So here's what I think:
1 - are we gathering at Mike's on April 1?
2 - when do y'all want to come back out to Castro Valley? I really want to see if we can cajole Urth into showing up with his wife & Ali & Dave with their kids. My wife & kids will be there this time.
3 - a thought I just had...how many of you would be intersted in a group camping experience? I grew up doing this, as my dad was the church youth director (& my mom was the camp cook) for several weekend trips & one 2-week trip per year, usually groups of over 25. I myself have organized and cooked for such groups a few times in my adult life. I have a few extra tents & at least a half dozen extra sleeping bags. We could go as near as Big Basin or far as Yosemite or the High Sierra. Take your pick. Rod could teach us all how to fish, right Lightnin' man?

for the bbq and camping (yay - fishing!!!): my schedule will be up in the air a lot after april...beginning of may is good. and july is good. those are my votes. i'll be in europe all of june.

OK, I get the idea. I'll consult with the wife & see what I can arrange. April fools day (or that weekend) might be cool off the top of my head, but let me confirm. First weekend of May is likely not--our anniversary, so we'll probably be having a getaway somewhere.

Mark, is Saturday April 2 workable for you? I realize that the original premise was April Fools Day, but it'll be a bit easier for us to get out to Castro Valley on a Saturday than it would post-work on a Friday.

well, i did have the april fool's gathering in mind when i made my travel plans. otherwise, i would have left friday night. :)
but, sense and sensibilities deem i should not be too exhausted for the flight, i guess. i could do the weekend before. anyday.

Aside from the fact that poc has to get up early the day after April Fools, I recall that Fri nite totally sucks, parking-wise, in my 'hood; by the time folks get there poc will be ready to leave. And I may be working Saturday mornings for a few weeks myself. So thanks, bub! I'll bring dessert. And since you're hosting you don't have to keep my comedy-records theme if ya don't want to. :wink:

Saturday would be better than a work night. We could color eggs Saturday. I'm willing to play hooky from 6pm Saturday bowling league for this. (Didn't do it for 40 years of Beej, sorry dude) No idea what our Easter plans are, usually big egg hunt meal type thing at MILs.

During lunch on Thursday with the Princess & Dave in Mtn View we identified the weekend before Memorial Day as workable (so Saturday 5/21 is the date). She won't be available again until July sometime.

Sounds good. I have no desire to see the Kathleen Butler Wallflowers either; but you might want 6pm as your cutoff since getting into the city for the fireworks will be hellish after 7. (unless you're thinking of watching from Oakland? I've never tried that.)

Not if you're taking BART from Castro Valley. Catch the train at 7:09 (or 7:29) & you're at Embarcadero 32 minutes later. That gives you 80 (or 60) minutes to find a vantage point.

I'm still good for that date, but not sure if the better half will make it or not. She's taken a new job and often works Saturdays (it's part time), so she might have to take a pass.
And I'll probably do the BART thing as well, so you may end up running shuttles from the CV BART station there, Mark.
There's also an A's/Giants game at Willie Mays Field that night at 5, which will likely end around 8ish, so there'll be a huge clusterfuck at Pier30/32 (and probably all along the Embarcadero) between the arriving kaboomers and those baseball fans that don't choose to stick around for the fireworks.

If the Giants are playing a night game, I would imagine some of Kaboom will be visible, at least to many in attendance at SBC.

The fireworks never start before 9:00. It's usually about 9:10 when Dave gets on the horn & they first ask all the boats to toot their horns, then they ask all the people in the skyscrapers to flash their lights (which was us the past 3 years at Christina's old job).

I'm still good for the date but I'm going to try and NOT bring the kids. IF I take them to my Mom's in SF, I could shuttle any of you SF-ites to CV. I would be passing near Urth, Beej and Geoff.
I have a more relaxed time without them and don't want to burden the childless with unnecessary kid chaos. Also, staying up past 9 leaves them a bit cranky which makes me cranky.

How's it shaping up for everyone? I still encourage anyone thinking of going from my house to the fireworks to come by BART. I'll gladly arrange shuttle service & will almost certainly take BART myself to go into SF for the fireworks.

yeah, I just found out my father-in-law is coming that weekend which means we'll be doing other things. Also we are going to see the Yankees A's game this Saturday, so probably not twice in 2 weeks anyway. Thanks though!

My idea is that people can come over as early as they'd like, so anything after lunchtime is fine, and 2:00 is pretty much ideal. Then we can start BBQ-ing around 5 & eat around 5:30. I will have lots of food, so this doesn't need to be a real pot-luck, although I won't complain if you want to bring something you'd like to share.
I am really going to try to post a list of my whole HD archive of tunes so that y'all can do a little free shopping at MarkTunes. Step one is geting a crossover cable so that tonight I can finally get around to moving the 900+ tunes on my laptop over to join the 4000+ tunes on my PC. Should be something for everybody!

