Title: 17 Jan 2012: it's...1985
Post by: RGMike on January 16, 2012, 09:19:46 PM
No clues as of 9:15pm Monday.

But it's '85, making it's every-3-weeks appearance. I'd like to hide-ee-hide, all right.

Turned on the radio to hear SRV. Was hoping it would be '89 to see whether your promised request will be played, RGMike.

Dang, apartheid clip => TFF 'trina. I was hoping for "I ain't gonna play Sun City."

indeed, TFF get least-necessary 1, which offically gets its own abbreviation henceforth -- LN1.  Tho' there are FB Fogheads gushing "best song evah" and such.

and it wouldn't be an '80s set without INXS.  we're kissing the dirt, alright.

And here's the requisite INXS song of the day. Not the worst choice of their canon, but still falling squarely in the "Least Necessary" category.

someone on FB just praised this as a "deep track". He was not being ironic.

VHM New Order but jeezus this is a DC wet dream.  I was hoping since AL didn't solicit requests that maybe she would catch up on her backlog. No such luck.

This is one of my fave SRV songs.   He breaks out of the 12 bar blues snooze routine on this one, at least, and constructs an actual song.  I would think other acts could cover this one.

Speaking of 12 bar blues, New Order sticks close to the map here.

BOS Cybill and Bruce.

If you love someone, set them free. If you want to bore someone, buy them a Sting CD.

Which song was it?

Nice Bruce Willis rant.

But now we got Sting going all ungrammatical on us. That's always bothered me.

Change It.

Despite the obligatory DC=INXS=REM, at least the two songs chosen weren't complete Katrinas.  In fact, they're sorta NTM, I must say.  (I don't have much REM in my collection and I have no INXS at all.)

Indeed. I don't recognize this song. Not only that, Peter Buck has got a distinctly different guitar sound than what we usually hear from him.

Pat Healy informs us on FB that it wasn't R.E.M., but Golden Palominos (with Michael Stipe on vocals).

BOS, TFF.

Since this is pretty much the only place I hear TFF, I don't mind that it's a 'trina (as opposed to Oingo Boingo, which I have on my "iMedia").

Far and away my favorite show of the period.  Great cast, great writing (at least early in the series -- like most great series, it kind of lost it's way in the late period).

Ahhhhh, that would explain why it doesn't sound like Peter Buck. Wikipedia says some of the lead guitar was done by Richard Thompson, and it certainly did sound like him.

I saw Golden Palominos twice back in the day.  I'm pretty sure I was at this show:

Read through this thread and looked at the tunegenie.

<sigh>; so uninspired; half the set was LN's; is KFOG trying to be the Drive or the Sound?

Love Vigilantes is a terrific song and BOS-worthy but was played within the last six months or so, I think.

yes, and we've heard it 4 times in the AL era. Not the technical definition of a katrina, I guess (esp since 1985 comes up so damn often) but still...

With apologies to radical:

Track  Quality   Necessary
1           C                D
2           D-               D
3           B                 F
4           B                 D
5           B                 C

8           B                  B
9           B                 F
10         B                 B

For me it's a hard year to go wrong, but I'd agree that it was severely lacking in "hey" moments.

Lol.  Once we got past #1 and #2 this set was pleasantly new-wave, if a bit unexciting.

The INXS song wasn't particularly common...but not particularly interesting either.

I would have liked Mr. Mister. (Broken Wings, not Kyrie.)

OMG!! AL WAS TRYING TO TELL US SOMETHING (SORRY TO GO ALL KRASOWSKI ON Y'ALL, BUT THIS IS BIG).

IF YOU LOVE SOMEBODY SET THEM FREE WASN'T JUST SOME CORPORATE RADIO FODDER FOISTED UPON OUR RADIO HOSTESS, IT WAS A SECRET MESSAGE, A CRY FOR HELP, A MIDDLE FINGER TO THE MAN! IF ONLY SHE COULD HAVE CHANGED "THEM" IN THE TITLE TO "HER," IT WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT (AND TAKEN CARE OF THE GRAMMAR ERROR NOTED ABOVE).

VIVE LA RÉSISTANCE, FRÈRES ET SOEURS!
