprang a leak and eventually started coming thru my friend's ceiling.  And to top it off the former upstairs neighbor was a gun nut -- the floors were covered with ammo casings!

A friend of mine who does taxes for a living has heard a lot of unhappy stories over the last couple years.  Last year it was people losing their houses, this year people losing their jobs (and more houses).  People feel helpless and wronged.  This, in some cases, turns to rage, and some people decide to destroy what they can't keep.  Jeff tries to disuade people from this course, but doesn't always succeed.  People aren't necessarily evil, just stupid and emotional.  The essential goodness of man goes out the window when you take everything away from him (or he percieves that you have).

I'm not excusing peoples' bad behavior, but I understand where it's coming from.  When you sell people a dream and then the dream world crashes around them, there are going to be consequences.  What really surprises me is the relative calm that has surrounded this collapse.  You'd think people would be taking to the streets, storming CEO mansions, etc...

I wonder if part of that is because the collapse happened during a GOP administration; it seems to me that's taken a lot of the wind out of the sort of right-wing populist anger that we would've seen had it happened at the tail end of, say Al Gore's 2nd term. Can you imagine what Fox News etc would've been whipping up had that been the case? The best they can do, with a confident/competent Dem in the White House, is that silly teabag thing.

I haven't been able to log in since yesterday--just keep getting some "site maintenance" error message, and I haven't gotten a single notification e-mail either, which is very odd for an entire day. Jon Carroll sums up FB perfectly:

Quote
I have to talk about Facebook. I bet you have an opinion about Facebook, even if you've never been on it. People on Facebook have opinions about Facebook, and often start petitions asking Facebook to stop doing something or start doing something or, basically, leave them the hell alone.

(Please don't friend me on Facebook, unless we have already shared a meal or fluids. I already have 579 friends on Facebook, most of whom are not my friends. They are friends of friends, which is fine, and I don't really have to do anything to maintain this "friendship" and can in fact cancel it, but I think 579 friends is enough for any person, particularly for a guy who doesn't even like big parties very much.)

Some people think that having all these people somehow invading your space is creepy. But my Facebook space is not my actual space; it's this little fake world I've created using a few harmless facts about myself. I am not looking for a mate or a cause; I'm not looking for gossip. Besides, why would I care about gossip about people I don't know?

OTOH, most of my family is on Facebook, and real friends in other parts of the country and world, and it's sort of like getting postcards from them from time to time. Plus: videos of cats playing the piano. There's now Twitter-Facebook crossbreeding going on, but I don't Twitter because, well, I don't know. The people who love it love it. Maybe it's great. I'm already at my computer too much.

Ah, but the thing about Facebook is the applications. Everyone out there in the universe is writing applications for Facebook. There must be money in it. There are quizzes; oh my yes. What "Star Wars" character are you? What state should you really be living in? What candy bar are you most like? And on and on.

Also - maybe I should not tell you this - but there's something called the Lil Green Patch (the lack of apostrophe does not make me happy), which allegedly helps the rain forest as you send imaginary plants back and forth, and another one that helps the oceans, and dear heavens I don't know what all. Oh, and you can poke people and send them eggs and throw things at them, all in a virtual way.

Time on my hands? Sure, but not that much.

Title: Dirty Laundry on FB
Post by: ggould on October 11, 2009, 11:07:12 PM
On my news feed, I noticed a 'friend' who was complaining about how his ex-wife deleted his kids as his FB friends, then noticed his ex started posting complaints, he responded, others chimed in...

26 comments later

This does not seem like a good way to work out your problems.

For those not fond of the latest Facebook changes (which would seem to be, um, everybody): Go to the menu on the left, click "more", then  drag "Status updates" to the top of the list. Once "Status Updates" is at the top, click on it. It becomes your default and now things are like they were before.

So FB gave me a friend suggestion for someone named "Brick Collecting" -- no, it's not a "join this group" or "become a fan" suggestion, this "Brick Collecting" is presented as a person. No photo, of course, and we have no mutual friends.

er... WTF??

