Thanks to all who made the Great Amoeba Run of '06. A good time was had by all. Wanted to share my booty with you all. Er, poorly worded, but you know.
Round One (in the company of Geoff, Urth, and Alicat):
Listen to the Music: '70s Female Singer/Songwriters (bought it for "Diamonds and Rust" and "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me," but other gems on it too)
Storytellers: Singers & Songwriters (bought it for "City of New Orleans" and "Ol' '55," but lots of great stuff on it, including Tom Rush's "The Circle Game," which Geoff had clued me in to the existence of literally minutes prior)
Various Interpretations of Music From Vintage Disney Films (bought on Urth's strong recommendation)
Yoko Ono, Season of Glass (the album she recorded upon John's murder)
Box Tops, The Letter (cheapo GH comp I bought to have "Neon Rainbow," but they do a cool "Whiter Shade of Pale" too)
John Travolta Sings (bought for novelty purposes from the Scientology section of the store [!]).
I am listening to the latter right now, and wow. It's like John met Pitch at a cocktail party, sniffed his nose and turned the other way. The Top 10 hit (!) "Let Her In" is a "My Eyes Adored You" knockoff, and he essays covers of Eric Carmen's pretty "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" and the HFH "Right Time of the Night." And the album closer? "What Would They Say (Theme From The Boy in the Plastic Bubble)." As Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up.
CD burns of any of the above available on request, natch. This club can make for a nice lending library.
Round Two was with the Alicat only, and she had to bail while I was still rooting through the cutout bins:

KBC Band (and hey Geoff, there's another CD copy of Baron von Tollbooth in the JA/JS stacks, if you're interested)
All this for $52.08. I am pleased.

Yep, that's the one. Found a copy for $6 in the Tom Waits bin, and since I have two copies in the house already, passed it on to Joe, knowing he would dig it.

My only buy was a disc by Earl Greyhound, Soft Targets. I still haven't investigated who the group is but listened to the CD as I drove home. Good guitar and drums. Mostly all songs were OK. For $4.99, I'm happy.
Joe, I burned you a copy of Greyhound, LFTA 13, The Raconteurs, and an Alicat compilation disc. Mail later this week.

Got a very cool double-CD Kinks: the Ultimate Collection (an import, apparently) at Virgin during their current $10 sale -- a rare case of something being cheaper (new) at the store than it is (used) on Amazon. It's about 3/4 Reprise stuff, pretty much everything you'd want, and the rest is a smattering of Arista tracks, all of which I have on a "Best of '77-'84" CD that I bought because it included "Father Xmas". Neither CD has "Sleepwalker" for some odd reason.
And due to continuing buffering issues, I'm catching up on my stack of unlistened-to CDs at work today. Now Playing: a fab Detroit Emeralds GH (also an import) that finally came down in price on Amazon -- it went from 29.99 to 24.99 to 17.99 and it's certainly worth that.

Ah, been meaning to list my holiday haul, and since I'm taking another "sickie" today (at my boss's urging), what better time?
Only bought two things at Amoeba when I met Joe, Geoff, and Ali there last week, the Magic Numbers album and a tribute to Teenage Fanclub that I couldn't resist. Was tempted by many others, but managed to hold the line at two.
My real scores came under the tree, where I got:
What It Is--The latest Rhino R&B box that my dear wife found all on her own with no hinting from me whatsoever--I was figuring I'd have to spring for it myself)
The Official Andy Partridge Fuzzy Warbles Collectors Album--all 8 of Andy's series of outtake and demo discs in one handy box, designed to resemble the stamp collector's album I had when I was 10.
NRBQ-Ludlow Garage (an early live set that's been anticipated for the last 4 years or so)
Peter Gabriel-1st album (the man in the car) Completing my library of his albums on CD. Had it on vinyl since it was released, but for some reason never got around to updating to CD, although I did with the rest of his catalog.

I've been seeing that at the Virgin here in New York, and was afraid to buy it because I feared it was one of those "re-recorded by at least one of the original members" fraud discs. Glad to hear it isn't. (Unfortunately, I showed no such justinoimia when shortly thereafter I bought a '70s set for my brother that was such a thing.)

