Title: the Oscar Movie-Quote Quiz
Post by: RGMike on February 21, 2007, 07:38:24 AM
Happy Oscar Week! ABC’s ad campaign for this year’s Oscarcast involves famous movie quotes, most of ‘em pretty short and fairly obvious (“Show me the money”, “Stella!”, etc). So here are 40 quotes from 40 different films. Each film was nominated for at least one Oscar. Name the films; bonus Frink points if you can name the actor or actress involved.

1. "I'm the guy who does his fucking job. You must be the other guy."
2. “Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets."
3. "I think what we have on our hands here is a dead shark."
4. “If Jesus came back, and saw what was going on his name, he'd never stop throwing up."
5. “Then the question is, who gathered up all these remarkably different cultures and taught them all how to park their cars on their lawns?"
6. “Sleeping in the streets and pulling out their hair for someone they never knew. And they think *we're* mad! "
7. “You can't fight in here, this is the war room"

10. “Did you know the human head weighs 8 pounds?"
11. “You’re not gonna say that now! You’re not gonna say *that* NOW!”
12. “Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!"
13. “Give my daughter the shot!”
14. “It wasn't a miscarriage. It was an abortion.”
15. "It rubs the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again!"
16. “Frankly, you're beginning to smell, and for a stud in New York, that's a handicap”
17. “I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot! "
18. "Everyone wants to be us."
19. “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."
20. "What do you want me to do? Dress in drag and do the hula?!"
21. “I have this thing about saxophone players ...especially tenor sax. I don't know what it is but they just curdle me, all they have to do is play eight bars of "Come To Me, My Melancholy Baby" and my spine turns to custard”
22. “I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve. And I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days”
23. “In short, to recap it slightly in a clearer version, uh, the words of David Cassidy in fact, uh, while he was still with the Partridge Family, uh, ‘I think I love you’”
24. "He was as tough and romantic as the city he loved. Behind his black-rimmed glasses was the coiled sexual power of a jungle cat -- I love this -- New York was his town. And it always would be."
25. “There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and Dupont, Dow, Union Carbide and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today”
26. “I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors in the ballpark -- and whadda I get? A one-way ticket to Palookaville”

He will look attractive and he will be nice and helpful and he will get a job where he influences a great God-fearing nation and he will never do an evil thing... he will just bit by little bit lower standards where they are important. Just coax along flash over substance... And he'll get all the great women.”
39. “Great art is about conflict and pain and guilt and longing and love disguised as sex, and sex disguised as love... and let's face it, you got a big head start.”
40. “Girlie, tough ain't enough.”

I can't believe you included #30.   :P

OK, here are the easy ones:

9. Glengarry Glen Ross (Alec Baldwin)
16. Midnight Cowboy (Dustin Hoffman)
17. Sideways (Paul Giamatti)
22. Bull Durham (Kevin Costner)
25. Wall Street (Michael Douglas)
30. Harold and Maude (Ruth Gordon)
33. M*A*S*H (Elliott Gould)
35. Working Girl (Melanie Griffith)
37. Fargo (Frances McDormand)

I recognize a number of other ones but not well enough to remember the movie.

ETA: After further reflection, I realized I got #25 wrong. But then I had to google to confirm it, so I concede that one.

Correct on all, and yes, #25 is not Wall Street. But it's a Morey fave.

BTW, speaking of Alec Baldwin,  have you been watching 30 Rock? Baldwin is just tremendous. They did an ep in which NBC has an annual day where the underlings get to boss-around their bosses, called "Bottoms Up" Day (!) And so Baldwin's character turns to his underling and says "I'm going to be your bottom, Kenneth, and I want you to ride me as hard as you can" ... as only Alec Baldwin can read such a line. Hilarious.

Urth got everything I knew except #29, which I believe is "Tootsie."

Indeed it is!

If you don't recognize the Woody Allen quotes, you'll have to leave NYC by Friday.

Funny, I was thinking #29 was Woody Allen for a bit, but then recanted. Glad I held off.

Speaking of Woody:

36. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (Woody Allen)

It's Woody, but not that film (unless he's used the line twice, which is possible -- he's used the phrase "polymorpously perverse" 3 times iirc).

But Geoff and Rod are correct on #s 25 and 7, respectively.

12.  The Truman Show (Jim Carrey)
23.  About a Boy (Hugh Grant -- definitely Hugh Grant, may have the movie wrong)
26.  On the Waterfront  (Brando) (guessing on this one a bit)

Yep, wrong Hugh Grant movie.  Gah!  And I just watched it (the right one) again like two weeks ago!

Quote
16. “Frankly, you're beginning to smell, and for a stud in New York, that's a handicap”

This morning on the Request-o-rama-o-rama, Dave tossed this exact line out to be identified by the Fogheads. Coincidence? You be the judge.

I dialed but couldn't get a ring, and the guy that got it asked for Little Feat's Willin'.

#19 was a favorite quote of my old friend Lorch from the Schwab days.  He never told me what movie it was from, though contextually I took it to be one of those Mafia reminiscences like Goodfellas or A Bronx Tale.

And I'm stumped on the rest.

I knew the correct answers for #25, 19 and 23 before I read the commentary in late posts.  #36 is just a guess based on the fact that you already said it's Woody.

8. "It's a hell of a thing killing a man. You take away all he is and all he's ever going to be." - Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven
10. “Did you know the human head weighs 8 pounds?" - Jonathan Lipickny (sp?) in Jerry Maguire
11. “You’re not gonna say that now! You’re not gonna say *that* NOW!” - Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
14. “It wasn't a miscarriage. It was an abortion.”  - Diane Keaton in Godfather II
18. "Everyone wants to be us." - La Streep in The Devil Wears Prada
19. “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."  - the guy who played Clemenza in The Godfather
20. "What do you want me to do? Dress in drag and do the hula?!"  - Timon (Nathan Lane) in Lion King
23. “In short, to recap it slightly in a clearer version, uh, the words of David Cassidy in fact, uh, while he was still with the Partridge Family, uh, ‘I think I love you’” - Hugh Grant in 4 Weddings...
25. “There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and Dupont, Dow, Union Carbide and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today”  - Ned Beatty in Network
28. “She needs me. It's not as if she were a maniac, a raving thing. She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?”  - Tony Perkins in Psycho
31. “I was cured, alright.”  - just a guess, Malcolm McDowell in Clockwork Orange
34. “Most people never have to face the fact that, at the right time and the right place, they're capable of... anything!”  - John Huston in Chinatown
36. "The last time I was inside a woman I was in the Statue of Liberty" - Woody in Crimes & Misdemeanors
40. “Girlie, tough ain't enough.”  - another from Clint, this time Million Dollar Baby
