Title: 27 Jan 2011: it's.. 1982
Post by: RGMike on January 27, 2011, 07:56:44 AM
AL posted that today it's "destination unknown" and linked to the Missing Persons song of the same name. So it's not clear if it's 1982 (which is due) or a Mystery Year. Fogheads are equally puzzled.

And forgive me for beating a dead horse, but one person, who assumes it's a Mystery Year, guessed 1967, which we just did last week.  And we all know what causes short-term memory loss...

ETA: it's '82 and AAAACK! instant WOS Asia.

I guess I was wrong then, which surprises me, not because I'm never wrong, but 1980 was done on Tuesday, and we generally don't have two close years come up in the same week.

I'm thinking of doing another 7 FB posts based on music, only it will be based on "Q" artists. Quarterflash would be a leading candidate.

BOS Simple Minds, Missing Persons, The The, Roxy Music

for the most part, this was right in my wheelhouse back in the day, except for You Dropped the Bomb On Me: I didn't know how cool this song was until years later, when I becames more secure in my musical tastes

Uncertain Smile - this is not the cut from the Soul Mining album (1983), which I like better, this must be the original 82 release of the song?  originally titled "Cold Spell Ahead"?

The The  - (1982–1987)
The The's next single was a variation on "Cold Spell Ahead", an early version of "Uncertain Smile". Produced in New York by Mike Thorne; it reached #68 UK. This version is different from the more familiar album version, and featured sax and flute by session player Crispin Cioe rather than (as on the album version) the piano of Squeeze's Jools Holland.
  (from wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_The)

btw, Johnny Marr played w The The when I saw them in 1990 at the Warfield. Score!

"I just know they're going to be the new Eagles -- Here they are, the waitresses!" -

When I saw ZZTop last fall, one of the opening bands was The Eagles of Death Metal:

"Despite the name, Eagles of Death Metal are not a death metal band. Jesse Hughes said that a friend was trying to introduce Josh Homme to the death metal genre. When he played a song by the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was death metal, Homme called them "The Eagles of Death Metal"."
(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagles_of_death_metal)

(the other opening band at Bone Bash II was 38 Special .. uh, score?

Missing Persons to me combined rock and new wave, a la The Cars. great hooks, although Dale's later brush with the law in re: animal abuse removes some glitter.

This is not your older stoner brother's King Crimson!  the add'n of Tony Levin (U of Rochester Eastman School of Music grad) Bill Buford, and Adrian Belew gave KC new "prog legs".  I never really got into AB's voice however. My fave song from this incarnation was Sleepless.

oh, Roxy...!  BOS in perpetuity.

Asia - Soul Survivor was a better song, IMHO.
Quarterflash?  blargh!

BOS Temptation! New Order, baby.

up down turn around BOS4!

New Order had the best cover art and were known for their "secret" groove notations on their singles and 12" vinyl.  I have this 12" and it reads, "What do you think?"  I can't believe I've never seen them perform live.

I have!  I was their limo driver and had a backstage pass when they played Irvine Meadows in '89 with PiL & The Sugarcubes opening.  Took them from their San Diego hotel (previous night's gig) to the Newport Beach Four Seasons, then to the soundcheck, then back to the Four Seasons to mellow out until show time (and they were extraordinarily, counterintuitively mellow the whole time), then back to the gig, then I waited for at least 2 1/2 hrs for their backstage afterparty to wind down (I was invited but it would have been very unprofessional to accept:  "Hey lets get our driver stoned & drunk before he drives us 35 minutes to our hotel!"), then finally back to the Four Seasons before deadheading back to SD, didn't get home until about 4 am.  In addition to meeting the band, I got to chat with Johnny Lydon, Bjork, and Ted Gardner who was stage managing PiL, but was also Jane's Addiction's manager & eventually co-owner of Lollapalooza.  I'd met him prior, having been Jane's driver in late '88 & he remembered me, even asked me if I had any interest in managing music.

Should have said, "Yes!"  I quickly came to believe that this was one of the 3 or 4 biggest regrets of my life, even before Lollaapalooza took shape.