Rod - I, on the other hand, got a book from my friend Brandi called "Horrifically Bad Album Covers." It is what it is. My friends know me too well.

Coolest thing about it: Disc 2 begins with the orig versions of the 3 famously-covered-later songs, "David Watts" (the Jam), "Stop Your Sobbing " (Pretenders) and "Dandy" (Herman's Hermits). "Dandy" is one of my very fave HH singles; I didn't find out until just a couple years ago that it was a Davies composition. And once I knew that, I was like, "Duh!"

With a gift certificate to Borders I purchased Stop Making Sense on DVD (I had to kick in a bit). Watching on my computer tonight as I pay bills. Just great stuff...

Inspired by the 1-2-punch of Dave playing "Opportunities" and Rob playing "Suburbia" in the same week, I found on Amazon a great 2-CD Pet Shop Boys best-of called Pop Art. Took it to the gym today and it turned out to be 2-1/2 hours of genius. Just amazing, and highly recommended.

I finally took the recommendations of a few of you (especially Mike) and bought some Boz. Slow Dancer, Silk Degrees, and Down Two Then Left were bundled together as sort of a mini box set, so I jumped on it. And am grateful for the results so far.
So, thanks. And it leads me to an upcoming project that involves yinz guys.
In the near future, I'm going to budget $50 for iTunes singles coming from recommendations. Namely, yours.
You guys have gotten to know my musical tastes over several years now and know me pretty well. We all suggest stuff at random points throughout any number of threads -- "You have GOT to hear this!" and such -- and now it's time to do something about it. The first five club members to send me lists of The 10 Songs I Must Insist Gaz Acquaint Himself With: I'll take you up on the offer. And I won't hem or haw unless it's something I already own. But they must be available on iTunes.

I'm eager to hear that Carl Bean song; you've piqued my curiosity on it before and I failed to follow up.
Meanwhile, just went to iTunes, seized by a mood, to buy Love's "My Little Red Book." Found out the Rubinoos did a cover of it as well, sounding to my ears like the Buckingham, and I was so entranced I bought both. Bacharach's sense of chords really hits me, and I think that's the whole key to his songwriting.

It's okay. I think I might come to like it more, as it's not one of Kfog's regulars I don't really know it very well. It has an odd sound that might become endearing after enough listens.
Unlike most of LFTA, which I've heard plenty on Kfog. The Andrew Bird thing aint too bad, and the Angelique Kidjo song works as well.

I got mine Saturday. I was n Redwood City and walked over to Peets about 9:15. Peter Finch was scheduled to be there at 10 but I didn't feel inclined to wait. It looked like a comfy Peets with people lounging on leather sofas and reading and visiting. I frequent Peets but never hang out.
I've heard it a few times through now and like it for what it is.

Bought, then listened to a dozen times today: Lighthouse, "Pretty Lady." What a phenomenal arrangement. To think that someone as obscure as Skip Prokop wrote three of my all-time favorites (this, "One Fine Morning," and 3DN's "I'd Be So Happy").

She does a poignant version of "2000 Miles" and even rescues Billy Squier's "Xmas is the Time to Say 'I Love You'" from Cheezeville. Nice work, Ms Love.

indeed, she does -- that was new to me, I don't think i've heard the NRBQ version. Understated production throughout, this isn't imitation Spector, a la her wonderful Little Steven-penned "All Alone on Xmas" from (this is scary) 15 years ago.

Went looking on Amazon for a song that Greg plays often on CGSS, "You'll Never Know" by Hi-Gloss, and ended up with a compilation called Prelude Deep Grooves, from that late '70s/early '80s NYC disco label. And it's 12 classic club hits of that period, only one of which is on any of the many other comps I own (Musique's "(Push Push) In the Bush"). Besides the aforementioned songs, it includes a number of CGSS faves like Bobby Thurston's "Check Out the Groove", The Strikers' "Body Music", several tracks by D-Train that were early '80s NYC radio faves on the legendary WBLS, and the late Sharon Redd's "Can You Handle It?" All in all a delightful surprise that only cost me 10 bucks -- for a UK import, no less.

