Title: Not Cool, Not Funny Stuff on the Internet
Post by: princessofcairo on January 24, 2007, 12:49:18 PM
I'm obsessed with The Cohens (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6279061.stm). Here's the only thing I've read (aside from the article which appeared in Saturday's El Pais) that expresses how creepy the whole story is:

Quote
Israeli Court Allows Woman to be inseminated with Soldier’s Sperm…
Here’s an interesting look into the state of “morality” in this world…
I found an interesting article on FOXNews.com;
Israeli Court Allows Woman to be inseminated with Dead Soldier’s Sperm Without his Written Consent
The headline itself is of questionable morality. Without his consent? How was the sperm obtained?
Well….it gets worse, much worse. The man whose sperm was used has been dead since 2002, when he was killed by a sniper in Gaza. Yes, you read correctly…he’s dead. Well, that explains why they didn’t have his written consent.
Private Keivin Cohen – age 20 when he died – will father a child 6 years after his death. His sperm was obtained AFTER his death. His parents, who left Iran when Keivin was 5 years old, petitioned a family court in Ramat Gan, a town near Tel Aviv “to fulfill his desire to start a family,” even though Private Cohen never himself make the request for such a judicial step.
Not only will he father a child after his death, he never knew the woman who will ultimately become the mother of his child. She was selected by a family charity and the Cohen family. His mother, Rachael, is finally able to live her dream of becoming a grandmother.
The Cohen family has fought for four years to have this occur. Cohen’s mother said that she is acting as her own son would have wished:
Every time I go to his grave and touch his cold tombstone, I tell myself how wonderful it would be to hold a warm child in my arms instead, For Keivin, it was his soul’s desire to have children.
A statement like this makes me wonder if Keivin’s mother is acting upon her own grief, and not the wishes of her son. This is probably one of the creepiest things that I have ever heard. I question the morality of such actions.
What do you tell the child when he/she asks about their father? How do you tell a 3- or 4-year-old that his/her father died 6 years before he was even conceived? What do you tell the child about how this came about? A child’s natural curiosity makes them ask questions terribly difficult to answer, I would not want to be the parent who has to explain this one.
Mrs. Cohen says that she was guided in her decision by her dead son:
An hour after being told that he had been killed, I took his picture and started talking to him. I asked him, ‘Where are all the children you wanted?’ Then looked at the picture and heard him saying ‘Mum, it’s not too late. There is something you can take from me.’ Then it came to me – your sperm, that’s what you want me to take from you.’ Right there, I asked the officers who came to visit to make sure his sperm be kept.
I wonder who obtained the sperm and how it was done? I wouldn’t want THAT job.
I have some SERIOUS problems with this: If my child had died, I’m not sure that my first thought would be about obtaining sperm so that I could have his children brought into the world. It’s disgusting! I guess I wonder what she would have done if it had been her daughter instead of her son.
My next question is this: How do you pick the person to inseminate? By lottery? Did she have to take some kind of test? Did she have to look a certain way? What guidelines did they use to choose her? How do you make this kind of choice? It’s just awful. Did they have a “Miss Have the Baby Pageant?”
The family was assisted in its campaign by New Family, an Israeli NGO that described the ruling as “dramatic development” for those who wish to make a ‘biological will.’ The problem here is that all the parents have is their word. There is no written document or any other proof that their son would have wanted this to take place. This case reminds me of the Terry Schiavo case. No one knows what his wishes would have been. Maybe he would have wanted children only if he could raise them.
A year later, the family approached a medical sperm bank seeking permission to use it for insemination. When the request was turned down, New Family began a legal action that concluded successfully for the family this week. Is this New Family the Israeli ACLU?
There was a problem for a while in that the Attorney-General said that the only person who could ask permission for this was a spouse. Private Cohen wasn’t married and he had not prepared a biological will, but the family had testimony, including video recordings, in which he expressed his desire to have children. Yeah, but like this???
Irit Rosenblum of New Family said:
The parents felt it was their mission to fulfill his wish. They had to go through psychological tests and then the next hurdle was to find a mother. It took a year and a half but we found one. There is a legally drafted contract between the mother and Keivin’s parents guaranteeing that their only responsibility is to be the grandparents of the child when he or she is born.
OK, but what if she has the child, or even becomes pregnant and decides to go to another country and they never see the child again? As the mother of the child, she has a right to do so if she wishes.
Why did Cohen’s parents have to have psychological testing? What does testing them accomplish?
I wonder if the Cohen family was thinking of their son or themselves? Do they REALLY wish to fulfill the wishes of their son, or do they want their son “back”?
My guess is that this is a selfish act. I know I wouldn’t want this done to me. I want to be able to raise my children myself. I wouldn’t want to be inseminated by a dead man, either. Makes me wonder: what happened to decency and morality?

