Now THIS is '80s worth hearing: Judge on KPOO unearths DeBarge's "Love me in a Special Way" -- *swoon*!  And a fab Stevie Wonder harmonica solo too.

Damn: listening to Marshall Crenshaw's 7/2/11 WFUV show and he's doing a late-'80s/early '90s country thang: Foster & Lloyd, Steve Earle's fabulous "The Devil's Right Hand" and much more. Great stuff from when country radio cared more about baby-boomers than Tea Partiers.

more delightfulness: Patti Loveless' "Blame It On Your Heart" and Dwight Yoakam's " I Ain't that Lonely Yet".   Crenshaw found a quote from Steve Earle referring to this New Trad Movement period as "country radio's 'Great Credibility Scare' ". LOL!

And now he switches gears and plays the Four Lads' version of "Istanbul, not Constantinople". (it's a lot slower than TMBG's)

LAWD! JJ busts out Ree-Ree's version of "Oh Me Oh My".

an hour later: 1340 the Boardwalk makes my day with the Chairmen of the Board, "Dangling on a String".

And now Marvin's "One More Heartache", one of his best underplayed singles, followed by Al Wilson's "The Snake"! Have mercy!

and finally: the 4 Tops's underheard "I'm in a Different World".  Nice stuff today.

Another Marshall Crenshaw show (7/9/11) and another OMGWTF: the Association, "Requiem for the Masses". Wow.  This is becoming my favorite podcast.

Treat of the afternoon: "Hits of Yesteryear" plays BOTH versions of "Workin' on a Groovy Thing" -- the 5-D's better-known hit and the orig by Patti Drew, whose take is a tad more soulful.

And followed by the entire "Fingertips" -- parts 1 AND 2 -- by Stevie. "what key? what key?"

Instant OMGWTFLOL: The Nice (early Keith Emerson) doing a fab instrumental of "America" -- the Bernstein West Side Story compo, not the S&G tune. Amazing.

Props to a forgotten Supes nugget: "Some Things You Never Get Used To"

Wow: early Robert John, "If You Don't want My Love" -- nice, and rather Frankie Valli-ish in a '60s MOR way.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, etc etc.

Holy Crap: the 'oo with "Dogs", a 45 that is NTM.  Ditto "Boy" by Lulu.

OMG! Dusty closes her eyes and counts to ten. *swoon*

ETA: tuned back over in time for OC Smith "Hick'ry Holler's Tramp" -- #2 that week, better than it ever did in the US.
