Title: 3 Jan 2012: it's... 1988
Post by: RGMike on January 02, 2012, 06:30:05 PM
and I've already had to -1 the Wilburys. Sheesh.

But what I really hate is when you post a request and 3 mins later someone else requests a far-more-overexposed song by the same artist.

I think you are quite correct about the Wilburys, even if I wouldn't mind hearing them amidst most 80's dreck, but I think your criticism of the Living Colour tracks is unwarranted.  Glamour Boys is totally lightweight compared to Cult of Personality, and the rareness index cannot overcome its shortcomings.  JMTC

But "Glamour Boys" Is a very GAY lyric, even tho' Corey Glover wasn't officially out at the time.

Good is an understatement. THAT would be a hell of a cut for her to play from Vivid. Maybe that's where I saw you before -- at East Coast rock n roll shows in the late 80's.

You're right.  It's better than merely "good!".

I've only been to CBGB's a couple of times... Living Colour was def the biggest name I saw there.

he a BIG o'l queen, honey.  I saw him at some event that ABC sent me to back in '89 or so; the lyrics of "Glamour Boys" had piqued my interest and when I saw him in person I put 2 + 2 together.  He's been touring as Judas in "JC Superstar" of late.

Corey's either bi, living a lie, or your gaydar went awry:

And Vernon Reid is the lyricist for Living Colour.

No surprise: "Cult Of Personality" rather than "Glamour Boys". So far only the Etta James qualifies as a non-Katrina.

VHM Hornsby when he was still fresh-sounding.

BOS to Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons, the movie which revealed the enormity of Uma Thurman's talents.

HM to Vernon Reid's buzz saw guitar in "Cult Of Personality" (a.k.a.  "Corey Glover very might well be a gay.")

tee hee

VHM "Promise". Overplayed on other stations but more rare here.

I'm hearing mostly Katrinas and hoping the streak of good shows a few weeks ago was not a fluke.

VHM "Only a Katrina"... still a good song.

Not happy with this set. Too many obvious and overplayed songs. The few rareties weren't surprising enough to offset the creeping malaise.

re: Dangerous Liaisons.  I took an intertexuaity class at SF State where we we watched this American movie and read the original French novel (translated).  We might have read the English play, too... I forget.  We did similar things w the Don Juan story (read a text, studied the Don Giovanni opera film directed by Josesh Losey) and Carmen.

what a great freaking class that was.

no hate for Jane, from me.   if you have to play just two chords on a guitar, this ain't bad.

apparently I was on the phone or something, 'cause I missed it. '88 would indicate solo Morrissey, I'm guessing.

I was happy surfing the Katrina Wave until AL picked Jane Says from Nothing's Shocking. Biggest 'Trina-related buzzkill for me since she played the Faces' Stay with Me (maybe not a Katrina, but the only one of their songs that ever gets airplay) over Bad 'n' Ruin on 9/30/11.

BOS Bruce.  VHM When in Rome.  They're still touring.  I saw them a few years ago.  But they weren't very good.  They said (a few years ago) they were working on a new album.  I haven't yet heard anything about it.  I bought their old album at the Tower Records going out of business sale for 50 cents on the last day.  It's not very good.
