RR's clue: "Marcus Welby MD and the Flip Wilson Show"
1970 again, after we just had a 1970 classic. WTF? great year regardless, but... continuity person?
-
TOTHK Mountain "Mississippi Queen" 1970
-
Elton John "Burn Down The Mission"
This was in the classic set from Friday...
-
TOTHK Mountain "Mississippi Queen" 1970
Early BOS, but not my final answer.
-
OK, we heard "Burn Down the Mission" on Friday's classic Seriously, does anybody pay attention over there? to anything?

yeah, but it's a great choice to repeat.

True, but still...

Temptations "Ball Of Confusion"
-
My balls are in confusion.
-
My balls are in confusion.
I hate when that happens...
VHM, Temps
-
Traffic "Glad"
-
VHM Traffic, oh how I played this LP to death that year.
-
Traffic "Glad"
Big BOS from me
-
Traffic "Glad"
Cool song, but I'm pretty sure it was in the last '70 set...
-
Hot Tuna "Water Song"
-
An instrumental twin-spin! I love "Water Song", Overexposed tho' it may be. VHM.

Sorry, that position was eliminated due to budget constraints.

Pretty = VHM.

That could be a punch-line for a fine prostitution joke...
-
The repeat of EJ notwithstanding, this set is shaping up nicely. The clips are really well done, nice segues. Could use a surpirse, forgotten nugget or three, though.
-
Women's liberation / Equal Rights Amendment into Diana Ross "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
-
Miss Ross, she da boss. Short version, sadly.
-
I'm your Katrina, I'm your Katrina...
Still a great song, so I'm okay with it.
-
yet another song I've recently referenced in my novel. Meaning Renee has the same taste in music as a 15-year-old boy. VHM GFR.
-
Grand Funk Railroad "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home"
-
I'm your Katrina, I'm your Katrina...
Still a great song, so I'm okay with it.
I always think I hear Ray & Dave Davies of the Kinks singing backup on this "I'm your captain!"
-
Canned Heat "Let's Work Together"
-
Canned Heat "Let's Work Together"
I've always preferred the Wilbert Harrison version (also 1970) but at least Kermit isn't singing lead here.

LOL..! I dig Bryan Ferry's cover. It's really warbly.

BOS McGuinness Flynt!! This may be a KFOG bustout (tho' i can't swear Dave never played it; it sounds up his alley). I've heard it on the Peak a few times.
-
Oscars into McGuinness Flint "When I'm Dead And Gone"
-
Sly's lookin' at the gavel. or the devil. or sumthin'. VHM -- also a Katrina but I do love it.
-
Sly & The Family Stone "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)"
-
Renee sez Phillip Phillips (!) puts Sly & The Family Stone over the top for BOS; VHM 2-way tie to GFR and Mountain.

Another case of tune #10 winning the BOS vote. I swear this is rigged.

McGuinness Flynt didn't have a prayer.

1. Mississippi Queen-Mountain
2. Burn Down the Mission-Elton John
(News: Kent State shootings)
3. Ball of Confusion-The Temptations
4. Glad-Traffic
5. Water Song-Hot Tuna
(News: Women's Lib)
6. AIn't No Mountain High Enough-Diana Ross

I'm gonna assume tomorrow will be a '90s day, which would make this our first 5-decade week since the AL era, methinks.

Perhaps with a super-strong year like 1970 it's almost impossible to fuck it up. But with the
usual haphazard effort, a potentially excellent set can be avoided and an largly ordinary,
slightly better-than-average one supplied instead. Which is what we got today.
In principle, I don't object to repeating 1970 within a week's time, or even 1993, for that matter.
A truly random "big wheel" would produce such a result occasionally. But to do so would require,
at bare minimum, not repeating songs. It just looks like shoddy work when that happens.
I liked last Friday's 1970 set much better. Although most of today's songs were great, their
impact was diminished by their overexposure. More than anything, they hinted at the better
choices that could have been.
1. Mississippi Queen-Mountain
Completely LN. Sadly, the only Mountain song that ever gets played today. How about
Theme For An Imaginary Western, to pick but one great alternative. Yet another band
that I'd like to hear more of on 10@10.
2. Burn Down the Mission-Elton John
A great song, yes, but not only did it just appear last Friday on 10@10, I think it's been getting
more play recently in general. Or maybe I just imagined I've heard it... But it's EJ, for goodness
sake, so there's a plethora of tracks to chose from... how about Amoreena?
3. Ball of Confusion-The Temptations
Another frequent flyer.
4. Glad-Traffic
Yet another KFOG FF.
5. Water Song-Hot Tuna
Wow, did no one catch this? It's from Burgers, released in 1972! (And still another KFOG FF.)
6. Ain't No Mountain High Enough-Diana Ross
An acceptable choice. Not a bust-out, but not a FF either.
7. Closer to Home-Grand Funk Railroad
Another song that seems to have slipped into occasional play in recent months. It appeared
on 10@10 in mid-March. This is the kind of song that is too easily over-played.
8. Let's Work Together-Canned Heat
Still yet another frequent flyer again.
9.When I'm Dead and Gone-McGuiness Flint
A rarity, and NTM, although it didn't make much of an impression on me.
10. Thank You (falettinme be mice elf agin)- Sly and the Family Stone
Somewhere between the sixth and eighth FF, depending on how strict one scores.

Your analysis was spot-on. Certainly not an unpleasant set but... unfulfilled potential, for sure.

I echo the sentiment of Big Fingers McGee about the recent 2000 encore, where he opined that
the set was less than the sum of its parts. Given that it's 1970, the parts are great and that sum
is still above average. But it seemed unconnected.
His observation seems to apply to many 10@10's lately... to be sure, there is an element of
chance in creating a good 10@10. But there is more to it than just picking ten songs from that
year and looking for clever seques from the clips.

So song #10 wins BOS three days in a row. Hmmm...