I realize I never get tired of pointing out what an idiot Mick Lasalle is but good lord -- check out this quote from his blog today, writing about the latest Rock'n'Roll HOF inductees:

"Yesterday, the Ronettes got in. If they had a hit besides "Be My Baby," I haven't heard it. Does getting into the Hall of Fame mean that you were kind of OK? If you had one hit that earned a modest place in western civilization, is that enough?"

Heaven help us -- this man gets PAID for being a moron. He thinks the Ronettes only had one hit?  He doesn't understand how a body-of-work connected to Phil Spector gets you into the RnRHOF? Whaaa???

TANC -- I've been listening to the Spector box set the past 2 days. Today, disc 3, which includes the Ronettes doing an early Harry Nilsson comp, "Paradise", the same one later covered by the post-Diana Supremes.  I want to strap LaSalle into a chair and make him listen to every Ronettes track in this set. Twice.

My pleasure--the man is an idiot (as you so rightly pointed out) who doesn't deserve a job writing for a major newspaper. Oh, that's right--we're not talking about a major newspaper, we're talking about the Chronicle. In any case, he is the Peter Principle incarnate.

I really fail to see the homophobia, direct or implied, in Gaynor's statements.  I'm generally anti-proselytization, so I wasn't digging what she had to say, but neither did she judge anyone's sexuality or suggest that it can change.  The word homophobia loses a lot of its traction when it's applied haphazardly as a commenter did below the story.

God knows I agree that we toss the "H" word around too easily, but Gloria seems to be tip-toe-ing around whatever it is she wants to say. She repeatedly refuses to answer the questions about whether gays are sinners, but on the other hand, she doesn't say "you can be gay and still love Jesus", which would've been a pretty simple statement.  Sounds like she's trying to appeal to the Fundies without inciting a homo boycott.

I personally give people the right to tiptoe around statements when they don't want to make blanket statements.  It's poor play on her part to talk halfway when she isn't ready to make such a statement.  But I won't fill in the blanks for her to say what I think she's itching to say.

PS: You're absolutely right that she failed to confirm this and that it would have been the most simple thing to say that would have appeased us all.  She failed there.  But I'm not ready to extrapolate that to other sins.

Reports are filtering in that Air America host Randi Rhodes was severely beaten Monday night while walking her dog on 39th and Park. "Rhodes was beaten up pretty badly, losing several teeth and will probably be off the air for at least the rest of the week," writes Talking Radio. Air America, when reached for comment on the listener call-in line, said, "We don't want to feed the inaccurate rumor mill. Also, we don't know." Though the attacks haven't been reported elsewhere, Rhodes' website does mention that she isn't feeling well and has gone as far as creating a little church sign to that effect. Sam Seder is filling in for her. Murky!

Olbermann did a segment on this story tonite.  Apparently this is the third year in a row the father asked Shop-Rite to do the "Hitler" cake -- and the 3rd time they've refused. Last year he requested a swastika decoration!  Also the 2nd or 3rd time it was Wal-Mart to the rescue.  Shop-Rite offered to give him a decorating gun with icing in it so he could decorate it himself; he said that wasn't good enuf. He's quite a piece of work, methinks.

Yep, he obviously knows it's inflammatory and he's ramming it down the throats of the people in his community, so he looks like the "victim." A terrible way to use one's kids for his own agenda. I hate to think how people react to the kid, and wonder how his dad explains it to him.

Do any of you know anything further about this rumor posted at Gawker.com?

Quote
Murky!

Randi's been off the air, and her network, Nova M, seems to have gone under.  The owner, Sheldon Drobny has been hospitalized due to a breakdown (or worse).

It's incomprehensible that they'd seriously consider shuttering the Chron, but hemorrhaging $50M per year is a whole lot of argument to the contrary. Still, there has to be some value there to a potential buyer, if it comes to that.

Btw, I saw a copy of the "remade" Chron for the first time recently--I barely recognized it. I feel like Gertrude Stein talking about Oakland--there's no 'there' there anymore. And if the Chron goes away, there really won't be.

Just curious about your thoughts on the Chron redesign: is your negative reaction to the graphic presentation?  or is the "no there there" comment about changes in news coverage?

Took me awhile to quantify my reaction, but here goes: I think initially I was just reacting to the different look--the use of a serif typeface in the heds where I'd been used to seeing sans serif all those years, although I guess they started phasing that in a couple years ago. (I breathed an audible sigh of relief when I opened to the Movie Guide page to find that it still looked like it always has--at least one thing hadn't changed.)

However, in reading thru the actual content, it seems  like they're giving much more cursory coverage of the subjects they are covering--it's got a much more USA Today feel to it than it once did. Seems as though they're trying to fit as much as possible into a smaller space. And I suspect there are more stories not being covered at all.

