Title: Tues 7/12/05 -- it's 1979
Post by: RGMike on July 12, 2005, 07:35:34 AM
Dave spilled the beans at 6am, and promised Bram Tchaikovsky. Now if he'd take a cue from the Peak and do the 12-string trifecta by including the Shoes and the Records...

Heds up gang--today's Dave's birthday. He let it slip while they were talking to the guy from 21st Amendment brewpub this morning. Hope he's got something up his sleeve.

Third time I've heard "Logical Song" this week, in three completely unrelated contexts.  Heard "Goodbye Stranger" while en route to Rehoboth as well.  You'd think Supertramp had reunited for Live 8.

BOS tie to Cheap Trick and this Dire Straits tune, both on the strength of great guitar work. Yeah, I know we heard Page, too, but you expect that from him.

How many guitar parts do you hear in Once Upon a Time...? I'm counting three minimum, rhythm on the right,  counter rhythm on the left, and the lead part right up the middle.

Well, there's your Starship (Red Octopus, Dragon Fly) and there's your Starship (Freedom at Point Zero, Knee Deep in the Hoopla). Once Marty  bailed and Craig Chaquico unpacked his fuzztone, things went into decline.

The pun should have been intended.  But the Freedom at Point Zero album actually has some really solid stuff (followup single "Girl With the Hungry Eyes" not being among it).

It's Machine... which is (I think) connected in some way to Dr Buzzard/August Darnell/Kid Creole.  Indeed, I think Kid Creole did a version of this too.

"There But For the Grace of God Go I," by Machine.  Their only hit; they disbanded after two years when they realized people don't like to listen to lyrics while they're shaking their rumps to the funk and doing rails off each other's tailbones.  I think they *might* have a connection to August Darnell, but I'm not sure.  This was a Hot 100 hit in America, fared better in England.

ETA:  written by August Darnell, this song Hit #77.
Here's the AMG bio:

Best known for its 1979 cult classic "There but for the Grace of God Go I," Machine was a soul/disco/funk band that tackled social and political issues at a time when many of its colleagues were afraid to. Machine was formed in New York in 1977, when the disco-era was in full swing and most R&B, disco, and funk lyrics were escapist in nature. The members of Machine — who included lead singer Clare Bathé, lead singer/guitarist Jay Stovall, bassist Melvin Lee, keyboardist Kevin Nance, and drummer Lonnie Ferguson — were big fans of the R&B message songs of the early '70s, and they regretted the fact that after 1975, many R&B artists had gotten away from social and political commentary. Machine set out to change that when, in 1978, it signed with RCA and recorded the single "There but for the Grace of God Go I" — a brilliant piece of social commentary about Latino immigrants who move to the U.S. in search of a better life but quickly realize how dangerous the mean streets of the Bronx can be. Released in early 1979, the disco/soul masterpiece became a club hit and is considered a cult classic. Machine's self-titled debut album also came out in 1979, and in 1980, RCA released its sophomore effort, Moving On. Regrettably, Machine's second album was also its last. Moving On wasn't a big seller, and in 1981, Machine broke up.

Surprising that they can't get away with the Isley Brothers singing "bullsh*t" in Fight the Power, but this fairly descriptive paean to teenage lust is okey dokey.

ah, yes. i remember the hat now.

one highlight i forgot to mention when reviewing "being bobby brown": after bobby broke into the wrong side of a minibar with a screwdriver, he and whitney had some crackhead discussion about him having to remove blockage from her rear end. then she mentioned something about dating someone who had a feces fetish (i think that's what she was saying). then bobby ran around the hotel room trying to figure out who it was. he decided it was eddie murphy, so he wrote eddie's name down on a notepad.

i was traumatized.

Now THAT would rule. Has DM ever played that in a 10@10 before? Make a fine nugget, that would.

If anyone has that song, y'alls know where to email me.

Same goes for the Walker Bros.' "Make It Easy on Yourself" -- I can't find any WB comps around here, even at the Virgin Megastore.

Can't help with the Walker Bros. but I think we've got a Buzzcocks disc or two at home. I'll try to remember to dig it out tonight.

The only thing missing from this set, now that we've covered so many genre bases?  Closing with the Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone That You Shouldn't've)."

There's a great series of various artist compilations under the heading D.I.Y., one of which D.I.Y.: Starrry Eyes: UK Pop II (1978-79) includes "Girl Of My Dreams", "Ever Fallen In Love" as well as the title track by The Records.  If you see it snap it up.

I know they were pretty derivative, in a derivative field, but I always liked that song.  Didn't they have another hit?

yes, "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore",  their best-known song, a fabulous Spector-esque single a la "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".
