Title: 17 Dec 2010: it's... "Festivus Friday"
Post by: RGMike on December 14, 2010, 09:14:30 AM
The 1st Annual, sez AL.  I'm tempted to ask for Shirley Q Liquor's "12 days of Kwanzaa" but I guess that's too un-PC.

yeah, that is hilarious, but horribly un-PC.

did you know that Shirley is also Betty Butterfield?

So... Festivus... does this mean Holiday-type songs that aren't Christmas-related?  Brain fried right now.

It's (per a post she just put up on FB) more non-traditional holiday tunes, winter tunes, etc.  I had just sent her my list  and she wrote back to say that several were perfect; "Hazy Shade" was on tap for tomorrow's '66 set but she may save it for Fri.

Sometimes in Winter (Blood Sweat & Tears)
Hazy Shade of Winter (S&G or Bangles)
Winterwood (Don McLean)
Wintertime (Steve Miller)
Wintertime Love (Doors)
Winter (Stones)
If We make it Thru December (Merle Haggard)
Christians & Pagans (Dar Williams)

Instant BOS Kinks. A classic the very first time we heard it.

If you've heard one "swingin' " retro-big-band Xmas pastiche, you've heard 'em all.  Big Bad Bosstone Voodoo Setzer Orch, or something.

WOS Brian Setzer.  His whole revival felt like a shtick-up to me.

A&P may not be providing them, or anyone else, the world's smallest turkeys for long: they filed for bankruptcy this week.

YAY! uber-BOS4 Stephen Colbert.  And ya gotta hear "Jingle Bell Rock" at least once a year.  VHM.

WOS "Mele Kellikkimakka" -- there really is NO good version of this silly tune.

No big reason; I just think it's a pedestrian song, and I'm tired of it.

The Hawaiian Xmas song is less overplayed, but this version had all the life sucked out of it.  Where's Bette Midler when you need her?

BOS5 Dar Williams, a clever and delightful lyric, tho' the orig studio version has more snap than this acoustic take.

agree with this, but Jingle Bell Rock is ok with me.  But this Indigo Girls (?)  song is not my cuppa nog.

Q: How many lesbians does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: Three.  One to screw it in and two to write the folk song.

NTM, and co-BOS among the songs along with "Christmas Wrapping."  This is quite nice.  But I can't keep straight Dar Williams, Lucinda Williams and Victoria Williams.

BOS Cheech & Chong.

I don't know - apart from the interludes, I've been less than wowed by this set. Perhaps it's time to hit the gin-and-tonika!

Well, I had to justify that 'screw in the light bulb joke' somehow!  ;)

BOS Willie and C&C

And this Cheech & Chong keeps going and going... I suppose in their spirit I should smoke some marijuan-ika!

EDIT: If this were the baseball website I frequent, I'd have to offer sunday a Coca Cola!

BTW for those of you kids on iTunes and/or Rhapsody... could you see if those 2 Colbert tunes

"Another Christmas Song" and "Little Dealer Boy"

are available and if so, could you send 'em to me? (i'm happy to reimburse). They're not on Amazon.  mschafer1 -at- earthlink.net

I still think a First Day of Winter set would be awesome on Tuesday; not holding my breath for it.

Dave had one he played a number of years back (2002? 2003?) done by Chris Isaak and Kenny Dale Johnson that sounded like it was done live in the studio at KFOG. I haven't heard it since, but I remember thinking that one was pretty darn cool.

Dar is the one who isn't crazy. Victoria is loopy crazy, with a really whiny voice, and Lucinda is a little more twangy, and she's crazy as a shithouse rat.
