Post by: mshray on August 10, 2005, 09:55:44 AM
Not sure of the year yet, but if you're not tuned in already, hurry up.  Dave went to commercial at 9:51 & said "Ten@Ten is next."

So unless he plans to play 8 minutes of ads, were in for a very early start.

well, '88 is close enough to bad for me. T.Heads is a nice start, tho'. May not get much better, actually.

Not a bad start tho--T. Heads' Mr. Jones. One of the better swan-song albums out there. Except that, at least this song, is more indicative of the direction Byrne was heading (Latin music) than a continuation what the Heads had been doing up to that point.

That said, it rocks.

Just imagine how good this album would have been if it included the 2 songs recorded in these sessions, but which didn't appear until later on the retrospective Sand In The Vaseline: "Sax & Violins" and "Lifetime Piling Up".

The former is probably my favorite TH song all-time.

what I'd love:

Prince, Alphabet St.
MJ, Another Part of Me
TTD, If You Let Me Stay (but betcha we get Wishing Well)
Bobby Brown, Don't Be Cruel (but betcha we get the Cheap Trick cover of the same name)
Joan Jett, I Hate Myself For Lovin' You
Lita Ford, Kiss Me Deadly
Kylie Minogue, I Should Be So Lucky

I'm not saying that "Let It Roll" is a great song, but of all the attempts that have been made by bands to carry on after their acknowledged leader has departed (& especially if said leader has left this mortal coil), this is amongst the most OK.

Any nominees for most egregious &/or most appealing in this category?  This promises to be a fairly forgetable set otherwise.

HM "Rain in the Summertime". A song that has more meaning if you've actually lived where it gets hot and then rains in the summertime.

I've always had issues with Ms Chapman.  I think "Fast Car" is a great song. But virtually everything else in her ouvre is painfully sincere and mediocre IMHO. I think crits went apeshit because she was a young, college-educated black woman who WASN'T doing R&B, and immediately pegged her as the second coming of Joan Armitrading (who was still recording and therefore didn't need someone else to be her second coming). End of rant for now (we'll deal with her sexuality another time).

That was quite possibly the single greatest achievement by a political staffer in history.  The back story is that one of Benson's people had pretended to be a Republican & had gone to a few Quayle fundraisers before the debate, where the staffer heard him make this comparison. While it is factually true*, a friendly audience, who in their private wet dreams hoped Quayle could be the next JFK, & wouldn't see the utter disconnect inherent in the idea.  So the staffer tipped Benson that Quayle had been going around comparing hisself to JFK, and the rest is history.

*Hillary will also be in exactly the same position in 3 yrs as both Qualye & JFK, i.e. having completed the 2nd year of her 2nd Senate term.  Only diff. being that both DQ & JFK had at least one House term under their belts before the Senate.

ETA:  I was going to agree with the other sentiment tho', Quayle would be an experienced voice of reason in Shrubs cabinet.

This was a very solid album, but the PF's suffer from a syndrome with me:  the I-love-one-of-your-songs-SO-much, how-come-you've-never-done-anything-else-like-it syndrome.

I could probably populate an entire 10@10 with this theme.

I don't know what I'm talking about, that's the point!

Everytime I go to Starbucks (not all that often, usually if one is inside a Safeway), I mostly get a double Americano (whichever vocab word they use for that), and the attendant always asks me, "Do you want room?"  At least it sounds like 'room', but that patently makes no sense at all, so I guess they must spell it 'reum'.  Or maybe 'rheum'.  But that sounds like a disease, right?

LOL to infinity! Aw, dude. You poor guy. They ARE saying "room". As in "do you want room for cream?"

This Starbucks you go to might want to instruct the staff to be a wee more specific next time.

There's a woman by BART in the morning giving away SF Examiners and her accent makes "free Examiner" sound like "freak seminaire".

Ha Ha!!  I love it when the joke is on me!  I haven't asked for cream since 1982, so I lack the concept.  Me & my active imagination supposed that this was some sort of non-alcoholic additive that would make it taste like brandy/rum in your coffee.  Ha!

I'd say Ann and Nancy Wilson, but it doesn't really look like them.

That rum/rheum/room thing is a scream.

I'm on the phone & I got ring, but Annalisa's not picking up.  Presumably caller #1 had the answer.

Okay, so I didn't win, but I talked to Annalisa at length about Bentsen/Quayle (got the spelling right that time) & the US election process.

So I'm on some kind of roll lately.  Yesterday I talked to Dave, & got played back on the air, today I've talked to Dave twice, the first time got played back on the air, to Greg Kihn once, also got played back, and now to Annalisa, but not played back.

Can you tell I hate my job & don't really put any effort into it these days?  Is it that obvious?

Dude, at this point you should just podcast your own show!

I heard one of your appearences today- you were trying to stump that website-thingy. And Annalisa told you to explore the full range of James' canon.

That was me, but it wasn't Annalisa, it was Renee.  I'm gonna ask her about that on Friday.

D'oh! Of course. As my Grandma used to say: "that's what I mean..."

(I know that's not a particularly colorful old-ladyism. But, it wa the WAY she said it...)

even tho' I own their debut (on vinyl) I'd've never recognized 'em.  What a wonderful album. It's the LP the Bangles should've followed up Different Light with, instead of writing dreadful power ballads.

You're not off the chain -- but you're Off da hook, baby!

FYI the Bill Murray movie is expanding this week -- in addition to Embarcadero it'll be at the Empire in West Portal, where the dinner choices are much yummier.
