You know I love my Rush, but, umm, that's not an environmetnal song.  It's a political allegory about the US pushing Canada around.  And what Canadians would do to the US if they had the wherewithal to turn the tables.

(just for the record)

Well.... dang! You do love your Rush. I never bothered to look beyond the surface of that song.

I just remember back in 10th grade in English class we had to write a poem or short story for a "Collected Works" book thing my teacher wanted us make. Some kid just wrote out the lyrics to "The Trees" and submitted it with a drawing he did of a tree. The teacher never caught it and we all had a good laugh (I think the same kid also submitted "Locomotive Breath" as a poem and didn't get busted for that, either. Good times).

Damn Canadians. They're just lucky they're women are hot & their beer is tasty or else we'd bomb them back to the Stone Age!  :D

Well, a tasty woman wouldn't be so bad (in a non-cannabalistic sense, of course).

Hot beer, though? Ew.

See, the TV show Smallville is filmed in Canada and many of the guest-star actresses are Canadian and they're all hot.

Also, the woman who owns my neighborhood bar is Canadian and, like, nuclear hot.

They'd cut us down to size (literally, see the bolded part).

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunligh
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(and they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream `oppression!`
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
"the oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light"
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw ...

methinks there are worse things than being referred to metaphorically as an Oak (just ask Ah-nuld! LOL!).

Those "I Am a Canadian" Molson commercials a few years back made the same point far more pointedly (and with humor).

I believe this is the largest number of posts we've had prior to the beginning of the set in ages. I'm hoping for Mother Nature's Son, myself.

The Earth Day sets always seem to be pretty good, cuz all the songs are at least 20 years old--they just don't write songs about saving the forests and gettin' back to the country and such any more.

Pedantic note: the Counting Crows' cover was aided and abetted by Vanessa Carlton, who provided "double damage" on the ooh-bop-bop-bops.

Pre-emptive BOS will go to 3DN's "Out in the Country," though while thinking about the song this afternoon I realized how painfully redundant the opening couplet is:

"Whenever I need to leave it all behind
Or feel the need to get away ..."

Yikes.

Speaking of Godzilla & Earth Day- there is the environmentally-aware Godzilla epic, Godzilla vs Hedora (the Smog Monster from the 70s. It features a bitchin' tune called "Save the Earth". Very cool.

The best part is when the teens hold a rock&roll rally to raise awareness about pollution & light, like, 100 bonfires....

I should change forums for this, but I'm too lazy: TRACKS magazine, which I held out a lot of hope for, has gone on hiatus, in search of more funding.  A sad ending to one of the few music mags that wasn't celebrity-driven.  It must have been that ugly cover of the toothsome but talented Lucinda Williams that did them in.

Gaz, have you checked out Paste mag? Sort of a hybrid of Magnet and No Depression. Indie, with a strong folk/alt country bent. It's a bimonthy, comes with a sampler CD and DVD if you subscribe.

VVHM "Last Resort". one of Mr Henley's shining moments, IMHO, and he's been dissed here a few times this week.

"Call someplace Paradise -- kiss it goodbye."

More relevant than ever, methinks.

Yeah, as was mentioned before (by Gaz I think)- Dave's rounded up some cool new stuff for Earth Day.

Now, all he has to do is finish up with "Godzilla" and it'll be perfect.

I heard about it for the first time in a separate discussion about TRACKS's demise.  Will check it out next time I'm at a bookstore.  Although I've heard that they tend to put a Christian spin on things, which makes me worry about how they assess us "deviants."

Agreed, that sounded very nice.  I wasn't paying attention to the lyrics, though.  It sounded like it could have been bookended by "Roy Rogers" and "Harmony" on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

The line that got me was "someone laid the hillsides low, while the town got high."

An indictment of the California lifestyle of the 70s (and today) if ever there was one.

Or maybe Dave's slipping in an extra song cuz it's Friday.

For shame!

She came from Providence, the one in Rhode Island
where the old world shadows hang heavy in the air.
She packed her hopes and dreams like a refugee,
just as her father came across the sea.

She heard about a place people were smilin',
they spoke about the red man's way, how they loved the land.
And they came from everywhere to the Great Divide
seeking a place to stand or a place to hide.

Down in the crowded bars out for a good time,
can't wait to tell you all what it's like up there.
And they called it paradise, I don't know why.
Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high.

Then the chilly winds blew down across the desert,
through the canyons of the coast to the Malibu
where the pretty people play hungry for power
to light their neon way and give them things to do.

Some rich man came and raped the land, nobody caught 'em,
put up a bunch of ugly boxes and, Jesus, people bought 'em.
And they called it paradise, the place to be,
they watched the hazy sun sinking in the sea.

You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did so many years ago.
They even brought a neon sign 'Jesus is Coming',
brought the white man's burden down, brought the white man's reign.

Who will provide the grand design, what is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier, we have got to make it here.
We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds
in the name of destiny and in the name of God.

And you can see them there on Sunday morning
stand up and sing about what it's like up there.
They called it paradise, I don't know why.
You call some place paradise - kiss it goodbye.

I haven't blogged since school started.  I'm kinda drained most of the time.  I plan on banging a Native American frame drum, and chanting lyrics from some of my favorite tunes.  The very end of "Deluge" sounds like a good ending to me.

Now that they have the Big Rick tie-in, Dave can't do the de facto 10 way ties anymore (as he used to sometimes do with listener generated sets).
