Title: 30 Jan 2013: it's... 1994
Post by: RGMike on January 30, 2013, 07:42:08 AM
assuming we're getting a Super Bowl set Friday (and y'know what happens when you assume)... today could be either '60s or '90s.

I'd guess the latter, but that's just me.

ETA: Just heard the clue: the year Tonya Harding was in the Olympics and baseball went on strike--gotta be '94.

Clues: Tonya Harding stripped of her title, and baseball goes on strike. 1994?

I would feel confident saying 94 is correct. Of course, given that it's Renee, it'll probably be 1995 (baseball was still on strike at the year's beginning, and I don't know/care when Tonya was actually stripped of her title).

Songs I’d love to hear for a 1994 set, but probably won’t:

“One Love”, White Dove (or is it the other way around?)
“March Of The Pigs”, Nine Inch Nails
“Every Day Of The Week”, Jade
“Right Beside You”, Sophie B Hawkins
“This Time”, Janet Jackson
“100% Pure Love”, Crystal Waters
“Meet The Flintstones”, B©52’s
“Cleopatra’s Cat”, Spin Doctors
“Am I Wrong”, Love Spit Love
“Shhhhh….”, Jane Child

My wishlist:
Real McCoy - Another Night
Weird Al - Headline News (For how many times they play the Tonya Harding clip, they HAVE to play this!)

Seems like all I do is bitch lately, but DMB is a really lousy way to start.

The Clapton is at least a rarely heard version of the song, so points for that.  A couple.

I'll give a BOS for Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun". There has to be an invisible sun.

I'm LN'ing Black Hole Sun.

I'm going to start requesting some necessary 94 tracks on KFOG Radio's page. :P

I think "Black Hole Sun" was played the last time Renee visited '94.

Actually, she played it in her first visit.

This is the second 1994 Paula Cole snoozy rarity we've gotten in the RR era.

Edit: Seal before this actually made a pretty good segue.

Not a rarity, but I did enjoy hearing BHS. Ditto for Love Spreads, right up until the stream died.

Live "I Alone"

Eeek. one from my jukebox-from-hell, certainly. A godawful band IMHO. One of the original Pearl Jam imitators, tho' worse ones (Creed, et al) were yet to come.

I don’t get that. Yes, Live essentially rode the coattails of the Pearl Jam/Nirvana musical ‘revolution’, but I think their sound to be distinct and enjoyable. For Creed, you do have a point (although it seems as if Nirvana was the one most imitated, by Bush and Puddle Of Mudd in particular).

to my ears, virtually every awful band of the last 20 years has a lead singer trying very hard to be Eddie V.  Nickelback is another prime example.

I like Live, too -- at least the few songs I hear on the radio.   But I get that they're derivative.

Good/necessary:

1. B/F
2. F/F (don't care if it's the unplugged or whatever, don't like it)
3. C/C
4. A-/C (sure, it's been played a lot, but it definitely screams 94)
5. A-/B (see #4, just not played as often)
6. C/D
7. A/A
8. C/F
9. C/C
10. B+/B

Pearl Jam.  Now there's a band where all of its imitators (godawful as they were) have somehow managed to be far less irritating than the original.  ;D
