Title: 3 Oct 2012: it's... 1978
Post by: RGMike on October 03, 2012, 09:31:46 AM
didn't see any "inside info" on FB. I'm predicting '70s, with '90s tomorrow and '80s again Friday. I have a feeling "theme sets" will be at a premium for a while.

well, it seems the sets have been starting closer to 10:00 than they had been recently.

'78 starts with WOS1: Disco Dead. "Shakedown Street"

I like Disco Dead. Looking forward to the rest of 78.

note: we've gone '68... '88....'78 -- will tomorrow be '98?

Sgt Pepper: one of the worst movies ever.  EWF: the most-played song from that sndtk.

Whoa, awesome Sgt Pepper clip from George Burns. Gawd that was an awful movie. Nice segue into EWF covering the Bea'les.

Funny news item about Keef, especially the part about having to do a concert for the blind. I guess that's a good idea since they wouldn't be frightened by his alarming countenance.

Fool if you think the cheeze is over! I'll give a BOS for Chris Rea.

And I know Dreadlock Holiday is unpopular, but I like it. VHM.

Suspect that is our token rarity for the day. Still, it shows *someone* is making an effort.

I too noted that they've returned to the convention of selecting years for the week's sets based on the numeral that they end with. This was common when AL was more directly under DC's thumb, but let up in recent months. Now that AL is gone and DC is calling the shots (we assume) that custom has been reinstituted.

Cow orkers in my office! At least I heard the second half of "Who Are You". BOS.

The Peak, which did a STELLAR 1978 set today, also played "DH" -- my only carp about that set. And The Drive plays it in every third '78 set they do for some reason (when they're not playing "Thunder Island").

I was interrupted during "Rock Lobster" -- kudos on the Chris Rea. Was it the orig version or one of those remakes he did over the years?

Grateful Dead - "Shakedown Street"
Earth Wind and Fire - "Got to Get You Into My Life"
B-52's - "Rock Lobster"
Rolling Stones - "Shattered"
Peter Tosh (wtih Mick Jagger) - "(You Gotta Walk) Don't Look Back"
Cars - "Just What I Needed"
Chris Rea - "Fool (If You Think It's Over)
10 cc - "Dreadlock Holiday"
ABBA - "Take A Chance on Me"
Who - "Who Are You?"

I was interrupted during the B-52s and had to do actual WORK at work (how dare they?) but that looks like a decent set on paper.

Good/Necessary:
1 B/B
2 B+/C
3 A-/D-
4 B/D
5 B/B
6 D/F
7 B+/A-
8 B/B
9 B/B
10 C/C

Hmmm.. not as bad as I thought it would be, but the Cars kind of made the set sag in the middle.

is the debate over at 7? if so we need to get CC to crank up the Peak's '78 set on the replay.

Listening to the replay -- was also curious about the B-52s tune -- the indie single came out in '78; the (longer and different) LP version on Warner Bros came a year later. This appears to be the '79 version. ooops.

But wow, she played the orig version of the Chris Rea song -- impressive!

Ooh...thanks for bringing back Good/Necessary!  ;D

My ratings:
1 D/C
2 B/B+
3 B/F (Would be a D, but playing the wrong version in the wrong year bumps it down a grade.)
4 A-/C- (Maybe a little more LN than I give it credit for, but it did sound pretty good on 10@10.)
5 F/C
6 B/F
7 B-/A (DC LOVES Chris Rea.  I'm sure this was his doing...and probably most of the others.)
8 F/F
9 B/B
10 D/C

If DC loves Rea, maybe we'll finally hear "On The Beach" for a 1989 set. Which would obviously be good.
