He even has a clip of Alex Trbek doing the CBC News from 1965, when he would have been 25 yrs old.

Mshray & Alicat, can you guys give backup doing the archival thing? (winkwink) My whole recording setup (and in fact, the entire den) is deconstructed while we have some work done. I'll try to piece together something to get it done, but no guarantees.

Noticed yesterday that the years in this week's sets had been separated in 10-year increments (Mon 81, Tue 91, Wed 75, Thur 85) but figured there was little or no chance of getting 65 today. When will I learn to pay more attention to stuff like this?
-
I taped the '85 set last night & will certainly tape this one. But my system is very MOR if any of you are true audiophiles.

how about a new real-time game? Favorite covers of these songs?
Midnight Hour: Chambers Bros, The Dead at Midnight on NYE
-
a cover to start with! Perhaps responsible for Tom Petty?

didn't the Rascals do this too?
-
can't think of a cover. Some people thought it was secretly the Beatles at the time. Kind of sounds like the Knack.
-
Not a bad idea Geoff, but did anyone ever cover Lies?
The Knickerbockers, best Beatles(yay)-alike hit ever!

it sounds exactly like the Beatles. One of the best Fab Four soundalikes of the period.
-
OMG is right. I called in a 10-way BOS. Busy at work but listening.
-
another cover that's been covered. Not sure who else by, except the original Muddy Waters at Last Waltz (If I'm not hallucinating)
Did Chicago do this?

Actually, Linda Ronstatdt did it on Get Closer.
-
Another cover. There were others I'm sure, but none better than Muddy's original. I always think of his version from The Last Waltz, hollering out "M-a-a-a-a-n!" after every line.
-
It's my Life
I'm sure Petty has done this. What a great record!

the JINX waltz!
Chicago did have a song called I'm a Man, but it was an entirely different song.

that's a different "I'm a Man". (actually the one we heard is technically "Mannish Boy", no?)
-
Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole.... especially on his birthday.
-
A Princess Anne panty raid!!!
-

I'm sure Petty has done this. What a great record!
also David Johannsen (part of an Animals medley) on his great live album.

A 15 year old princess, no less. Dang.

why would I make that up? A not-bad version too. One of her more underrated albums, actually.

I remember that night quite clearly. November. A full moon. And not a single case of looting. Different times indeed.

I'm sure Petty has done this. What a great record!
Not only that, but this is a repeat from the set we heard on my Bro's b-day 3/18/05.
list that day:
Liar Liar - Castaways
Shakin' All Over - Chad Allen & The Expressions (mis-ID'd by Dave as The Guess Who, a name they wouldn't change to for 2 more years)
Rescue Me - Fontella Bass
Heart Full of Soul - Yardbirds (post-Clapton)
Treat Her Right - Roy Head
Positively 4th Street - Dylan
Come See About Me - The Supes
It's My Life - The Animals
It's Good News Week - Hedgehoppers Anonymous
You Won't See Me - (yay!) The Beatles
sez here that Dave concludes with Beatles again this time.
-
Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole.... especially on his birthday.
worth mentioning again: Alex Trbek was 25 when he did that.
-
Stupid time for a fire drill. Probably missed five songs...
-
I actually say the Grateful Dead do this at Kaiser once. Pretty hysterical.

It sounded like he called himself "Alec", didn't it?

The Dead were in healthcare? "Thrive" indeed!

HA!! Any cute firemen show up?

I don't think Rod's the right guy to answer that one...

No firemen. Some of the girls in the office were disappointed...

Speaking of covers, they're playing Stevie Ray's instrumental take on Little Wing right now (10:56). Worth tuning in for--he really works out on this one.
-
And the bonus track was Laugh Laugh by the Beau Brummels. I'd thought it was gonna be the Beatles for sure, but Annalisa took care of that two songs after the bonus--Day Tripper. Yay!
Anyone know why the Beau Brummels chose that as their name? Have we talked about this before?

I don't know why, but this band was very important to the seminal SF rock scene back then, and Sal Valentino never seemed to get the respect I think he deserved as a vocalist. He did some great things in Stoneground.

Now THERE's a song that has born some great covers. Derek and the Dominoes, and yes, I even like the Sting version! Does Jon Mayer do this tune? I'm not sure how many Hendrix songs he covers in his SRV style.

I'll trust you to tape Mshray. I was taping on cassette and I don't have any.

I'll roll tape in a minute or so, as soon as Natalie Merchant shuts up.

My only comment on the replay this a.m.:
HOW GOOD A DAMN SONG is "Make It Easy On Yourself"? I've been told many, many times -- including Dave's suggestion in this set -- that Scott Walker is the master of pathos in rock. My god, the walls of melodrama have never been scaled so high as Scott and company did on "Make It Easy On Yourself." Only Gene Pitney ever came legitimately close. Maybe R. Kelly's almost been up there at times. But the Walker Brothers RULE on this song.

Good point, but not sure Walker trumps Pitney in that category, but there's something about Pitney's voice that's totally different, maybe requiring a different appelation than Pathos.
