Title: 2 Feb 2017: It's Groundhog Day!
Post by: Davefish on February 01, 2017, 08:20:21 AM
Ten songs and their equally popular "shadows". Sounds interesting. Does that mean it's 20 at 10? Will listen at 10:00.

Ah... it's original versions and their most-famous covers... it's "20@10"!

Song #1 interesting in that I've never heard the original version. It's gotta be Soft Cell on the remake.

#2 presumably a Lou Reed twin-spin. Rock and Roll Animal version wayyyy better.

Ahh, forgot about the Cowboy Junkies version. It's boring though.

That song would have to be Sonny and Cher's I've Got You Babe.

Do they have ten versions of it?

I like RHCP's cover of "Higher Ground". I played that version with an ad hoc band for a company celebration. It was fun.

I'm guessing it's the Lemonheads with the "Mrs Robinson" cover. Anybody know of other ones?

Hope we hear the David Lindley cover of "Do You Wanna Dance", but I bet there are a bunch of these.

ETA: Ramones a nice touch. I actually thought for a minute that the Mrs Robinson cover was them. It's certainly in their wheelhouse. Possibly in their bailiwick as well.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" is really good. I like it better than NIN.

Is this really the original version? It doesn't sound like I thought it did.

Not looking forward to Nirvana's cover of "The Man Who Sold the World". Extremely lame guitar solo in that one.

I'd've gone with Lulu's:

I like Johnny Cash's "Hurt" way better than the original.  Admittedly, NiN makes it sound awful on purpose (scratchy and distorted and altogether annoying, especially with headphones - it actually "Hurt"s to listen to it).

Finally caught up to this set, and like the "Pass the Baton" set he did earlier this week, it's an interesting concept for a set. But I just wish the covers he'd picked had been better. I did like the Ramones that he used for the Do You Wanna Dance cover, but I too was hoping for Mr. Dave, or maybe Bette Midler. And I was hoping he'd forgo all of Van Halen's many covers and instead use Jump as a starter, with the Aztec Camera version as its shadow. Oh well, maybe next time.
