Title: Gray-Haired Ponytail Moment (formerly Come All Ye Grateful)
Post by: RGMike on March 05, 2005, 10:29:39 PM
...Deadheads to Channel 9; KQED is showing The Grateful Dead Movie tonite for Pledge Month.

But meanwhile over on KTEH, they're doing one of those old-school soul spectaculars, and I got sucked in.  Impressively, they had a full orchestra (no singing to cheezy backing tracks for these folks), so there was a real flautist for "Everybody Plays the Fool" with Cuba Gooding SENIOR, and real strings for "Smiling Faces Sometimes".  Sadly, Rufus with some babe trying to do a Chaka imitation on "Tell Me Somethin' Good" was just not the same.  Unanswered question of the night: How many different "Peaches" has "Herb" gone thru in the last 40 years? But 1979 Pazz & Jop Winner "Reunited" sounded mighty fine, hey hey. And the occasional vintage clips of Stevie, Gladys and others too expensive to appear live were groovy, especially the one of a very young Al Green.  Usher, eat yer heart out!

And Ray Parker Jr is yet to come!

And speaking of Old School, I'm listening to the Kiss Sunday Oldies Show, and the theme this hour is "duets". Not only did I hear Rene y Rene doing "Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero" for the first time in decades (!), but they played Gladys & Marvin doing a live duet of "Grapevine"! WTF? Never heard it before and he didn't identify the source so I have NO clue where it was from.

Thanks for the tip to check out PBS. Rod Stewart on KTEH now. Suze Orman or KQED. Rod wins.

And to close out the weekend, Joel Selvin is doing a salute to Jeff Beck on his show on the Bone, er, I mean "KSAN Underground Radio." All sorts of tasty stuff from various points in his career.  Jeff plays with Rod, Jeff plays with Stevie, Jeff plays with himself... well, you know what I mean.

AND -- saving the best for last, he played Mr Beck backing up Lulu (!) on "Drown in My Own Tears" from the Scorsese PBS "Blues" docu. Wow!

I heard some of Joel's show, the one that knocked me out was the instrumental cover of "Day In The Life", which JS in his inimitable style called one of the masterpieces of Beck's career.

Heard the first part of Little Steven's show, including that Tegan & Sara song that Mike said was a former "Coolest Song In The World".  After a few seconds I was sure that I'd ID'ed it correctly, and Little Steven confirmed that it's on their current album So Jealous, as is the track KFOG has now picked up from KCNL (which picked it up frm KROQ), "Walking With The Ghost".  Gonna have to check them out more, not least because Tegan & Sara are Canadian lesbian identical twins.

Indeed, I'd never heard that "Day in the Life" -- that album mostly got press for having godawful Beatle covers by Goldie Hawn & Robin Williams.

I first thought "Walking With the Ghost" was "Walking with the Goat" -- I figured it was a tribute to Stevie Nicks

look for somewhere in the middle, crowd shot, side view, big guy in beard and ponytail, blue work shirt.  It's quick, but pretty unmistakeable!

And here it is, 9:45 on the Morning show.

First time I heard it, I thought this sounded like some of Sam Phillips' (T-Bone Burnett's wife, not the Sun Records honcho)  early 90s material.

It's a Gray-Haired Ponytail 2-1/2 hours as KQED runs another Pledge Month Wonder, "The 60s Rock Experience".  Gaz! it's a re-formed Association doing "Along Comes Mary"! And the Grass Roots. And Eric Burdon (riding the servants, er, Serpent again). And Scott MacKenzie (with the longest gray-haired ponytail of all).

Unlike last week's fab Soul special, with its full orchestra, some of the artists (the Association in particular, at least so far) appear to be "supplemented" by the original recordings of their hits.  Looks like I missed 3DN's Chuck Negron...

Speak Tsou-Tsou's name, and Tsou-Tsou will appear.

I was just reading up on the Association the other day.  Apparently, the drummer, Ted Bluechtel (whom a friend's friend claims to have hooked up with) was the last remaining original member of the band by the end of the '70s, and so retained ownership rights to the band name ... which he thereupon leased out to anyone paying cash on the barrel, resulting in a number of bands touring as "the Association" with no legitimate claim to the band's name or legacy.  I wonder if it was one of these bands that played this fest.