My plan more or less coordinates with Mike/POC's. I'm gonna get on BART at Glen Park around 1:30 as well, so if we work this right, we could well end up on the same train. I figure that way Mark won't have to keep running back and forth to the Bart station.

Just a quick note to say what a great time I had hanging with the gang yesterday over at Mark's casa. I am really glad I finally was able to meet everyone, and plan to be less scarce at these get-togethers in the future. And a big thanks to Mark for hosting, and putting out a big feed for everyone--you rule, man.
Realized as I arrived at Castro Valley BART yesterday afternoon that I spaced out bringing a camera along, and I don't recall seeing anyone else taking shots, so this one may have to live on in our memories, rather than on Geoff's photo page.
And finally, anyone notice we got a new member yesterday, someone who goes by Mus6? Welcome, whoever you are, and sign in please!

Ali, did you put them in a computer or a CD player? Not all CD players (& basically none from more than two years ago) will play MP3's straight from a burned disc. Pop it into a PC & see if you can find the files. If the disc is blank then you really are screwed (sorry).

About the disc, I just didn't do it right apparently. I put it into my PC, tried both drives, nothing. C'est la vie. What I tried to burn was Aretha, Green Day, Chairman of the Bd. and a few others.

This morning Peter was gushing about Sabado Gigante, a hispanic variety show hosted by (I think) a Chilean Jew. Very funny, amusing, long-running show.
Oh my God you need to see "Sabado Gigante." (Literally, "Giant Saturday.") It's a collision of every hack idea to ever appear on a game show or variety show. It's lasted so long because it's never the same thing twice, kind of like "the Price Is Right." Actually, a lot of that, with a little bit of "Let's Make a Deal," a few Mexican wrestlers demonstrating moves in a pool of reclaimed water, people doing Sonny/Cher-esque slapstick routines, and I guess a touch of "Supermarket Sweep." And when Wesson Oil sponsors the show, the entire arena-like audience sings the Wesson theme before the commercial break. It's scary and sweet.

On Wed my folks are driving out to KC to close on the house that they are buying for their retirement, and which is only 20 min from Joel. Sometime in the next 2 - 2 1/2 months they will move away from St. Louis after 33 years. So even if I do go back again it won't be the same anymore.

Last Wednesday, at the spectacular goal-fest Sharks game, they let ME ME ME down ON THE ICE to play one of the silly games in between the 2nd and 3rd periods. I was one of 6 people. Three drove little tractors and three (me) were cheering on "our" drivers. My tractor did not win but I got a t-shirt and was able to walk through the guts of HP and by the locker room (I was thrilled). The fun just never ends!

How about Friday night or Saturday day? Or, after Xmas. I have managed to get something booked every night this comoing week thru Thursday.
When you go to the game on Saturday, get there early for the pre game skate. You can go down to the front by the ice and watch them up close and personal. (not that personal but it's goooood. Mark Smith up close is goooood.) The Sharks warm up at the end by where the Shark head is. Ushers allow you to go down. Last night was stupendous. Once again, more fun that I should have had. One of the rare games Bob goes to with me.

If a group assault on Amoeba is to be undertaken, can I suggest maybe sometime the day of the 26th? Hopefully most of the denizens of the haight will still be sleeping off their Christmas cheer somewhere in the park, and the rest of SF are still off at mummy and daddy's on the Cape. Fun for all ages, and lots of food options nearby if we wanna get a bite afterward.
Can't help as to concert suggestions-I've been woefully out of touch, and there generally aren't many touring bands playing right before or after Xmas, so it's usually local acts. I do know Blackalicious is at the Fillmore on the 27th, but can't think of much else happening during your time frame.

When we came out, the window on our passenger side was totally smashed in. Apparently the stuff I keep in the car is so boring, almost nothing was taken (a few pairs of new socks we jus bought). So, my schedule is now somewhat uncertain, depending on how quickly I can find a place to replace the window.

When we came out, the window on our passenger side was totally smashed in. Apparently the stuff I keep in the car is so boring, almost nothing was taken (a few pairs of new socks we jus bought). So, my schedule is now somewhat uncertain, depending on how quickly I can find a place to replace the window.
Damn, that sucks. Hope you can arrange to get that fixed sometime today or tomorrow, although with the holiday approaching I don't expect it will be easy.

To the extent that I am any judge of Dave's body language I would say that he actually *is* thinking about it, but really hasn't decided. Nor was this something he could really discuss when there was a line behind me out the door and halfway around the corner.
Whether or not we can corral Dave, we should figure out someway/where/when to hook up. My house is available, as long as you don't mind the voyage out almost to Livermore.

I can also host any day but on Sat Dec 6 have a 7pm Sharks game so Saturday after 5pm not good. I'm relatively close to 101 and 280 by Ralston Ave, Belmont.

