'60s? late '70s? or (I say this every day) 2004?
ETA: 2001

TOTHK - Semisonic covering Macca's "Jet" - 2001

From the Macca tribute album...
-
TOTHK - Semisonic covering Macca's "Jet" - 2001
well, new to me, certainly.
-
They really need to replace that "2001" sounder -- it was damn near unintelligible. Too robotic for its own good.
-
The Strokes "Someday"

Can't say they're bringing anything new to this cover. It's pretty much note-for-note from the original version.
-
The Strokes "Someday"
don't think KFOG played this at the time either. Which is all to the good.

which is precisely why Renee is playing it, I suppose. ;)

I'm glad they went with a Strokes song other than the recurring theme "Last Night".

The Shins "New Slang"

First 3 tracks are bustouts! :o
-
The Shins "New Slang"
first one we've heard that qualifies as a KFOG staple. I've always kinda liked it, so no complaints from me yet.

I daresay Semisonic's Macca cover has never been played on the radio anywhere.
-
Jack Johnson "Flake"

NOOOOOOOOOOO!! WOS Jack Johnson, an uber-LN if ever there was -- KFOG plays this 20 times a week, it seems.
-
I love this JJ track, although I can't disagree about it being LN.

Jack Johnson "Flake"
I think you jinxed it.

BOS Monsters Inc.
WOS2 No Doubt.

I agree.
-
No Doubt "Underneath It All"
the Reggae Rap Break is one of the most unbearable of early-'00s cliches
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!2: uber-WOS3 Nickelcrap.
-
Nickelback "How You Remind Me"
-
Staind "It's Been Awhile"
Dare I ask: bustout?
-
Will Renee surprise us with a HAAAAAAAAAAAY moment today?
-
holy crap: segue-ing from Nickelback to Staind is unforgiveable. WOS4. This set started with great promise but jeezus this is horrid.
-
Will Renee surprise us with a HAAAAAAAAAAAY moment today?
we desperately need one at this point. Pink, perhaps?
-
Natalie Merchant "Just Can't Last"
Yet another bustout?
-
How about Shaggy - "It Wasn't Me"?
-
Staind "It's Been Awhile"
Dare I ask: bustout?
Apparently it is, -- I'd've sworn we heard it at least once before but it's not showing up in my search.
eeek: snoozeworthy Natalie Merchant.
-
How about Shaggy - "It Wasn't Me"?
the reggae rap on the No Doubt song was all the dancehall I can handle today.
-
I know it's been 12 years but 9/11 clips are still kind of unwelcome. "Mad World" indeed.
-
Good Morning America's 9/11 coverage into Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules "Mad World" (Tears For Fears cover)

kinda glad that's over.
-
wow, even Renee hates Staind! I feel so simpatico right now.

Who forced her to play it? ::)
Schizophrenic set, indeed

Schizophrenic set, indeed
and playing it right after Nickelback didn't help. "Blecch".
-
A remarkably frank and honest comment from RR on the Staind song: "Blleccchh!"
I couldn't agree more.
-
Renee: BOS Gary Jules

This week: 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001. I'm guessing we will not get 2011 tomorrow.
Yeah, it started great, then went to LNs, then to some awful songs*, then to a song I associate more with 2004.
*"How You Remind Me", while not spectacular, does not deserve the derision, IMHO

Maybe we'll get a 1961 set! :D

I'm wondering if we will get something for the 50th anniv of Beatles on Ed Sullivan next month.

It shouldn't be that hard... 2001 has been visited only a handful of times.

It shouldn't be, but with mid-90s sets and later it seems to be anyway. For instance, AL's 3rd 97 set had 7 repeats from her first two. ::)

and we can blame DC and BP for some of that, but generally there is a much smaller pool because most pop and soul hits are not in the mix, sadly -- unlike '60s/'70s/early-'80s when anything that charted appears to be fair game. (I notice this with The Peak's '90s sets too -- they'll never play Hanson in a '97 set, for example, and avoid rap altogether).

Good/Necessary
Semisonic: B/D (even though it’s the first time I’ve heard this on the radio, there was nothing special about it)
Strokes: B/B+
BRMC: A-/A
Shins: A-/A-
Jack Johnson: B/D
No Doubt: B/D
Nickelback: C/C
Staind: C/C (I really don’t get the extreme hate for the last two)
Natalie Merchant: B/C
Gary Jules: A/INC (it really belongs in a later year)
-
Gary Jules: A/INC (it really belongs in a later year)
I'm happy to slam RR for "wrong year"-itis, gawd knows this happens all the time, but the Donnie Darko sndtk is from late 2001, even if the song didn't chart until 2003.

you, me and most everybody. As I recall, some British DJ started playing it, it got released over there and became the "Chistmas #1" in 2003 and the rest of the world followed.