However, if it means the paper can weather this storm of recession and emerge alive on the other side, I am willing to make that sacrifice. I am an old-school newspaper reader from way back (i.e. I started reading the Chron before I was 10), and am afraid soon I won't have any other choices for a hard-copy newspaper other than the NYTimes, WSJ, LATimes, and the aforementioned USA Today (and I use the term newspaper loosely in its case).

that recent graphic makeover happened just a couple weeks ago, and most people who wrote in said they didn't like it.  But people don't like change typically, so this wasn't a surprise.  Also, people are more likely to complain than give compliments.  (People really enjoy being able to say "you suck even more now" thanks to the anonymity provided by the interwebs.)

but thanks for the comments. I'll acknowledge that it does have a more "USA Today" look in some ways and in bits and pieces.
The capsule reads -- short single paragraph items --  sort of remind folks of that paper, but the Chron has featured various section digests for a long time -- it's just that now those digest items are broken out with a graphic treatment.

As the paper loses more journalists and editors, new coverage will suffer, so it's not a stretch to say that some things are not being covered  -- there's just not enough resources to do so.

Definitely not cool:  I realize Terrance Hallinan was good friends with the Mitchell Bros, but he's saying the killing that Jim Mitchell's son is accused of was not, in his opinion, premeditated. The guy brought a baseball bat to the house of an ex-girlfriend -- a woman who had a restraining order against him -- and killed her. WTF, Terry?

prob not,  from the home paper's story (http://www.romenews-tribune.com/pages/full_story/push?article-Free+burial+story+makes+nationwide+headlines%20&id=5340509), a commenter says:

"I actually called the funeral home and asked the question some of you are wondering on "Can I come in and sign the contract and if I get killed by a drunk driver, would you pay for my funeral too?", I was told no, that this was to bring public awareness to the drinking/drugging while driving problem. That they had had a family member die because of this and just wanted to make sure everyone who plans on doing this are aware of the consequences of their actions before hand I guess. Humm, sounds kinda backwards to me, don't ya think?"

no problems on our end that we know of.. There's a chance you cached a 'bad' version of our CSS somewhere along the ayt. Can you clear your browser's cache and try reloading?  If it persists, can you msgs me a screenshot of the bad page?

Cleared the cache and problem solved. I guess I been out of the interweb biz too long--I shoulda known that.

Apologies if any of you got an e-mail from me today. Seems my address book was compromised by some kinda malware and spammed everyone I've ever corresponded with. And for god sakes, don't click it. Run your antivirus just to be on the safe side. Sorry.  :-[

The thing is... why would you hire a "celebrity" to do a duck voice in the first place?  All the duck ever says is "AFLAC". Any out-of-work voice actor or deejay -- hell, any five-year-old -- could do that.

I always thought it was someone doing a really bad Gilbert Gottfried impression, not the man himself.

That said, I think I have never laughed harder in my life than when GG took the podium several years back at the Friar's Club roast of  Hugh Hefner.  At Beej's b-day gathering the subject of celebrity roasts came up, and I made this point & everyone who'd seen it agreed.  Don't have time to look for it on YouTube today, but I'm sure it must be out there somewhere.

This is the damndedst thing: The URL for our old fave the Top 40 Database (the song-lyrics sorted by year site) is this:

http://ntl.matrix.com.br/pfilho/html/top40/index.html

and it works fine on my home PC but I cannot get it to come up on my work computer -- I get the Windows, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message.  Weird, 'cause when my employer blocks certain sites we get a specific message fom IT telling us so. So why would this be happening only at work? Anyone else not able to pull up that site?

If you type in [name of city] weather into Google, you get a basic weather report at the top of the listings, which is usually good enough for me.

Weather Channel proper has gone off the rails as far as I'm concerned, so not surprised that their website is more of the same. The numerous TLC-style tabloid shows drive me nuts; I just want to see the weather.  Of course the only time people would tune in for more than a couple minutes is during hurricane season or when there's a blizzard on the east coast.

I use Weather Underground for my weather needs (wunderground.com) and have no complaints. Their app rocks it, too.

at this moment, three different weather sites:

WeatherChannel - SF 65 degrees
AccuWeather -  SF 71 degrees
WeatherUndergound - SF 73 degrees.

Given that it's been overcast all day, I'm guessing it's towards the lower end of that spectrum

SF's microclimates can produce wild swings in current temps at any given time.  I know wunderground has weather stations all over the city - they prob got a reading from the Mission, while weather channel is out at SFO .. or something.

The notion that a large area is going to have identical atmospheric temperature readings
throughout is untenable.  Even geographically homogenous regions without San Francisco's
climate differences are going to exhibit a small range of differences.

Let me bore you with one more thing.  Nature is exceedingly lumpy.  Instead of a smooth Photoshop gradient, the air is full of small homogenous layers.  It's called laminar flow.  But, I also believe the measuring devices are probably not that well calibrated either.
