I still can't figure out what it is about Dickie Betts that works for me in a jam band that does not work for me with Jerry Garcia. It's just personal taste, I guess. Or maybe I never saw Jerry under the proper influences.

Personal taste is all that matters. Betts was clearly influenced by Garcia, but his strongest talent in ABB was his compositional approach. When you spend time studying the classic performances, when Duane was still alive, Dickey was the one who did the complex endings, and wrote the really sweet melodic songs like Elizabeth Reed and Blue Sky etc.
