Title: Wednesday March 16--It's 1975!
Post by: urth on March 16, 2005, 10:00:49 AM
Never heard Dave tip the year in the pre-spin spiel before!

And he said before the commercials that it would include the best TV show theme song of the decade. Bob Newhart (the big band version)? That'd get my vote.

I'd lay money on ELO, if not Fire on High then something else from Face the Music (Poker has been a recent Dave-fave).

My vote would be for "Nanny & the Professor" (thank you, Addrisi Bros.) but I'm sure that's not where Dave was going.  I'd expect either Maude or Barney Miller.  No, wait -- Baretta.

I'd lay money on the Rockford Files, which first aired in the 74-75 season.  Baretta was in '75, so maybe.

Agreed. The last great ELO record--the ones that followed seemed to have lost something, and when he canned his string section, well, it was all over.

There was a reconstituted ELO touring on the Konocti oldies circuit a couple years back--anyone know who was in it or if they were any good?

An ELO tour would seem to me a case of utterly missing the point.  They were/are the quintessential headphones band this side of Tears For Fears.

BOS2 to Bowie's Young Americans. This record and Station to Station are by far my two faves of his, and that's saying a lot.

Still waiting for this set's Gomer though--although perhaps the Marley song was it. Just didn't quite feel like one.

Dave's all-time TV theme is "One Day at a Time"?!  That's like finding out he traded in his motorcycle for a Trabaut.

Meanwhile, hoping he atones for the Sugarloaf rehash by closing with Lennon's "#9 Dream."  John 3/16, as it were.

Btw, where'd Dave get that "TV party tonight" bumper he's been using before his TV themes lately?

Hah!  I was singing "Why Can't We Be Friends" to myself this morning while I was making coffee.  Wanna hear why?  It's silly.  Inexplicably, I was humming "Funky Nassau" on the way into work and my cow orker heard thought I said I was funky.  I told him Nassau was funky.  He said I was funky.  Funky funky funky funky funky.  That lead me to the jamming track on "Why Can't We Be Friends" in which the phrase "Funky funky funky funky funky funky funky..." appears.  That song stinks, so I resorted to "WCWBF".  So there you go.

One thing that goes underappreciated about the '70s JS albums is how improved their group vocals were over the unison singing approach of the JA records.  I can only assume producer Larry Cox taught Paul Kantner how to best use his voice.  The backing arrangements of this, "St. Charles," "Caroline," and "Count on Me" are nothing short of breathtaking.

I wish Victor were listening.

Alicat called me on my cell to ask me to proxy "Miracles" for her, but I had to jet over to a customer at 10:30 & just now got back.  She was not in an interview, but rather squiring 2nd-graders on a field trip.

I heard the back announce & I am pretty sure I was the gentleman in question who debated the TV theme choice with him.  I said it wasn't even the best theme of the shows debuting in 1975, behind Barney Miller & Baretta.  So does this mean I have an open invite to go drink champagne at Dave's house?  He won't get laid tho.

So does this mean I have an open invite to go drink champagne at Dave's house? He won't get laid tho.

Dude, isn't this like the second time Dave's hit on you? No, seriously! I vaguely remember us teasing you about this in the past...

I love that we all had *identical* reactions to all that.

Could that have been the first (and likely the only) 6-way jinx in board history?

Any sign of Alicat?  Think she's in a Round 2 interview?

BOS to War.  Very fond associations with this song, I don't know how one can NOT smile after hearing that refrain over and over.

No 2nd interview--not yet anyway. I went to a Celtic music show this morning and got to work at 1pm. Big meeting and announcements of upcming departures, mine and others. New manager sitting within 4 feet of me so viewing this and posting may be awkward but I'll try.
I called in my BOS for Miracles while on the road.

too lazy to log in. Just read the posts. I was listening to the backannounce but had three 7-year old boys in the car and was probably screaming at them to shut up and didn't hear Dave. Damn.

Mark, I say GO FOR IT. He has a nice little house. You could watch laserdiscs. Mike and I both reclined on his bed, it's comfortable. OK, I'm killing myself now. Family wonders why I'm chuckling as I type.

Say, wasn't Dave doing the champagne thing with Charles, the manners guy, at the Cliff House last Friday!?

Yikes. If Dave is hooking up with Charles "Social Grace":

then he's more desperate than we thought
