Title: 6 July 2011: it's... 1997
Post by: RGMike on July 06, 2011, 07:38:13 AM
the promo says "the year we said hello to Dolly the Sheep (born 1996) and goodbye to a beloved Princess" (Diana died in '97). So, er...

ETA: OK, Wiki says Dolly's existence was "announced to the public in 1997".

yup.  it was in all the papers ;)

This is the year I've gotten the most requests played in, amazingly: Cardigans, Cornershop, Reel Big Fish, Space, White Town (all Live 105 songs that KFOG ignored in '97). Hoping for Hanson; expecting frequent-fliers like Chumbawumba.  Please, AL: no "Candle in the Wind" remake.

'97 is kind of an odd year for 10@10s... it seems as if there is something of a gap in KFOG's catalog, so we don't get a lot of the usual snoozers to drag down the set. But yeah, we don't need to hear Elton.

Here's hoping for "Electric Barbarella" or "D'Ya Know What I Mean?"

early WOS: 3rd Eye Blind. Wish I was 3rd Ear Deaf.

WOS2 "Most Precarious", which this set certainly is, so far.

it could be worse, like Blues Traveler, perhaps?     And props to Stephan Jenkins for getting Charlize Theron.

I second the 3rd Ear Deaf, but I'm enjoying the BT tune - haven't heard it in ages.

I remember "The Impression That I Get" appearing on the Jed the Fish countdown, to which the host responded "Damn this song sucks." Granted he isn't Casey Kasem, but I was still a little surprised to hear that.

And yeah, this set sucks. From the top of my head, a better '97 10@10 that could conceivably be played:

D'Ya Know What I Mean, Oasis
Lemon Tree, Fools Garden
Electric Barbarella, Duran Duran
If Tomorrow Never Dies, Sheryl Crow
The End Is The Beginning Is The End, Smashing Pumpkins
I Want You, Savage Garden
Legend Of A Cowgirl, Imani Coppola
I & I, Taja Seville
Desperately Wanting, Better Than Ezra
What Would Happen, Meredith Brooks

I don't know about the title, but I can tell you there's no false advertising going on there. That picture is exactly how I felt the two times I listened to the album.

Damnit!  >:(  Last night I was actually brainstorming a bunch of songs that would sound killer for '97, anticipating on requesting them during the next '97 set, and then she goes and does '97 this morning without taking requests & of course stuffs it with blandages &/or repeats.  1997 does NOT have to sound this bad.  Oddly enough, even though I hate Blues Traveller in general, I have to rank Most Precarious as 'most tolerable.'  Perhaps it's because it's the only one of their "hits" that never became overplayed.  The 3EB wasn't bad, but enough is enough.  To be fair, decent TOTHK though.

I could probably do without most of the Live 105 monster hits too, since those still get overplayed between Alice/Mix & even Live & KFOG.

My stab @ 97 (also digging Swellegant's list):
Duran Duran - Electric Barbarella
Save Ferris - Come on Eileen (If she really must play ska...forget SNZ or RBF, play these guys instead)
Eleanor McEvoy - Precious Little
OMD - Walking on the Milky Way
The Verve Pipe - The Freshmen
Aqua - Barbie Girl (Though I know a lot of people hate this & I doubt AL would ever play it)
Faithless - Insomnia
The Cure - Wrong Number
Forest for the Trees - Dream
Merril Brainbridge - Mouth

My pics would be:

Beetlebum/On Your Own - Blur
Gone Till November - Wyclef Jean
Hypnotize - Notorious B.I.G. (since we were talking about Lil' Kim and all...)

Blandages? THAT will be my new word for the day. And thank you for reminding me of the brilliance that was Forest For The Trees.

I do think "Precious Little" made a '97 set not too long ago. In fact, as I recall, it was a fairly bitchin' set.

The '97 set that had Eleanor McEvoy, as well apparently as three of today's less desired.

10/28/10-Thursday!! Who's on 1st in 1997??

 1.  Blur- Song 2
 2.  Mighty Mighty Bosstones- The Impression That I Get
(Intro Reel Big Fish video)
 3.  Reel Big Fish- Sell Out
 4.  3rd Eye Blind- Semi-Charmed Life
(Movie: Good Will Hunting)
 5.  Indigo Girls- Shame On You (BOS-tie!)
 6.  John Lee Hooker/Big Head Todd- Boom Boom (BOS-Tie!)
(TV: King Of The Hill)
 7.  Semesonic- F.N.T (Fascinating New Thing)
 8.  Eleanor McEvoy- Precious Little
(News: Heaven's Gate cult )

Wow, he did!  :o  The reason I guessed AL wouldn't because it seems like the type of song that she might find annoying...although maybe she would still play it.  I hope so!!!

Thanks for looking that up! :)  I think that one was better because even though it had just as many that could have gone either way, there were enough good ones to pull it up.  Whereas in today's set there was nothing; not to mention the ones that are already Katrinas (and she has a lot of 'em for 97 considering how few times she's been there) certainly aren't getting any less-Katrina-y.

Also love sundaygal's Notorious B.I.G. pick!