North Bay is good for me as well, as we'll be staying at my mother-in-law's in San Rafael (but trust me, you don't want to meet at her place). I'll see if I can think of someplace around that area. Maybe Marin Brewing in Larkspur? It's right off the freeway. Or there's another brewpub up in Novato, called Moylan's I think. Or maybe the celebrated 2am Club in Mill Valley, where the cover to Huey Lewis & the News' immortal Sports album was shot.

I have standing offers from two friends to stay with them, and am trying to figure out if any other social plans will be overnighters, so forgive me if I'm a little scattered about deets. Basically I'm hoping other people will set my itinerary for me. :)

I just meant exclusive within SF; The Castro had Indiana Jones 4 in June, but it was playing at Metreon at the same time. This might be a gift to the Castro on Focus Features part since so much filming was done in the 'hood.

A hearty seconding of that, both to the crew that made it to the Citrus Club on Saturday, and those who weren't able to make it--you were missed, but are no less important to this group. Our get-togethers are going to be even more rare for me now that I'm out of state, but it was so fortuitous that Gaz and I were in town simultaneously that I'm glad we were all able to get together in whatever combinations, particularly in light of DM's impending departure.
And I have to say a big thanks for the "Make Cheese Not War" t-shirts that Gaz imported from Murray's Cheese in NYC--one of the top cheese emporia in the Big Apple. Sarah loves hers as much as I do mine, and ya gotta know we agree with the sentiment expressed. Thanks, youse guys! (TANC: About two hours later, when I got back to San Rafael to pick up my in-laws, my mother-in-law gave me a t-shirt as well--from Saxelby's Cheeses, another NYC artisan cheese shop.) And it was great to meet John/Tinka in the flesh--he's a good guy and just as much of a 10@10 geek as the rest of us, so a fine addition to our number. Safe to say the same applies to Wayback, but I'll have to save meeting him for my next time down there (TBD).

Kenny says he knows how to get word to Linda Perez as well, who apparently got wind of our last get together and asked to be included. He wasn't sure if the rest of us would care, and I said I'd be happy to see her & said I was pretty sure you would as well.
If I'm wrong about that somehow, then you need to call Kenny before any plans are made.
Afterwards I left a message with Double D, and told him to start planning ahead.

BTW - anyone know if there's an outfit in SF that rents netbooks by the day or week? I'd like to have something to check email and Web and jot notes while wandering the city over the next 10 days, but I haven't bought a laptop yet.

Well, damn. I was back from fishing, but work piled up some more while I was gone, and I just didn't have it in me to deal with the logistics of a late night in SF after three 12 hr days at the computer. Looks like a great time.

On Monday, March 7 from 6:30pm-9:00pm, in conjunction with the Larkspur Public Library, Richie Unterberger will show rare film clips of women rock and soul performers from the 1950s to the 1980s at the Redwood High School Little Theatre, at 395 Doherty Drive in Larkspur. Included will be clips by Wanda Jackson, Brenda Lee, the Ronettes, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick with the Jefferson Airplane, Nancy Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, Nico, Patti Smith, and others. Admission is free.
In commemoration of International Women's Day, on Tuesday, March 8 from 6:00pm-7:30pm, he'll show rare film clips of women rock and soul performers from the 1950s to the 1980s on the third floor of the Central branch of the Berkeley Public Library at 2090 Kittredge Street in downtown Berkeley. This is *not* the same program as the one he presented on the same theme at the library in 2008, or the same as the program in Larkspur detailed in the above paragraph. This features entirely different clips, including footage of performers such as the Shangri-Las, the Collins Kids, Carole King, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, the Crystals, the Seekers, the We Five, and others. Admission is free.
Also, on Monday, March 14 from 6:30pm-8pm, he'll present an evening devoted to comic and "can you believe this actually happened" vintage rock clips, including oddities by the likes of the Beach Boys, Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Supremes, Arthur Brown, Neil Innes, the Everly Brothers, Johnny Cash, and a bunch of people you've never heard of at the Antioch Library at 501 West 18th Street in Antioch. Funny, I was just at Amoeba on Haight St. last Sunday and picked up a Stiff records compilation CD with The Belle Stars on it for AL (on behalf of RG and I) in hopes that she would finally play Sign Of The Times on 10@10. It cost under $5. Gee, CDs have sure become more affordable...

Yes, I think I'll try to take advantage of this -- maybe tomorrow or Friday. Or Saturday and Sunday ... or all of the above. I don't know all of these bars, but I highlighted what looks tasty just based on first glance. (I'm a whisky fan mostly.) I would not go too far afoot to take advantage of this, but if it's convenient I'd go. Would anyone reading this recommend any of these places?

I saw a few of y'all in various pics but there may have been others who were ducking the cameras. Glad to see that AL did indeed make an appearance. And the mysterious Mr. Dunn revealed his true self. Any good stories? Surprises? Those of us who are geographically challenged are waiting with baited breath.