You may also be aware of the spam scam involving emails from FB and MySpace asking you to "update your account settings by clicking below". Phony, needless to say.

yes, beware of scams for sure, but someone in my network did create a FB profile for "David Wooderson,"
the character Matthew McConaughey plays in Dazed and Confused.

And of course I friended him, cause he's cool as hell, man!  And remember his wise words:

Question for urth, geoff and Alicat: have you been Facebook-friend-requested by "Scott Fisher"?  He's a FB-friend of KFOG's page -- he tried to friend me (I guess because I've posted comments there during 10@10) and I ignored him because I no longer "friend" people I don't already know and like.  But he has a fairly creepy profile picture right now and he seems to be one of those less-than-knowlegable Fogheads (he thought "Mighty Quinn" was sung by Donovan this morning). Jus' sayin'. Beware.

I haven't, but I noticed he seemed to respond pretty regularly and (repeatedly) to anything KFOG posts on their fan page, and he seems to be one of those who thinks anything on KFOG is the BEST THING EVER. So he was already on my radar. But glad to know I'm not being paranoid about getting "creep" vibes from him.

ETA: And that was before I saw the profile pic you're referring to. Ick.

Facebook Follies:

1) our work PCs now have a buffer that shows us a warning page when we try to go to FB: "social networking sites sometime have viruses, are you sure you want to go there, yadda yadda".

2) FB itself made me go thru a security thingy ("type these words in the box") before I could post a comment in a thread I myself started!   But the box wouldn't let me put my cursor there so I couldn't type the damn words. WTF??

nope -- it was clearly their glitch. seems to have resolved itself in the last half-hour. But seriously: a security check to comment in your own thread?

AH! you've explained it then -- my post indeed included a link (to your blog, as it happens*). But I've posted links in comments before and never got a security check.

I just tried to post a comment on someone else's FB page and got a "you must confirm your account" pop-up asking for my "mobile phone" or "credit card" number -- WTFF?

addendum: I had tried to post a comment on a thread on AL's page that was started by that Scott Fisher dude  (he wanted to know when Live at the Archives would be repeated -- jeezus, the guy listens to KFOG 24/7 and he doesn't know they repeat it Sun nite? They've only been doing that for over a decade!).  Anyway I tried to post an answer and got the above-described pop-up, clearly looked like a Facebook dialog box.  But I was able to post a comment in an AL-originated thread with no problem. Again: WTFF?

I live in CCC most of my life, and I can't come up with anything.  There are some golf courses I could recommend, I suppose, but none of them are bucket list worthy (say, like Pebble Beach or The Old Course in Scotland would be).  Um, Mt. Diablo is nice....  Go look at it.  Done.

TANC/it's-a-small-world:  This morning on the Drive's 10@10, Bob did '67 and mentioned the big Chicago blizzard of Jan '67, as the city gets hit by a big storm today.  Later, a FB-friend of mine, a guy I used to work with at ABC and who's from Chicago, posted some radio clips of that blizzard. so I commented

Quote
Was just listening to The Drive in Chicago this morning; they do a fine version of "10@10" and were featuring 1967. The jock (Bob Stroud) mentioned that blizzard -- it happened 2 days after a record January heat wave

And my friend said "I know Bob well - we worked together at WMET. He wasn't in Chicago in 1967, though!"

and a few minutes later, who should comment in the same thread but Bob Stroud!

I had to (finally) "un-friend" someone on FB because, well, she's kinda nuts. I've had weird dust-ups with her for the past 2 years, and was on the verge of un-friending her in December. And you may remember I posted a few months ago about how a FB-friend of hers (a guy she didn't actually know) had nastily attacked me when I criticized Donald Trump. And she instantly dumped him and that made me think well... maybe she's not so bad.

But: she is, among other things, a high priestess of the Cult of Oprah. Yesterday she posted this quote from Steadman Graham, Oprah's beard, oops, I mean "boyfriend":

"You are not your circumstances... You are your possibilities". Very Hallmark, no? I couldn't resist commenting "Easy for him to say..."

And of course she was highly offended. Why, Streadman has a master's degree! and he has his own company! and on and on. I said, "yeah, and his girlfriend is the richest woman on Earth. So his 'possibilities' are endless, don'cha think?"