These guys were old; they were the original group (which seemed to be the whole point of the show). John Kay of Steppenwolf was quite the hot daddy, IMHO.  Nice vintage B&W clip of the Moodies doing "Nights in White Satin" that I'd never seen before, too.

More Geezer Rock: tonite's Joel Selvin show was a collection of Who rarities and oddities. Among the goodies: Motown covers ("Heat Wave" and "Baby Don't You Do It", the latter the B-side of "Join Together" I think Joel said); Stones covers ("Under My Thumb", which they recorded to help the Stones with legal (drug bust) problems in the '60s; Pete's demo of "Bargain"; "Water", the B-side of "5:15"; and the obligatory Coke commercials. But the Keith Moon "Great Shakes" spot that Bob Stroud is so fond of did not make an appearance.

Stayed up last night like a twenty-something with a head full of blotter (without the benefit
of either, alas) and listened to the entire KFOG broadcast of the Grateful Dead show in Santa
Clara.  Trey isn't Jerry, but he's done his homework and fit in well with the band.  Dead shows
are notoriously uneven, but I thought everybody played quite well.  It's clear that they put a
lot of effort into preparing for this to ensure they would end on a high note, as it were.  (There
was one big screw-up during The Eleven, when they apparently started singing the wrong verse,
then sputtered out after a few words.)  A little research shows the boys have been pulling out
much of this old material in recent years, but I think one or two of these numbers haven't
appeared in decades.  I think I got the set list correct.  I'm not working tomorrow, so I'm going
listen again tonight.  I fully expect Dark Star, and probably another rare track or two from an
early album.  It was epic, man!

ETA:  Even with KFOG editing out the set break, the show ran for over three and a half hours.
It didn't air until 1:00 am.  Tonight's concert starts an hour earlier, and the broadcast may well
begin before midnight.

For me, the Sunday show was the Grateful Dead, Saturday was like Phil and Friends.  It reminded me of many of our 10@10 discussions, and the struggle between whether a song is worth hearing based on either its quality or LN quotient.  Saturday was a real treat for the crowd who favors rarities.  Lots of stuff that hasn't been played in ages, and nothing newer than Truckin'.  Lots of relentless jamming, etc.  I'm old enough to appreciate all the rarities, but it wasn't really what I wanted.  Saturday opened promisingly, and I was near tears during Uncle John's Band.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show, but most of it was "gee, look at us playing this rare song!" stuff.   It was also a yin-yang experience for me, setting-wise.  On Saturday, some friends invited us at the last minute to go via the bosses luxury suite, which apparently none of the bosses wanted to attend.  A totally unreal experience of how the ruling class lives.  On Sunday, we were behind the stage way the hell up in section 418.  On Sunday, Brown-eyed Women, Loser, Row Jimmy, and Black Peter were all in the first set, and all was forgiven!  Yes, there was a lot of sloppy playing, but the beast that is the Grateful Dead came out to play with us.

The PBS Newshour did a couple of segments about the Grateful Dead around the time of the Chicago shows:

From the big bang to cosmic vibrations, Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart plays the rhythm of the universe  (8:26) (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/big-bang-cosmic-vibrations-grateful-deads-mickey-hart-plays-rhythm-universe/)

Mickey Hart, a well-known drummer for the Grateful Dead, has collaborated with astrophysicists on music that reflects the origins of the universe, and with neuroscientists to figure out how music stimulates different parts of damaged brains.  Special correspondent Mike Cerre follows Hart’s exploration of music and the universe, and our human response to rhythm.

In final concert, Grateful Dead bids farewell to faithful followers  (8:05) (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/final-concert-grateful-dead-bids-farewell-faithful-followers/)

Over three days, the legendary, era-defining Grateful Dead offered a series of final concerts at Chicago's Soldier Field.  Jeffrey Brown reports on the rock band's long, strange musical trip that has inspired an almost cult-like following among its fans.

Is there a name for those snippets of music that get played going into a commercial
during (sports) broadcasts?

Anywho, someone running the Niners coverage must be a Deadhead.  During the
divisional playoffs they played a bit of Estimated Prophet ("California!  A prophet on
the burning shore...").  During the NFC championship game, it was a brief piece of
Saint of Circumstance ("This must be heaven, tonight I cross the line...").  And once
going into a commercial during the Superbowl, we heard the opening notes of Bertha.
