Title: 21 Jan 2011: it's... 1998
Post by: RGMike on January 21, 2011, 07:55:29 AM
AL noted that she was "swamped" yesterday; the '77 setlist still not posted and no clues for today either. We're overdue for some '90s, no?

I'll predict we'll be visiting 1998 today.

I don't even *have* a 1998 wishlist. But Austin "Bob" did '98 this week:

Quote
Eagle-Eye Cherry -Save Tonight
Semisonic -Closing Time
New Radicals -You Get What You Give
Third Eye Blind -Jumper
Barenaked Ladies -One Week
Matchbox Twenty -Real World
Fastball -The Way
Goo Goo Dolls -Slide
Savage Garden -Truly Madly Deeply

and I would not be surprised to hear any of those, plus Will Smith's "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It", Marcy Playground, Alanis or some Sheryl 'Ho.

WTF pick: Celine Dion's Titanic HFH

Early BOS to Harvey Danger.  "Paranoia, paranoia, everybody's coming to get me" is a great singalong line.

Blech, that list is awful. You can probably hear all of them on Alice pretty much any hour. In 2011.

I initially misread that as "Bitch, that list is awful," and was like, WHOA  :o

"One Week" was inevitable, I suppose.  I still giggle at a lot of these lines.

Without comment, here are ten songs I made on a mix tape to a girl I was dating, primarily in 1998.

“Ray Of Light”, Madonna
“Stay (Wasting Time)”, Dave Matthews Band
“Closing Time”, Semisonic
“Deadweight”, Beck
“Raspberry Swirl”, Tori Amos
“Flagpole Sitta”, Harvey Danger
“Abracadabra”, Sugar Ray
“Acquiesce”, Oasis
“Joining You”, Alanis Morissette
“Rachel”, Buffalo Tom

I'll back up the Smash Mouth HM... it was a reasonable followup to "Walkin' On The Sun". Don't quite get the hate for them.

For me, the hate stems from their paint-by-numbers mindless covers that they pasted on soundtracks for years after hitting the big time.

And that "All-Star" song grated on me - a million listens'll do that.

It's kind of arbitrary, but it's the def I've been using since I began listening to oldies radio regularly (3WS in 1985, when Shocking Blue's "Venus" was the most recent thing they'd play).

I think it's a case where the whole is less than the sum of its parts... I do like "You Get What You Give" (although, I have to say that I like "Technicolor Lover" from the same album a lot more), but the 10 Bob songs in tandem kind of bore me.

I remain fond of "Mother We Just Can't Get Enough" from that album.  I was living in SoCal when that album was out, and that song reminds me of the car rides to the parties where I had my few dabblings with Bolivian marching powder.  A very direct association for me.

you guys SHOULD do something like that, although I would say think hard about committing to such a rigid literary 'voice' like a cranky pants Statler and Waldorf duo.   it might corner you in some ways and then you'll be sort of apologizing when you are 'nice'  -- then again, maybe that won't be a problem!  ;)

I was fading in and out of consciousness when the radio alarm clock turned this set on, too bad nothing exciting enough to pull myself up came on.
WOS's to Harvey Danger, Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies.  If I had to pick one, it would be the CPD, easily.  I can understand the appeal of "Flagpole Sitta" and can respect the BSO even if I hate everything about swing.  But "Zoot Suit Riot" is inexcusable and so are the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.  Stupid band name, stupid title, stupid lyrics, subpar music, annoying voice...etc.  One of the worst songs of all time.
That Crystal Method song is NTM & in my half-asleep state of mind was thinking Prodigy.  I will have to tune in @ 10 tonight.
That Offspring song is silly, but not too troublesome.  We enjoyed it back in the day.
I must have fallen asleep again before the Donnas came on.
I'm mad that she didn't take requests because I wanted to request "Time Ago" by Black Lab, "To the Moon & Back" by Savage Garden, "Brick" by Ben Folds Five, & "Spark" by Tori Amos.  Although she mentioned she went for upbeat, which the latter few def. aren't.
