Title: 22 Nov 2011: it's... 1982
Post by: RGMike on November 21, 2011, 08:18:17 PM
Per AL's recent FB post, she's not back yet... stranded? WTF? I'm confused. But I think another "classic" may be on tap tomorrow.

This being the anniv of JFK's asassination, it would be great if they unearthed Dave's legendary 1963 set where he segued from  a "where did the shots come from?" interview clip to "Up On The Roof". Oh, Dave!

Here's your JFK connection, courtesy of tune # 10 Donald Fagen.   From Wiki:
The term New Frontier was used by Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy in his acceptance speech in the 1960 U.S. presidential election to the Democratic National Convention at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as the Democratic slogan to inspire America to support him. The phrase developed into a label for his administration's domestic and foreign programs.
"We stand today on the edge of a New Frontier -— the frontier of the 1960's, the frontier of unknown opportunities and perils, the frontier of unfilled hopes and unfilled threats. ... Beyond that frontier are uncharted areas of science and space, unsolved problems of peace and war, unconquered problems of ignorance and prejudice, unanswered questions of poverty and surplus."

These sets really have become BORING in recent months.  Going forward I'll probably only listen if it's a pre-'76 year.  Which means 1-2x a month?

Since Sept 22, there have been 7 sets that predated 1976. So yeah, you're about right. And the number of real nuggets within those sets have dropped way off as well. I think AL does what she can but it seems like they are sticking closer to the familiar, classic hits that we all know and fall asleep to. I'm sure this is at the behest of the PD, as we know what gems AL was turning out before his scorched earth policy went into effect in July.

"We stand today on the edge of a New Frontier ..."

which reminds me to request Shona Laing's "Glad I'm Not a Kennedy" in an '88 set...

poor AL -- that article in the Chron totally jinxed her. Dave's last "Turkeys" set was 2008, I believe -- he honored my longstanding Baltimora "Tarzan Boy" request, and it also included the spectacular Ray Stevens megamix. But the one we're hearing Thurs is from 2003!!

and I think we probably argued the placing of The nails tune in a "Turkeys" set back then. OTOH, Paula Cole is a Hit From hell, IMHO
