we're ripe for '90s today. Or possibly early '80s.
But we're behind sked today... first, some Dead: "Friend of the Devil"
ETA: an end-of-summer thang.

Jeb Loy Nichols, "Heaven Right Here" -- for years I thought his first name was "Jebloy". Not that "Jeb Loy" is any better.

The name suggests he should be hanging with Toby Keith.

Which would have put the year at 1970. Better or worse than what we're in store for?

Had my hopes up for another 'classic rock year', but oh well... hope summer set turns out ok anyway.

U2: "Someone Somewhere in Summertime"
-
I'll give Simple Minds a BOS. Haven't heard this one in a looooong time.
-
U2: "Someone Somewhere in Summertime"
Humor or honest mistake?
-
Ha, I've seen this song id'd as Simple Minds, U2, and Echo & The Bunnymen. I believe the first is correct.
-
LN Mungo Jerry
-
U2: "Someone Somewhere in Summertime"
Humor or honest mistake?
indeed, it's Simple Minds, which is what it sounded like to me but when I Googled I got U2 up the wazoo.
ah, Kinks for the umpteenth time. uber-LN, much as I love them.

I feel obliged to point out that U2 up the wazoo is not my idea of a good time.
And love the Kinks, but this song is definitely unnecessary. Is Mungo Jerry really coming, or is that a joke a la U2?
-
LN Kinks -- way too overplayed on 10@10 IMHO...
-
As I said, LN Kinks

Ouch... thanks a lot for the visual image Dave. :-)

So, the Captain is not here, and nobody knows how to list a song for those of us that can't listen live?
;)
-
Ha, I've seen this song id'd as Simple Minds, U2, and Echo & The Bunnymen. I believe the first is correct.
The streamtheworld player showed the title as "Someone Somewhere in Sum." Well, a little unorthodox for a song title, but hey, I can swing with it.
HM Kinks even though this one gets wheeled out for numerous occasions. (Tax day, Summertime, End of Summertime, etc.)
(Geoff, it was Sunny Afternoon.)
-
uber-LN2 "Boys of Summer". Sheesh. Let's get off this extremely beaten path, Renee -- Mungo Jerry and Sly not far behind?
-
LN2 Don Henley, as much as it's an excellent song.

Overplayed though it may be, still a BOS from me. This is actually the ONLY Don Henley solo song that I really like...
-
What's the over/under on Chuck Prophet's Summertime Thang?

I thought we'd been pretty forthcoming so far.
Kinks "Sunny Afternoon"
Henley, "Boys of Summer"

Oy, don't even think that 8)

I always thought it was "Poison Summer". Wasn't sure what that meant. And I had a friend who thought a line was "your boobs keep shining in the sun". OK!
(At least this song talks about AFTER the Boys of Summer are gone.)
-
What's the over/under on Chuck Prophet's Summertime Thang?
overplayed, underwhelming?

So, is this it so far (per GS)
1. Heaven Right Here-Jeb Loy Nichols
2. Someone,Somewhere-Simple Minds
3. Sunny Afternoon-The Kinks
4. The Boys of Summer-Don Henley
-
What's the over/under on Chuck Prophet's Summertime Thang?
I'll give it a 65% chance.

BOS1 Green day, "Wake Me When Sept. Ends". I'm not tired of this one yet, tho' I suspect it will be in heavy rotay the next month.
-
Wake Me Up When This Setever Ends
-
What's the over/under on Chuck Prophet's Summertime Thang?
Oh crap, this Green Day is even worse.
For the record, it's Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day, which could have have a parenthetical title of (Wake Me Up When This Song Ends).
-
BOS Green Day.
Major sledgehammer -- my girlfriend had just dumped me, and this was on endlessly that summer. Longest. September. Ever.
-
Wake Me Up When This Setever Ends

-
Wake Me Up When This Setever Ends
good one.. :)
I agree with RGMike on this one, though. The only Green Day song I can think of that I don't mind hearing (but all I know is their radio hits).

BOS2 Janis/Big Brother "Summertime".

BOS2, Janis.

Mixed reviews for Green Day. What would its Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic score be?

