The artist who wrote and performed "Lonely Boy" and "Thank You For Being a Friend" died of a heart attack today.

Bummer. Can't believe he's only 4 years older than me; that means he was barely 20 when he played on some of the earlier Ronstadt records.

another obit I found: says he played all the instruments on Art Garfunkel's cover of "I Only Have Eyes For You".

this also says he wrote the theme to Mad About You, but he only sang it.

and here's Gold long after "Lonely Boy": he teamed up with 10cc's Graham Gouldman -- they called themselves Wax and had this 1987 UK hit, "Building a Bridge to Your Heart". It did nothing in the US but it's one of my favorite "shoulda-beens".

I remember seeing him when he was the band leader for Ronstadt during the "Heart Like a Wheel" days. A totally excellent guitarist, in command of multiple styles.
