Title: 13 Jan 2012: it's... 1974!
Post by: RGMike on January 12, 2012, 09:15:22 PM
The good news: a rare week with a '60s AND a '70s set.

The bad news: we're ignoring Friday the 13th altogether.

Please let this not be another 103.7-fest...

Speaking of, SRW and DW are working my LAST nerve tonight. "Killler Queen"? "Bennie & the Jets"?? Jeezus. (bet we hear BOTH of those)

Is this the first week since the changeover that we've had three pre-1985 sets?

AL went manic with the deep cut videos last night. I don't think that's a good sign for the imminent set.

Ha!  I liked that little exchange.  You could tell her laugh wasn't forced.  And what Webster was saying -- how he used to put his Radio Shack cassette (pronounced "CASS-ette") recorder up to the TV to record shows -- rang true for me, too.  In his case he recalls recording California Jam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Jam).  In my case, although a few years later, I would be a devotee of recording SNL episodes.

Hahaha! I did that too! I started in 76 or so. I remember seeing the Blues Brothers come on, and my mom said "Belushi is getting fatter and fatter." My dad didn't hear her the first time so she said it again! Wish I knew where that tape was...

I avoid KFOG at all times now except AL's show. KISS 98.1 usually good and I must be entering old fogeydom tuning in a lot to 70's on 7 on Sirius XM. A decent dose of alt to on 105 and alt on XM too.

Webster just made AL giggle. Of course, that's not hard to do.

Wish I knew where that tape was...

gosh, me, too.  I got into it during the 77-78 season, I think.  I could recite some of the sketches word for word.  I wonder where those Lo-Noise cassettes went...

Okay, NOW we're talking!  Uber-BOS to the song after the 6 million dollar man clip.  I know what it is, but am not spoiling for the streamers.

Hint:  One of the great guitar intros of all time.

I dunno... "Joanna" and "Jump" were both big when I was 13, so it's possible they're targeting me.

Well, that answers my question. Thanks. :) I was 7, and definitely fall in that target group. But can there really be enough people to finance a concert?

I'm guessing that most VH fans would at least tolerate Kool, as long as, as was previously mentioned, "Cherish" is avoided.

I can't bring that tune to mind. It must be awful. :)

I'll let you Google it, but I refuse to provide a link.

one of the worst lyrics ever:  "Cherish the love we have.."

makes me cringe every time.

BitchOS
Does Paul Anka make ya cringe too?

no, but why do you ask?  In fact, I think he's pretty cool, (mostly based on an interview I heard him do on Howard Stern a few years back.)   Please don't tell me he covered Cherish...!

Live Lou is another too-frequent-flier (esp in the Morey era), good as it is. VHM.

it's certainly making this set a long one if not a great one.

Well, it's not as if AL can get away with playing "Heroin."

Sort of a TANC: my former Voice colleague Chuck Eddy just wrote a package of the 50 worst cover songs ever, and the Cowboy Junkies' slowdown of "Sweet Jane" made the cut.  Read on: http://www.complex.com/music/2012/01/the-50-worst-cover-songs-of-all-time/

excellent

"Lou Reed allegedly once called this 'the best and most authentic version I have ever heard,' but why the heck would you trust him? It is only authentic if you think the Velvet Underground were a middle-of-the-road chamber-folk lounge-snooze group instead of a noisy droning rock band (which is what lots of musicians they inspired apparently believe, but that doesn't make them right), and also if you enjoy hearing clinically introverted Canadians who forgot to take their depression medication mumble so you can't make out the words."

AB has confirmed that AL is indeed on fire. At least he's gotten away from liking his own posts.

He's growing on me.