I much rather have heard "Holiday".
-
Hey, here's a new one. Sounds like John Mayer.
ETA: "Wildfire" - John Mayer

the negativity surprised me, actually.
and here's the new John Mayer, "Wildfire".

Late to the party today: John Mayer "Wildfire"

he's channeling his inner Michael Franti on this.. no thanks

yeah, lyrically, not that great, but I still like his Allmans-y gee-tar.

But he's using an envelope filter a la Jerry Garcia.

having heard the Who's "Summertime Blues" 3 times over the weekend thanks to Classic Kasem... this is uber-LN for me today. Blue Cheer woulda been cool.

The Who's rendition of "Summertime Blues"

BOS The Who!

The Who's rendition of "Summertime Blues"
This is great. My favorite song when I was a sophomore in high school (1983) was the live version of Young Man Blues from the Kids Are Alright soundtrack.
-
It's Alright It's Ok, but I hear RGMike screaming: Florence & The Machine
-
mmmmm... s'mores...
WOS Florence/Machine "Dog Days are Over". I seriously do not understand the love -- I have no use for her whatsoever.
I mean, I hear people kvelling that they "love her voice" but it's just caterwauling to me.

Florence + The Machine "Dog Days Are Over"

I don't like her either. I switch it to something else when she comes on.

While I'm not surprised, I would say that technically, she has a very strong voice, and appeals on that level to some people.
-
Florence + The Machine "Dog Days Are Over"
Maybe she could fix this song if she had some Mechanics to fix her Machine.
-

I'm more with JF on this one, at least for this song.
-
Florence + The Machine "Dog Days Are Over"
I still think it would have been a better lyric if she'd sung "The dark days are over!"

as I said above, it's just caterwauling to me. And her lyrics are very pedestrian to my ears.
-
VHM the Grease clip -- I'd've much preferred "Summer Nights" to this Motels atrocity. WOS2.

Fully concur. Best would've been "Grease Megamix".

Yeah, that was a brutal segue. Such a tease. Though I like the Motels.
-
Grease into The Motels "Suddenly Last Summer"
-
well, that was underwhelming.
-
she announces "Janis!"
-

I'd have taken the Chuck Prophet over this in a heartbeat.
Oh, and I was fine with the Green Day. Heard it a lot when it was a hit, but not as much since then.
-
Renee: BOS Janis/Big Brother; VHM Green Day and The Motels

2013-08-30 - FRIDAY!! Summer's last hurrah - Today, we're saying goodbye to summer!
1. Jeb Loy Nichols - Heaven Right Here
2. Simple Minds - Someone Somewhere In Summertime
3. The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
(Movie: Meatballs - "Woody the Wabbit")
4. Don Henley - The Boys Of Summer
(TV: The Simpsons)
5. Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends (VHM)
6. Big Brother & The Holding Company (Janis Jopin vocals) - Summertime (BOS)
7. John Mayer - Wildfire
8. The Who - Summertime Blues
(Movie: The Sandlot - "S'mores")
9. Florence + The Machine - Dog Days Are Over
(Movie: Grease)
10. The Motels - Suddenly Last Summer (VHM)

A few cursory comments... some of these were NTM, but I'm in no mental state to explore
new material. I like the Kinks, the Don Henley song, and the Motels... Summertime is perhaps
my favorite Janis song, and in a better state of mind it would really set me vibrating, if you know
what I mean. I like Flo and her machine, but that song is overexposed, even for me, and that's
saying something. Her appearence on Austin City Limits was entertaining in an eccentric way.
Overall, I liked hearing Friend of the Devil beforehand more, as it seemed to fit my
situation/mood better.
I thought it was the first theme 10@10 that we've had in quite a while, but I see there was
the Outside Lands commercial on the 9th. Prior to that it was 4th of July set.

Funny to think he's only had four solo albums (plus a greatest hits effort and a couple of other guest appearances). While there are occasions when I could do without his slower material, I can't think of a Henley song that I don't like.

My wife calls him "the whiner," but I think he's certainly put out some classics. When I hear the "The Heart of the Matter" 12-string intro, I almost get chills of anticipation. Great song.

I've often said that had he never been an Eagle, just "Boys of Summer" and "End of the Innocence" would have cemented his greatness. I don't think you can say the same about any of Frey's solo work.
