The week can only get better.

Especially when "Invisible Touch" shows up this early. Did people really like this when it came out, or was it just a huge self-fulfilling marketing push?
-
Phil Collins sucks.

indeed, especially starting with "Tonight She Comes" (oh Ric, you braggart! bad enough you're married to a supermodel) and "Invisible Touch" (Genesis when they were lame).
cue the Blow Monkeys...

Phil Collins sucks.
whatever, I don't have the interest to tell them apart.

it was an era of MTV and Top 40 radio feeding off each other. the MTV Kids liked the song; their parents saw, in Phil, their own paunchy balding selves.

We did not, repeat did NOT, trade arms for hostages...
or have sex with that woman...
or lie about WMDs...
or...

BOS so far? Psychedelic Furs

I'm no expert on where Genesis ends & Phil Collins begins. I just hate Phil Collins.
Now I have to go make a phone call. I'll check back in as soon as I can....

It seems to me that the mid 80's had more than the usual amount of total crap that made the charts, and I think it was EXACTLY marketing over substance. The new wave stuff was largely indie-based & when the big labels tried to tap into it they just produced a torrent of stinking offal. And this is exactly when Phil Collins became ubiquitous. Not a coincidence.

So far we're bucking for a ten-way WOS tie. The Psychedelic Furballs Pretty in Pink has been the least objectionable, except that it's the subpar remake of their own song (originally released in 81 I think) for the film of the same name.

tentative BOS for INXS "This Time".
Didja hear Dave Navarro on the morning show today promoting "Rock Star INXS"
-
BOS INXS -- I missed the interview with Dave Navarro, who was plugging the find-a-new-lead-singer-for-INXS reality show. But Dave seemed quite horrified by the idea (as am I) and Greg had to admonish him not to pass judgment before the interview.

as are the PSBs.
"which do you choose?
the hard or soft option?"

I heard the interview, interesting to learn that INXS has already auditioned many singers, and hadn't been satisfied, including...(wait for it Gaz)...Terrence Trent D'Arby!
Not a lot of other revelations. Tonight is a reality based ep, all the wannabes living together. Tomorrow is performance night & Wednesday is Get-the-Boot night.
fwiw, Listen Like Thieves was released in 1985. "This Time" was relased as a single in 1985 & peaked at #81. "What You Need" charted in 1986, but not this song.

I suppose I like Simple Minds more than anyone else here, but this gets my BOS #2 in a very non-competitive set.

(a) I tend to dislike reality TV generally (HMBOMT is a rare exception, since it make no bones about its own cheeziness).
(b) INXS was a great band. Mr Hutchence was a great singer. He's dead. If you want to replace him, fine, but to do it via what has become the cheeziest cliche of our time... well there goes yer rock'n'roll cred out the window, IMHO.

They think he's a righteous dude!
quick, there was about 2 seconds of Yello's "Oh Yeah" at the end of the clip. What other film of this year used that song?
-
Mercifully short for an '86 set.
I think I'll pass on the bonus track (which means it'll be something great, I'm sure).

Which may sound frightful on the surface -- but TTD sang the hell out of "Never Tear Us Apart."

Nah, you're in the clear. Steve Winwood, Higher Love.

Oh good -- actually it's a song I absolutely LOVED at the time (one of the best singles of the year, I thought) but which I don't need to hear more than once a year.