I'm doing this right now. It took less than 5 minutes to get my first code, after which I was redirected to the Nat'l Guard page at amplify.com & had to spend another minute setting up an account there. After you enter your code it will say that you have 50 credits, and right next to that is a button for Add a code. It took me less than 10 minutes to get an additional 150 credits using email addresses of my wife & kids. No idea how long the site for getting a code will be up, but once you have your credits it tells you that you have until Aug 31 to redeem them. I haven't done too much searching, but they seem to have all the current pop stuff. A search for Beatles only turned up 7 songs from the In The Beginning album, but a search for the Stones turned up seemingly every album ever.
Pretty sweet deal no matter how much spam I get.

obviously a UK collection, and loads of stuff there that never cosssed over, like Cockney Rebel. But that Ten Years After track is truly a lost gem: it was a staple of NYC prog-FM in the early '70s, from their LP Cricklewood Green, which came out on the heels of their Woodstock appearance. Tho' we still hear "I'd Love to Change the World" all too often, I have not heard "LLAM" on the radio in decades, certainly not once since I moved to SF. Seems like something Rob on The Peak should remember.

ETA: glad you liked Ms Sharp-Gamble (yeah, she was married to Kenny Gamble at the time) and her fab take on 10cc. And that Delfonics song is also a fave of mine - I just got a Delfs best-of recently. Their obscurities beat a lot of other people's chart-toppers.

Just looked at the track listing on that Philly box -- great stuff. But what's Dusty's "Brand New Me" doing there -- isn't that from her Memphis sessions? And too bad it doesn't include Billy Paul's terrific disco remake of "Only the Strong Survive", a UK hit that never did anything over here.

That's indeed the title; I heard only a 10-second snippet, the crux of which was "I'll be your keem-o-sabe." His interest in Native American cultures was apparently sincere, so I hope he knew better than to make "squaw" references.

Bought a Nancy Sinatra anthol on Amazon. It arrived yesterday and it's a really crappy package -- no notes, it's on a label called Paradiso out of Belgium. It was cheap, and my first thought was Jeez, I hope it's not re-recorded versions. But it's legit, and includes all the Lee Hazlewood duets. I'm having some velvet morning at work!

Did not know that -- is it another song that Elvis turned down? Can certainly imagine him doing it, or that Mac wrote it with him in mind.

Just got the new Robbie Robertson CD: How to be Clairvoyant http://tinyurl.com/3romnut
Listened to it a few times on the way down and back from LA. I enjoyed it, but it doesn't stand out as uniquely as his last record, Contact From the Underworld of Redboy. Clapton and Winwood contribute, and Pino Palladino plays bass on the whole record. I think Rod and Ali might like this, Mike certainly not, and the spectrum in between...?
Has anyone else heard this?

Robbie is a great guitarist, but can he actually sing? Wasn't he notoriously lip-synching during the taping of The Last Waltz concert? Levon, on the other hand...whadda voice!
On another note, I went to Amoeba this afternoon and purchased Silk Degrees on vinyl. I've never heard this album before (I know, I know.) I actually think I avoided Boz Scaggs because of the yuppie/douchey-Perry's on Union (good breadsticks, though!) crowd association. I might've found his name slightly off-putting too. Anyhoos, love love the album. I had no idea he wrote "We're All Alone". Loved the Rita Coolidge cover as a kid (she sang it muy better too.)

I haven't heard any of the Robbie Robertson yet, but I'll see if I can find some to listen to.
My latest impulse buy is Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Bros, The Dead), Man In Motion. Kind of philly soul, with extended guitar work, horns, etc. I'm liking it well enough but it doesn't really blow me away. Singing isn't really his forte, but he does pretty well on his solo records. Highly recommend his Storyville album--it rules. I don't think he sang much at all during his time with The Band, and certainly didn't sing lead. With the other vocalists in that band, (Helm, Danko, Manuel) he didn't need to.

Boz Skaggs sounds a little like Fozzie Bear when he hits certain notes. In fact, I wonder if Jim Henson named Fozzie after Boz(zie)? :)

Speaking of singing-talking, Lou Reed does that, too. But Lou has better command and can actually sustain more than Robbie.

