Title: 6 April 2006 - it's a "Welcome Back the Sun" set
Post by: RGMike on April 06, 2006, 07:33:41 AM
they're asking for suggestions. Expect "Here Comes the Sun" and the mother of all Katrinas.  Probably Lighthouse's "Sunny Days" too.

Quite a week or 2 of theme sets ahead, assuming Dave does the Tax Day and Earth Day sets on the Friday before each.  And Tuesday April 18th is Earthquake 100 Day.

Good Day Sunshine. Seems inevitable.

I'll listen in the car as I drive up to the ballpark. Pregame parking lot festivities start early!

Go Giants!!!!

#3 is Johnny Nash, I Can See Clearly Now.  Nice, but again, kind of on the predictable side.

Hope we get that Eric Carmen tune, 'shray! Given DM's bias toward Raspberries/EC, I think we've got a good chance.

Of course you mean "Who is Richie Havens" is the question to what Jeopardy answer.  I'll try this one:
"He improvised an entire song at Woodstock."

You must have fixed the typo before I saw it, but I don't know of any killer Santana @ Woodstock trivia.  He had the longest guitar solo?  All I really know is the legend that sprung up around his performance of "Soul Sacrifice" greatly fueled his ultimate success.

Yeah, Amelia caught me in just my Woodsocks.  Not sure which legend you're speaking of here I fear.  The legend I heard was that Carlos was not expecting to go on and had just dropped some acid.  They said "you're going on now", so he did.

All I meant is that it's practically a cliche to say "Santana's legendary performance at Woodstock" in the same way one reads about "Jimi's legendary performance at Monterey" or "Dylan's legendary performance at Newport."

I don't hate that Smashmouth song, but it doesn't belong in this set thematically.  It's not about Sunshine or any ofther form of the weather, literally or metaphorically.  Obviously it has the word Sun in the title, but this is even worse than when Dave threw "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" into the Folsom St. Fair set last year.

So many other songs he could have replaced it with, not least being the one I asked for.

Who had the biggest hit with a Beatle cover? no, that can't be right, can it?

hmm...who would that be? joe cocker?

I suppose the answer to that question is Elton's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", which hit #1 in '74.  I did a cursory search of other #1's & that's the only Beatles cover I noticed.

And you would be correct.  The runners-up:

Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, "Fool on the Hill" (#6, 1968)
Tiffany, "I Saw Him Standing There" (#7, 1988)
Anne Murray, "You Won't See Me" (#8, 1974)
Earth, Wind & Fire, "Got to Get You Into My Life" (#9, 1978)
Silkie, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" (#10, 1965)
Stevie Wonder, "We Can Work It Out" (#13, 1971)

Has Dave ever played Tiffany?  Or Anne Murray?  Or Sergio Mendes?  *sigh*

Great tune.  They used to play it a lot on KDON (Santa Cruz) in the old days!

There's also a #1 hit cover of a song the Beatles had earlier covered, can you think of it?

Loved the guitar solo on the Crapenters version.  Was there a version before the Marvelettes?
