Title: 21 Feb 2012: it's... 1989
Post by: RGMike on February 20, 2012, 06:48:46 PM
AL's back and she's bringing John Cusack with her.  Any Whitney Houston songs chart that year?

ETA: her duet with Ree-Ree was in '89, actually.

AL's in a YT-clip frenzy on FB: Petty, the 'mats (both of which would get LNs from me if played tomorrow) and the Dead Milkmen with "Punk Rock Girl", which would be most welcome.

And Phil Collins, and the artist whose two number ones put me to sleep, Simply Red. Oh, and also one of Bon Jovi's least tolerable efforts.

"Batdance" makes a up a couple of points, but it's not enough.

Unnecessary Repetition Alert: Werbster played FYC's "Good Thing" at 6:15, therefore...   (seriously, if AL plays it it will prove these things have been happening on purpose)

me, I'll be in a meeting, so take detailed notes as always, kiddies!

Will you still be lurking online, and just not able to listen? Or will you have one of those old single
ear pieces going from your Zenith transistor radio to your ear?

In either case, we shall gird our loins and conjure our snark powers in your stead.

Nice start with the Neville Bros.

Is anyone else having problems changing their profile picture here? I haven't been able to do so for a couple of weeks.

No luck here. Oh well, Thunder Soul isn't a bad movie to be stuck on. I've seen it three times already.

it's funny, I watched it on Pay-Per-View Friday night, unaware that it was showing at the Castro at the same time! Wonderful stuff.

LN2 and WOS1: SRV's blooze I could looze.

LN3: Smithereens.

Rickie Lee Jones? VHMFRA -- not sure if this is a bustout. Can anyone tell me if this got SF airplay in  '89? Sure didn't hear it in NY.  Trying to figure out if this is a DC-approved "trigger" song or not.

Apart from Ricki Lee, it doesn't appear as if I'm missing anything.

BOS Chris Isaak, one of the most overplayed songs that I never tire of.

too bad AL let the howl from that movie clip sully the opening notes of the song.

Is this the cost of a uber-BOS? About six LNs?

it's not '89 without Cure/FYC/REM/INXS (or some combination thereof).

BOS2 "Woman in Chains" just for not being "Sowing the seeds" for the billionth time. Proxy of Gaz for this and the N Cherry.

so it seems the RLJ was a bustout too, and the TFF was a relative rarity.  The other 7 were all FFs and/or LNs, it would seem.

The Neneh Cherry sounded like a different mix to me, less "scratch-centric" if you will, than the version heard on most Top 40 stations in '89. I still have the 45.  So next time, who knows? "Walk the Dinosaur" may finally make it. I'll substitute Ms Cherry's "Kisses on the Wind" for BS next time too.

 4. The Smithereens - A Girl Like You

ix-nay on da cray-cray! But agreed: 2 bustouts and a coupla rarities don't entirely make up for 6 LNs
