I predict Dylan, "Everything is Broken", after an earthquake clip.
-
VHM XTC.
-
Actually "King for a Day" is sounding pretty good--probably not a bustout, but certainly haven't heard it much. Andy and Colin in a smooth jazzy mood.
-
VHM XTC.
BOS for me, though this is a pretty mild excursion for them. Practically Simple Mindsian or Tears for Fearsian.
-
AAAAAAAAAACK! "Good Thing"! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
-
good Katrina!
-
Well, here's the requisite earthquake clip.
-
Shake shake shake, shake shake shake, shake your booty, shake your booty.
Oh, wrong year.

Oh yes it is!
"Mayor of Simpleton" is nearing Katrina status, but this is the Db debut for KFAD. And y'all have hard me beg for this before when he played MOS for the 4th or 5th time.
-
VHM the Ala-rum, "Sold Me Down the River".

I should just get an mp3 of me saying "I know he's played it before". (Tho' obviously not for a long time.)

Speaking of TfF...
-
Noriega actually declared war? That's funny, as I was just watching The Mouse That Roared on TCM the other day.
Ah, TFF, "STSOL". Lovely. But this one Dave really HAS played before.
-
BOS2 (and best segue of set): Sowing the Seeds of Love, with the Noriega clip leading into it. A shameless homage to George Martin's Beatles production style, but a fab tune nonetheless.

When this came out, I was asked if I thought it was a #1 single. I said "a big hit but not a #1". And it peaked at #2.
-
Pete Rose, Zsa Zsa, Ollie North and Jim Bakker. Now THAT'S 1989.
VHM this Henley, not a usual suspect.
-
Another clever segue followed by another likely bustout, although neither as good as the first ones: the scandal clips into Henley's If Dirt Were Dollars.

I'm changing my VHM to a BOS, I'd forgotten how good the lyrics are on this one.
-
Completely different? well, from Henley maybe but a Katrina nonetheless.
-
All right Mark, what's the Katrina status of The Call's "Let the Day Begin"? I don't like this song, and we have to hear it all the time.
-
And now the Dead, sounding waaaaay too slick.
-
"Just a Little Light"? not ringing any bells here.
This set coulda used some Grayson Hugh. or some Neneh Cherry. or some Was/Not Was. or...
-
And now the Dead, sounding waaaaay too slick.
yikes, I had NO idea that was them.
-
And yet another bustout, I'd bet on it: The Dead's Just A Little Light, one of Brent's few contributions to the band's repertoire and probably his best. Sadly, he couldn't find much light for himself--two years later he was dead of an OD.
ETA: Make that one year later--I was thinking this was an 88 set for some reason.
-
Sorry, Dave... "Desire" is from '88 ain't it?
-
I do like Desire. Can't beat the Bo Diddley Beat!

Me too. Missed both of this set & Ginger due to phone calls, but they're all to the good as I suddenly have a very hot lead on a new job.

Post-set comment: I really hate this RHCP "Hey-oh, lissen what I say-oh" song (yes, I know -- it's called "Snow"). Awful lyrics and the whole thing is such a lazy-ass recycling of previous material, I'm amazed this album has actually gotten respectful reviews.

That's 'cause the Chili Peppers, that spunky little alterna-funk band from LA with socks on their weenies, have ascended to Respected Elder Statesman status. From here on they could release recordings of them cleaning their bathrooms and get critical props for breaking new ground. See also: Beastie Boys.

LOL! And I SO totally agree on the Beasties. I never quite understood the adulation -- the first LP was a lot of fun in a bratty, obnoxious sorta way. But I still think that they started out as 3 idiots (or at the very least 3 Middle Class Jewish Boys trying to annoy their parents) doing a (somewhat racist) parody of Run-DMC who started to believe their own press.

BOS Jeff Healey Band, "Hideaway".

I was referring particularly to their more recent output--I think Check Your Head and Paul's Boutique are both pretty damn good records. But agreed, I never quite got the level of adulation that they've been accorded.

TANC: The A's TV folks used "Intergalactic" for a montage on one of their recent pregame shows. Made me wonder how many of the BBs fans (or A's fans, for that matter) have ever heard "Planet Rock", the record that "Intergalactic" is an hommage to.

I may have said this before, but it might bear repeating. "Just a Little Light" was an excellent song, extremely tight, and pretty intense live. The guitar tone was an answer to the New Bohemians "What I Am" which was pretty much a lift of earlier Garcia mu-tron guitar stylings (think "Estimated Prophet" or "Shakedown Street.") Losing Brent was a big blow, especially since this was during a heavy drugged-out Garcia period, and Brent contributed some of the best songs on that last studio album, the ecological "We Can Run" and the tender lullaby "I Will Take You Home."