And then her friends chimed in, defending S & O both. I pointed out that you don't get to be a billionaire by being nice but of course O is the exception, she's the only nice billionaire!  Sheesh.

Then the piece de resistance -- my (now ex-)friend said, "y'know, Gayle King is a Facebook friend of mine -- I hope she doesn't see what you said in this thread!!"

And go fuck yourself, lady. Jeezus H Christ.

Beware: a friend had her FB account hacked yesterday. And I was an innocent bystander.  I had just logged on yesterday afternoon when the "chat" box opened and it said it was my friend Barbara from NJ.  "Hi there" she said, and I said "Hi Babs!"

Babs: "so what are you doing?"
Me: (a tad suspicious since Babs never uses FB Chat) "laughing at something [a mutual FB-friend of ours] just posted"
Babs: "I am not so good"
Me: (even more wary) "Oh...? What's wrong?"
Babs: "I'm stranded in the Phillippines with my family -- we were mugged at gunpoint. It was scary"

OK now I *KNOW* it's not Babs. Clearly someone is about to try and scam me for money. I reply that I suspect it's not Babs but if it is she should call me, otherwise I'll know it's BS.  No reply.   I immediately call Babs and leave a message on her cel; she calls back ("No I'm not in the Phillippines") and logs on to FB to find a Security Breach Protocol screen -- she has to answer a bunch of questions and ID pictures of friends to get back in. Sheesh.

FB pet peeves:

http://blog.sfgate.com/hottopics/2011/10/13/national-pet-peeve-week-facebook-friends/

A handful of thoughts:

1)   FB really ought to not allow one to like their own status.
2)   When I don’t have a lot to discuss, I’ll occasionally throw out a song lyric, but I try to keep it as both irrelevant and irreverent as possible.
3)   I automatically block any game requests.
4)   There are definitely a few friends who seem to have but one thing going on in their lives (one in particular is apparently in perpetual transit between the Bay Area, Tahoe and Maui with her husband and three daughters, and of course, everything is wonderful). Yes it is annoying, but nobody is pointing a gun to my head making me keep her as a friend.
5)   Those who want to know what I look like can click on my ‘photos’ section – and I do find it amusing what others choose to pinch-hit as their profile picture.

Somebody named Lex Truthor had the best ones:

How to suck on Facebook:

1. Repost inane "repost this" status updates.
2. Post political rants.
3. Use your children's pictures as your profile pic. Guess what? You care more about your kids than anyone else on your list.
4. Tag photos. Especially the embarrassing ones.
5. Reply to friends of your friends telling them how much they suck for not sharing your viewpoint.
6. Create awkward moments by sending friend requests to your exes.
7. "Like" every band, book, article, you come across so everyone on your list gets spammed with junk only you care about.
8. Post every single personal revelation in your life. "I can't live for everyone else anymore. I need to live for myself." Save it for your therapist.
9. Complain about your job. Everyone loves a complainer.
10. Repeatedly invite all your friends to play Xanga games. People love that the only time they hear from you is when you want a referral prize from Farmville.

Little Steven's Underground Garage posts show up in my newsfeed; over the weekend he posted the YT clip of Bruce's "We take Care of Our Own". some IDIOT commented

"springsteen is tree huging lib. i wouldnt go to one of his concerts if it was free."

for which he was roundly thrashed. But what is someone that right-wing (and Bruce-hating) doing listening to/"liking" Steven to begin with?  (Note the misspelling of "huging", which could be a typo but if you go to the guy's FB page he says he works for "CBS Transpertation".)

I was facebooking (new word?) on my phone today and while on AL's page or in a post between her and Greg Gory, I accidently touched the screen and it sent a friend request to Greg Gory He accepted. I do not need to be friends with him. Should I leave it as is or unfriend him? I don't even listen to KFOG in the morning. It was truly accidental.

You could always filter his posts so that he won't lose you as a friend, but you won't be infiltrated with his material. Or you could just unfriend him, he is an adult.

