1. Golden Earring, "Twilight Zone"
2. David Bowie, "Ashes to Ashes"
3. Pat Benatar, "Love Is a Battlefield"

1. Golden Earring, "Twilight Zone" -> "Destination Unknown"
2. David Bowie, "Ashes to Ashes" -> "Major Tom"
3. Pat Benatar, "Love Is a Battlefield" -> "?"

I'd never made the "Twilight Zone" - "Destination Unknown" connection, but that's a great observation. Unfortunately, it's not what I was looking for. :)

is it something specific to the lyrics or not?

Not the lyrics per se, but the approach to singing them.

And none of them have been in Cliff Clavin's kitchen, either. But your answer, while true, is not what I was going for. Something a little more uncommon. :)

Would it help if I said ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You" would fit as well?
-
The answer was:
Songs where a section is sung with a spoken echo.
"It's 2am (It's 2am)"
"I've never done good things (I've never done good things) ..."
"We are young (we are young) / Heartache to heartache (Heartache to heartache) ..."

That's a good one, Joe. I never had a chance to dig up the songs & listen to them all.

OK, here's a new one, since I'm insomniacal tonight:
1. Earth, Wind & Fire, "Shining Star"
2. Jefferson Airplane, "Crown of Creation"
3. Ray, Goodman & Brown, "Special Lady"
But let's make it more fun: If you know it, rather than posting the answer, post another song that would fit the set.

I'm guessing songs with brief a cappella segments; I'm too lazy to think of three more.

Close enough; I was going for "Songs That End With A Capella Segments."
-
OK, I can't remember if I've used this one on y'all before:
1. Billy Joel, "Keeping the Faith"
2. Rod Stewart, "Love Touch"
3. El DeBarge, "Who's Johnny?"
Again, if you know it, come up with a fourth song that fits the bill.

No takers? How about this one:
1. Stevie Wonder, "I Just Called to Say I Love You"
2. Elton John, "Levon"
3. Billy Joel, "She's Right On Time"
-
In each of the above 2 threesomes I am unfamiliar with the 3rd song. In times past I would have limewired it & tried to figure it out, but I won't be that bored until next week sometime. If you leave it until then I promise to give it a shot. I will also have a few of my own after I get my annual reporting done today & survive the weekend.
:)

Yes. More specifically, non-Christmas songs that mention Christmas.
You really should track down the video for "She's Right On Time," a cut from the underrated Nylon Curtain album. Genius. The song's about a guy getting his shit together preparing for his girl's Christmastime arrival, and the video takes it smartly literally (between this and "Allentown," BJ was on a roll, video-wise).

Agreed on all counts -- NC was, at the time, his best since The Stranger and served to win back alot of folks (like me, not to mention many rock crits) who thought Glass Houses was crap. (I'd completely forgotten that song was from NC!) And then he followed it with Innocent Man, also brilliant in a very different way and easily the best of the big-star-pays-homage-to-his-roots albums that came in its wake.

I know a M3S where Petula Clark can go!
cellarful -- "I Know a Place"
wherefore -- "Don't Sleep in the Subway"
bossa nova -- "Downtown"
"cellarful" always reminds me of the Rutles, which parodied Brian Epstein's book "Cellarful of Noise" as "Cellarful of Goys"

If you'd have put in Killer Queen instead of Sideshow I might have stood a chance.
But that's a good one for sure.
