In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Urth requested the Del Fuegos. I requested Aztec Camera. Both hail from....er...north of the border, to say the least.
Alas, there will be no Cinco de Mayo set, but a trip to 1984. (Yay!)
-
Yippee, we're getting our 80s after all! :D She broke the ending in -6 streak, though.
-
And I was so hoping for the chance to request "The Edge Of Heaven". Again.
-
I've requested 10-9-8 by Face To Face (again). AL's bringing the record in today (again)...fingers crossed! :)
-
Mister Miyagi and the Karate Kid waxes on and off to open the set. That wrist action can come in handy.
... then REM implores us Don't Go Back To Rockville.
Hall & Oates sign up for classes at the Learning Annex. aw, yeah! aw, yeah!
BOS!
-
I forgot how good Adult Education was. BOS1
-
dang, Mister Miyagi just won't shut up. no wonder he got replaced with Al

Nice call - I didn't know anyone else remembered that song!

Nice to hear!
-
Holee shit!! She played 10-9-8!!! BOS!!!

Listening from the beginning but just got to the computer. VHM Depeche Mode, People are People.
I love early REM but Rockville kinda plain. Grew up in the San Joaquin Valley so I always change the lyric to "Don't go back to Fresno", which seems much more relevant. Better songs from this album: Pretty Persuasion, Harborcoat.
Thompson Twins should have sold out to corporate America.. The result:

Sunset Grill was a Dave Katrina (Moreytrina?), right? It's just ok.
-
...and watch Don Henley get BOS.
As much as I love this Style Council song, it's verging on Katrina territory.
-
BOS Style Council, really enjoyable if familiar set.

I wonder if the SC is off vinyl, like in Dave days.

Wooo! BOS Bruce Cockburn, Lovers in a Dangerous Time... I know it's also a Morey frequent flyer but I love the song and man behind it. Talk about living out your convictions.

I remember when "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" came out, I was not impressed. And I was naive -- I didn't know what kind of a rocket launcher he was talking about. I thought he was talking about a biiiig rocket. That seemed rather silly. But now I know; he's so much more than that song. And a very tasty guitar player too. Check out his instrumental CD.

This has turned into a very sophistipop set. VHM to Joe Jackson.
-
I was living in Phoenix in 83-84 and recall when LA hosted the '84 Olympics they sent many of their homeless out of LA for a few weeks with free bus & train vouchers, many suddenly showed up in Phoenix.
-
Not impressed with this smooth jazz/fusion "What You Want".
-
I'm feeling like she's played the last 3 songs in a 1984 set recently. Maybe I'm having deja vu...
-
Los Lobos close it out with a run-of-the-mill performance. One of those bands that never evolved.

well, they still play the blooz-rock stuff, but they've ventured off into lots of different territory, including Mexican folk music. FWIW, they're a Deadhead favorite, too, and often include Bertha at live shows, esp here in the Bay area. I've always liked them, I remember seeing them right about this time in DC at the Bayou club. (however, they ignored my request to play Diablo Con Vestido Azul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11kJxcerLtI), dang it -- they did the song for the Eating Raoul (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083869/soundtrack) soundtrack) I like David Hidalgo's vocals better than Cesar Rosas' voice (Cesar sang the one we heard). They should have been even more famous, IMO.

Agreed...no complaints here about repeating Thompson Twins, Depeche Mode, Don Henley, Style Council, & Bruce Cockburn. BOS'ing the Hall&Oates, JJ & F2F songs too!

another from my wishlist -- and a bustout, iirc.

to each his own....but I beg to differ. I was away from the computer, but heard most of this set the first time around & the whole set on Saturday, and I think this was one of the top ten '84 sets ever.

This would be an ambitious undertaking, but I wonder if a future iteration of the Shraytabase might include asterisked notes of Best of Breed.