My wife 'accidentally' added her aunt as a friend for me. I don't have much use for the aunt's posts, but it would seem a tad indecent to just drop her. Fortunately, she doesn't post too often.

Just unfriend him. If you don't know him, he very likely doesn't know you. Facebook does not send a message telling people they've been unfriended. So he'd have to remember your name and figure out that you were no longer among his friends. Probably not going to happen, particularly if he like a lot of media personalities has something like 3500 friends. So harbor no guilt, and unfriend away.

That's the American way! I'll have to check my address to see if it's changed.

About a year or so ago I swear half my FB friends were posting things about 2011 being a 'snake eyes year', which only occurs every 864 years or something. Had to do with calendar alignment. Had to point out that 2011 and 2005 have exactly the same layout.

I've been inundated this week with FB posts from friends liking/sharing boomer-nostalgia pics of the "if you know what this is, then LIKE" variety. Pictures of Fess Parker,  old salt & pepper shakers and on and on.  Most hilarious was a picture of Shari Lewis' puppet LambChop

but the caption said "Do you know who this guy is?"

er... GUY?? Pretty sure LambChop was a girl, kids.

oh, and these posts tend to be from radio stations or local websites that are NOT local to where the FB-friends in question actually live. So forgive me for suspecting spam.

The one I've been seeing a lot over the last month is not a picture but a paragraph of text extolling all the great things about having been "a child of the 50's, 60's, 70s, or 80s" and asking that you "like" it if you were born in that period. Jeezus, people, that's a spread of 40 years. What percentage of the US population do you think was born in one of those decades? That's everyone between 22 and 62 years of age, and includes a whole lot of baby boomers. That doesn't exactly make you unique.

A lot of what I see on FB these days only serves to persuade me just how stupid a whole lot of our citizenry are.

Stoopidity reigns supreme.

I chased one of these down yesterday, asking one to like if they recognized an old washing machine.  It turned out my friend actually did click it.  That doesn't mean it's still not some insidious data-mining droid, but I wanted to pass along this one instance.

yeah, when I realized how many "likes" each of those posts had, and the whole 6-degrees-of-separation factor on FB, I realized it was quite possible that a friend in Jersey had seen a pic that originated in Seatle, or wherever. Still refusing to click on them myself, tho'.

Will somebody kindly tell JF to try to stop adding my birthday to his calendar. I swear he's tried this seven times.

I had to think for a few mins who JF is -- he spends so little time on the 'snipes page.

Well, I guess if I stumped you (if for a few mins), then I'm doing an adequate job of "identity concealment".

I just noticed that he's trying to do the same to me. I've just ignored it in the past.

I wonder if he has a virus. He can't be that dedicated to getting us on his 'calendar'. Can't he? Plus he's managed to wish me a happy birthday the 'traditional' way.

I get requests all the time from people that I am pretty sure are not actually making requests (at least not on purpose).  I haven't traced it too far, but the birthday thing, Bubble Safari requests and that sort of thing get ignored every time.

Also, I've seen a few friends 'like' Mitt Romney, and was surprised in each case.  Then one of them made a special post assuring us that he HAD NOT liked Mitt, that he must have been hacked.  Which made a lot more sense.

wow, we haven't posted in this thread in 3 years!

Just wanted to say that FB appears to be down at the moment, at least for me.

Probably an overload of people posting comic book pictures, or posting waivers of Terms Of Service, or something similarly asinine.

Was down here, too, but it came back up a couple hours ago. (At least that's when I noticed.)

So I've been locked out of FB since Noon yesterday. Get a screen that says

"Your Account is Temporarily Locked. Wer've locked your account because someone recently tried to log in from an unfamiliar location. Please help us confirm that it was you who tried to log in"

It wasn't me; I was on FB at the time from  my usual location (home PC) and I only ever log on from there, my work PC or my phone. Problem is, that warning screen has a "continue" button that's supposed to take me to the next step  but the page is constantly loading and re-loading and the button doesn't work. They also sent me an email with this info and the link in the email leads me to the same unhelpful page.

Some Googling tells me LOTS of people have had this problem at one time or another, and it (eventually) resolves itself but meantime I'm stuck.
