Damn. Hoping Dave can work some nugget-producing magic on this one.
The Yes tune isn't boding well, although better than Owner of a Lonely Heart.

[snore]It's prog rock![/snore]

Yikes! MAW, "WCIBN". I'll only run and hide, indeed.
-
Early BOS to Naked Eyes and "Promises Promises," proving that chicken-scratch guitar didn't altogether die with disco.
-
ooo! BOS Naked Eyes' OTHER hit, just for being a non-Katrina.
-
this set is putting me to sleep, although I haven't heard "Promises Promises" in a while.
So to fan the flames a little, allow me to be snarky about something I just read on ESPN.com about the Tour De France:
But Armstrong said he felt he could rely on his remaining seven Discovery Channel teammates to help fill Beltran's place in the mountains that straddle France and Spain.
Either the writer & his editor have no idea what the word 'straddle' means, or else they are utterly ignorant of the geography of France, which would seem to be a modest requirement when covering the tour.

he was thinking about Lance straddling Sheryl Crow.

Great honk, but this set has been Dullsville. And I won't even go on about how I hate that Men At Work song. Peter Schilling's cool, though. That hekps. But, it's also "Major Katrina" if'n you follow.

it's Katrina Klobberin' time!

a breath of fresh air in a synth-addled set

Wit'cha, Beej--Major Tom has been about the only thing that's piqued my interest so far (OK, the Stevie Ray tune wasn't bad. But not notable either.)
-
a breath of fresh air in a synth-addled set
Normally SRV borders on Guilty Displeasure for me -- I appreciate the craft but it doesn't, y'know, move me. But that sounded good this morning.
-
That's what this world needs, though- another song about the further adventures of Major Tom- last seen in Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes"....

I think it's a generic SRV song, but stands apart from all the other stuff tonally.

Now THIS is more like it--my introduction to Simple Minds.
(True mondegreen confession: When this first came out, I thought Jim Kerr was singing about 4 guys named Eddie. "Eddie 1, Eddie 2, Eddie 3, Eddie 4." I figured it out eventually, but not until I'd embarrassed myself once or twice.)
-
On another topic: I hate you, Michael Bay (http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/celebrity/50322004.htm). I really, really do. Seriously. I do.
-
BOS Simple Minds.
I saw the Police that summer and Simple Minds were the opening act, except in St. Louis where local radio guys had somehow managed to switch Joan Jett for Messrs Kerr, et al. I was deeply dissappointed, but most of my fellow St. Louisans had still never heard of Simple Minds.
Alas.

I will never hear it the same again!
"Eddie 1, Eddie 2, Eddie 3, Eddie 4!"
-
The guy reading the announcement about Grenada sounds kind of like Mr. Peabody.

I had a mondegreen come back tome this mornign when "KIng of Pain" played. I used to alway think they sang "bless my soul again" instead of "that's my soul up there".
BOS #2, always, to "New Frontier". Great video too.
-
Simple Minds rule. And I like the band, too. Heh.
Katrina Fron-tiiieeeerrrr....
-
BOS to Mr Fagen
Video had some cool animations of picasso 3 musicians
-

she's got a touch of Tuesday Weld.
I hate Mr Bay too, tho' Island looks like a decent enough concept.

I've been a Dan fan since 1972, but this is too cold for me.

that's Natty Peabody, mon.

A decent enough concept that COULD have had naked Johannson breasts in it.
But, hey- I ain't bitter.

I can't resist any opportunity to quote T. S. Eliot!
Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden. My words echo
Thus, in your mind.
But to what purpose
Disturbing the dust on a bowl of rose-leaves
I do not know.

Never bought any Floyd after "The Wall", so this is unfamiliar. Sounds good though.
-
HM "Bang on the Drum" cuz it's a great song.
-
VHM Todd, although I know I'm in the minority... why do so many folks hate this song? Who doesn't want to bang on thier boss's head?

WOS, 'cause it annoys the hell out of me.
-
VHM Todd, although I know I'm in the minority... why do so many folks hate this song? Who doesn't want to bang on thier boss's head?
We hear it too much, it's too repetitive, but at least it has a bass solo!
-
Not a fan of Floyd but I LOVE T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets. Easily the best thing I read in college and still very impactive on my life-approach.
And no crankypants today, but WWWOS to Todd and his drums.
-

We're a minority? No way! Oh, well.
IIII don't want to work
I just want to kick the ass of
Michael Bay...

The ska version by Bad Manners is a nice alternative.

Got me--it's not his best but I don't hate it either. Probably the most danceable song he ever did.
-
HM "Bang on the Drum" cuz it's a great song.
There are too many Todd purists out there. If this song were done under a pseudonym or as a side project it would probably be better received these days.
But if you're having a bad day at work, nothing better than fantasizing about "banging on the drum like it was my boss' head."
BOS #3 for obscure U2.
-
and here I thought nothing would be worthwhile. If only I could crank up this one inch speaker!

This U2 song's pretty cool. And non-Katrinaiatric.

Todd's an guilty displeasure for me, mostly. Some of his stuff is okay, but none of it really excites me. BOTD is the only one I despise, and it has nothing to do with it being Todd doing it. It just grates on my nerves. Some people can handle nails on chalkboard, others can't...

One of my best friends at UCSB, named Jeff, just died this last weekend of a heart attack. I was best man at his wedding, read Eliot there. We use to stay up all night quoting Four Quartets. Ch-ch-changes.

That wasn't the worst decision you could have made--there wasn't much Floyd worth buying after The Wall. This album is a footnote, they were in last gasp mode with The Final Cut.
-
We can all agree that "Who Can It Be Now?" can officially, like, never played again, right? Just me? That's cool.
Still pissed at Michael Bay, though.

Geoff, my sincere condolences on your friend's passing. I hope there's some comfort that when you see him again you will both know the place for the first time.

Yeah, the psycho-Waters aspect was shrieking at full force here; unbalanced as far as I felt.

thank you. Back then "The Magus" movie was being shown in Isla Vista, and those four lines were prominently featured, and somehow caught fire; everyone seemed to be talking about where those lines came from.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

Damn, sorry to hear about that, Geoff--my condolences. Stuff like that really brings you back to earth.
