Instead of "spot the vinyl" we'll play "spot the artists who are currently missing"

Love Dave's blog comments -- he's fired up!  Ironically, this makes up for his not doing a Mardi Gras set this year.

Dave had asked for suggestions for today's set. Here's the list I sent him last night:

Randy Newman-Louisiana 1927 (I heard this song in a bar the first night I ever spent in the Big Easy, and it has always carried strong memories ever since. Now more than ever.)

Louis Armstrong-When the Saints Go Marching In
Professor Longhair-Tipitina or Mardi Gras in New Orleans
Allen Toussaint-Southern Nights or What Do You Want the Girl to Do
Wild Tchoupitoulas-Big Chief
Wild Magnolias-Meet de Boys on de Battlefront
Neville Brothers-Fire on the Bayou
The Meters-Cissy Strut or They All Ask’d for You (a nice mention of the Audubon Zoo in this one)
Tom Waits-I Wish I Was In New Orleans
Robbie Robertson-Night Parade or Go Back to Your Woods (or take your pick from the Storyville album)
Huey Piano Smith-Don’t You Just Know It
Ernie K-Doe-Mother in Law
Dr. John-Goin’ Back to New Orleans
Fats Domino-I’m Walkin’

a FINE list, urth -- haven't heard "Meet de Boys on de Battlefront" in ages.

"you can have my husband but please don't mess with my man!"  I wanna say this is Marcia Ball? but I'm not sure.

Why thank you. Best I could do on short notice.

I think it was Irma thomas, who did the first version of Time is on My Side.

I hadn't heard--that's GREAT news.   :D  :D  :D

This may be a short set--I think we're up to super hit 6 already, and it's barely quarter past 10.

I'm betting he closes with your Randy Newman suggestion.

Either that or the Tom Waits tune would be fine by me.

It all sounds great. I woke up this morning with Iko Iko playing in my mind. I have fond N'awlins memories. Running wild in the streets, drink in hand at all times.

BOS for Hey Pocky Way!  I've loved this tune ever since I heard The Grateful Dead play it at Frost at Stanford.  That's actually what got me interested in the Neville Brothers, who are really great.

The Dead provided my first big exposure to the New Orleans sound with their annual Mardi Gras shows in the 80s, when they had the Nevilles, Dr. John and others I can't recall now (go figure!) open for them, and and stage a big Mardi Gras parade thru the crowd to open the second set.

The shows they did with the Nevilles in 86 are still some of the best live music I've ever seen.

Wha?

Bonus track doesn't get played until 11:00 or thereabouts. But if you mean the song between Coldplay & Sting, it was Amos Lee.
