I'll be elsewhere, so have fun kids. I'm gonna go way out on a limb and say it will be something pre-1990. ;)

At least the Janis wasn't "Bobby McGee"...

I guess I think of this as more '72 than '71 since I saw them at the '72 Winterland show do this stuff. Mick Taylor was awesome.

It's going to be hard to top this one for me. My favorite stones track.

Marvin Gaye "What's Going On"
"What's Going On" is not exactly rare, either, much as I adore this LP as a whole.

Holy fucking shit, is this really Howlin' Wolf on 10@10?!?!? I am gobsmacked. Who is programming this set? It can't be Renee.
-
True cigarettes commercial into Traffic "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone"

Hah! the drugfest continues! BOS Traffic, "Light Up or Leave Me Alone"

Whoever is programming today's set is doing a mighty fine job.

Agreed.
Traffic, BOS 2.
To be honest, I didn't particularly enjoy the Howlin' Wolf track, but I appreciate that it was played.

David Bowie "Life On Mars"
indeed, BOS from me -- check out Streisand's cover version sometime.
-
Marvin Gaye "What's Going On"
generally a BOS for me; we'll see...

David Bowie "Life On Mars"
Now I think of the TV show of the same name!
Great concert, but Winterland was more than half-empty for this one:
-
John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band "Power To The People"
holee crap! BOS John & Yoko!!

Man, what a triple bill! I'd have paid good money to see that. Except I was 12 at the time.
-
Don Pardo "another great one!" into T. Rex "Hot Love"
BOS T-Rex "Hot Love".

It was a great show; I remember all three acts. IIRC, Bowie was pissed at Bill Graham for years due to the terrible attendance at this show. This was during his most famous tour. Graham was busy that weekend running the 48 hour KSAN marathon of live concert recordings.
-
Tommy James "Draggin' The Line"
TJ drags his ass line. Mmmm... purple flowers...

Gotta chime in...
Big BOS Cat Stevens ... along with most other songs in this set. :)
-
Harold And Maude into Cat Stevens "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out"
BOS the Cat Man -- when he wants to sing out, he sings out!
-
Danged fine set.
-
Renee: BOS Cat Stevens; VHMs to John Lennon, Janis Joplin, and the Rolling Stones
-
wow, looks like I actually missed a good one! BOS John & Yoko, which is a serious rarity if not a bustout.
-
Howlin' Wolf "Wang-Dang-Doodle"
track info: "Wang-Dang-Doodle" (Willie Dixon) – 3:27 (recorded May 4, 1970)
Wolf – vocal; Carp – harmonica; Sumlin – rhythm guitar; Clapton – lead guitar; Stewart – piano; Wyman – bass; Watts – drums.

Howlin' Wolf "Wang-Dang-Doodle"
Hmmm, so Howlin' Wolf covering the Grateful Dead?
(No, I know it's the other way around...)
Anyway, that's today's bust-out. And it's not just a bust-out for the song, but also for the
artist. We also had rarities from Janis, Traffic, Bowie, John Lennon, and T. Rex. And it's hard to
complain about one of the best Stones jams or a great Marvin Gaye song. Yes, overall it's a pretty
good set. But as 1971 is the best year evah, a pretty good set is only slightly better than
average. The potential -- unrealized in recent years -- is for a 1971 show to be "knock your socks
off" fantastic.
Today's year gives me a chance to ponder what I think is one of 10@10's greatest omissions:
The New Riders of the Purple Sage. Their eponymous debut album has some wonderful gems;
just about anything from it would be a great contribution to a 1971 set. Between being a local
band, and their connections to the Grateful Dead, I would have thought that they'd be 10@10
regulars in the early '70s, despite their limited catalogue. But surprisingly, they've been no-shows
until Annalisa played one of my few requests: Panama Red. I think their earlier work holds
up better, and their absence on 10@10, and KFOG in general, puzzles me.

agreed -- I was a big fan back then and given that Dead connection you'd think they'd be played much more often.

Funny, I had forgotten we head this one twice in the past 3 years or so (Dave apparently ignored it for many years). But sure enuf we got it in a 2010 Lennon birthday set from AL and RR's 2012 Election day 10@10.

Yeah, I recently heard me some NRPS on Sirius/XM Deep Tracks from the first album, and it sounded really sweet. It's a well-recorded album, with some of Garcia's best pedal steel work.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Riders_of_the_Purple_Sage_(album)
I also think Panama Red is not as good as the stuff off the first album, or most of the second album either.

I thought for certain that Panama Red was the kind of song that would catch Fogheads' fancy
and predicted it would take BOS when I requested it. But when it aired, it sounded kind of "flat,"
although I still enjoy the lyrical wordplay. More puzzling than their general omission from 10@10
is that I've never heard them during regular programming, even when the playlist skewed
more toward older material.

I'm sure Fogheads would dig "Henry" if played right after the Friday 5:00 PM traditional song.
