the brief obit fails to mention that (as any Casey Kasem listener knows) the song was written as a joke, Jean and her brother Mark performed it at a party, everybody laughed... and a crude tape recording of the perf was played for a record company guy who thought it had "hit" written all over it, and he was right, tho' it was because scores of teens took the song seriously.
