Title: The Shraytabase quiz
Post by: mshray on August 01, 2007, 01:12:05 PM
Recently I have undertaken not only to update my Db (which is now continuous for 3.25 yrs and covers about 50% of all sets for the preceeding 3 years, about 1200 sets total), but also to really once & for all clean up the various misspellings, mis-capitalizations & mis-abbreviations that screw up the sorting.

In so doing I keep coming across anomalies that (I hope) make for good trivia questions.  So, the first such question is:

This classic song, by a HOF artist, is a really big Katrina in not-one-but-two different repeated theme sets, yet it has not appeared in a year-specific set in my Db.

Hint: it has been covered by many, including at least* two other HOF artists

*two such versions appear in the Db.

I'm going to guess CCR/Nina Simone, "I Put a Spell on You."

nope that's not it.  Further hint, one of the aforementioned HOF acts that covered the song is a very recent inductee.

The answer is:  Martha & The Vandellas "Dancing In The Street", which has appeared in at least 4 Motown sets and at least 4 Summer sets.  Versions by Jagger & Bowie and 2007 inductees Van Halen also appear in the Db.

My first reaction was "Bitch."  But my real answer, given Dave's profound unimaginativeness in '89 sets, is "Mixed Emotions."

Since we're guaranteed a classic set today, maybe another one of these will help pass the time.

When sorted alphabetically by artist and then song title, there is only one instance (out of over 12,000 entries) where 2 artists have appeared consecutively with versions of the same song*.  Name the one song & two artists.

*This means that the first artist has no songs after the one in question, and the second artist has none in front.  Which is a roundabout way of pointing out that they are either obscure only-in-the-Bay-Area bands or OHW's.

finally getting some free time to try to polish off the edit of the Db, noticed another quizzable fact.

This band has by far the most songs in the Db that contain numbers in the titles, 6 total, including a double digit & a triple digit entry.

(Note - in some cases the number is spelled as a word in the title, as in 'eight miles high')

Is it the Beatles?

One After 909
Two of Us
Revolution #1
Revolution #9 (Dave's never actually played this, has he?)
and damn if I can think of any others right now, though Paul solo and with Wings would add to the totals ("1984," has Dave ever played "Figure of Eight"?) ...

That doesn't make it obvious.   :P

I can't think of any number songs from U2, actually.

Four Tops had "7-Rooms of Gloom," but I'm sure Dave's never played "Just Seven Numbers (Can Straighten Out My Life)."

Four Seasons had "Opus 17" but that's about it.

And before you posted this hint, I was thinking about guessing Dylan b/c of "Rainy Day Women #" and "Sooner or Later (One of Us Must Know)," but I doubt we've ever gotten "Love Minus Zero" or any of the really early numbered efforts.

Time for another.

This summer I vowed to get the Db up to date, after not having done so since last Oct, but it took me a while, and by the time I had sorted & scrubbed the data from Nov to mid-July, it was already late Aug.  So I quickly added the last six weeks up to Aug 31, which leads me to the following question.

Between mid July & the end of Aug, which of the following 10 songs were  new entries in the Db?*

Allman Brothers - Statesboro Blues
Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love
CCR - I Put A Spell On You
Doors - Hello, I Love You
Elton John - Elderberry Wine
Eric Clapton - Tulsa Time
Huey Lewis & The News - If This Is It
Rolling Stones - Angie
Rush - Big Money
Talking Heads - Wild Wild Life

*at this point the definition is a song certainly not heard for the preceeding 40 months, and also not in any of the 70% of sets that are in the Db for the 3 years before that.

That's right, and those were just the most interesting out of 33 songs that qualified.  So despite my occasional (okay, persistent) griping, Dave still averages about 1 bustout per set, even though I have around 50 sets on record for each of the most popular years (74-84) and at least 30 sets each from 68-89.

The other day looking through my Db I was wondering, what is the smallest number of characters needed to give artist-album title-track title?

Spaces count within names and titles, but not between them.  So for example Steely Dan-Aja-Peg is 10+3+3=16.

I think I found the shortest in rock & roll history, which is 7 total.  It's not in the Db but other tracks from that album are.  Can you figure it out?

HAH! I was gonna go look up the tracks on Boy, having not thought of U2's other three-letter album, but I think Gaz may have nailed it.

Indeed he did.  Kudos!

I had several hints already thought out, but guess I didn't need 'em.

Nearly done scrubbing the data for the latest update, which will give us 4 yrs of uninterrupted data (May '04 - Apr '08).

So here's a Who Am I quiz.

I am a major performer with huge success on the billboard charts for many years.

In all the sets up to Aug '04, I only appeared 3 times, and each was in a Hits From Hell set.

In the next 21 months I appeared 3 times, and in the last 24 months I appeared 7 times, so I think Dave has changed his mind about me.

Well, there was a time when ABBA was HFH only, but that was long ago.  Ms. Madonna Louise Ciccone?

Neil Diamond?

No, it's Madonna.  Neil doesn't appear nearly that often, although he did get a HFH appearance for his duet with Babs once.

What iconic, oft-anthologized top ten hit from 1968 does not appear even once in the 40 sets from that year that made the Db from 2001-2007, but so far this year it has already appeared twice out of 3 sets from 1968?

OK, I confess to having consulted the three '68 setlists we've heard this year, but nonetheless, you must be referring to Vanilla Fudge's You Keep Me Hangin' On.

I am indeed.  This may be the single hardest thing to believe that the Db has ever shown me.  FORTY(!?) sets over 7 years & it's not in there even once?  Crazy.

I'm not surprised, in that Dave has a LOT of late-'60s faves/standbys/semi-Katrinas that he rotates to the exclusion of what you'd think would be obvious choices.

No, that one's still active. It had arrived by the time I woke up this morning, but as of last night it was still out there in the ether. Weird.