An album I was unaware of until recently: Shelby Lynne's Just a Little Lovin' -- released 3 years ago, it's a collection of Dusty Springfield covers (plus one original). 1340 The Boardwalk has played her laid-back version of "I Only Wanna Be With You" a few times which sent me Googling and I found the CD on Amazon for less than 3 bucks. Just listened -- very nice and fairly stripped-down (produced by Phil Ramone, of all people). No one will ever be Dusty, but a nice tribute.
ETA: so of course I had to dig out Dusty in Memphis -- was reminded that I first heard "Just One Smile" in the BS&T version (Al Kooper incarnation) and didn't find out until many years later it was a Randy Newman compo.

Randy's been around! Just recently, I was surprised to hear "I've Been Wrong Before" by some artist that escapes me right now. I was only familiar with the H. P. Lovecraft version. Doing a little googling, I discovered Dusty Springfield and many others have done this too, and...Randy Newman was the author! Always something new to learn.
ETA: It was a version by Elvis Costello I saw on TV that started this!

Couple weeks ago I mentioned Eli "Paperboy" Reed, who I discovered via 1340 the Boardwalk. I ordered his most recent Come & Get It from Amazon and it came the other day. It's pretty damn wonderful if ya like that '60s Southern Soul stuff.
TANC: over the weekend, having seen several films at Century Westfield, I was subjected to promos for The Playboy Club, NBC's answer to Mad Men (i.e., a '60s-set series with multiple storylines; see also ABC's PanAm). Anyway, the promo featured a kickin' '60s-style soul number, "Gonna Be an Explosion, Baby" and I thought "Damn who IS that?" Well, of couse it's Mr Reed and it's on this very same CD. Nice how that worked out.

Gaz might be more familiar with them -- all I know is "Come Saturday Morning", a lovely tune. I always lump them in with the Lettermen and such.

Sorry, I couldn't resist! Nobody was more prepared to like Foghat than me. I was a big Savoy Brown fan, and here was almost all of Savoy Brown, reincarnated in a new band. I saw their first gig at Winterland, sandwiched between The Mothers and Ruben and the Jets, and they were horrid, booed mercilessly by the audience. Obviously, it was a bad combination bill!

Listening to a fine 2-CD War anthol (Icon: the Hits & More) and the ones that are NTM are the most interesting -- several mellow instrumentals that are kinda like "All Day Music" without lyrics. Nice stuff.

Picked up a cheap copy We'll Get Over, an early Staples Singers (circa 1969) album reissued on CD with a couple bonus tracks. Really nice stuff, tho' not quite in the funky groove they would find a few years later. Mostly covers of songs I know and like: Sly's "Everyday People", "Games People Play" (Joe South), "End of Our Road" (Gladys/Pips), and Al Kooper's sadly forgotten "Brand New day". My fave may be their soulful rendition of "Give a Damn", the Spanky & Our Gang anthem from that long-ago poverty PSA, which I didn't think ANYONE else had recorded. And (of course) Steve Cropper on guitar and "Duck" Dunn on bass.
Nicest surprise: "A Wednesday in Your Garden", which was NTM and when I looked to see who wrote it, the name listed was... Randal Bachman -- yes, it was a Guess Who LP cut at the time. Color me gobsmacked!

Not a new acquisition, I've had it for years, but I dug a Grand Funk anthol out of mothballs as part of my ongoing early-'70s research -- quite a hodgepodge of good singles and bad album cuts. Smack in the middle of the CD, back-to-back, were 2 of the most unnecessary cover versions of the '70s: Their takes on "Feelin' Alright" and (I'm not kidding) "Gimme Shelter", which rivals BS&T's "Sympathy For the Devil" as worst Stones re-do evah.
Fun fact: Todd Rundgren was inspired to have them remake "The Loco-Motion" after hearing the Raspberries do it at their Carnegie Hall concert.

Listening to Marshall Crenshaw's podcast, "The Bottomless Pit" via wfuv.org -- he played the censored version of the Who's "Substitute", where they, er, substitute the line "I tried walking forward/but my feet walk back" for the infamous "I look all white/but my dad was black " -- never knew that existed.
