Title: Wed 6/29/05: a "classic" SF set
Post by: RGMike on June 29, 2005, 07:45:59 AM
They're making a big deal on the Morning Show about today being San Francisco's "birthday" -- something I've never heard mentioned before in 14 years of living here.  Wheter this translates into a 10@10 theme set remains to be seen.

Oh yes, it will be a "Why I Came to SF" theme set, whatever that means.

Happy 229th Birthday SF!

Damn, I wish they'd solicited submissions for this.  I'd love to tell the tale of how I came to arrive in SF in September 1996 -- the story would close with Steve Winwood's "While You See a Chance," which summarized the whole odyssey for me nicely.

I'll have to cut out of the set early: I'm interviewing media critic Robert McChesney at 1:45 and need to prepare my notes and recording equipment.

It means Scott MacKenzie and/or Fever Tree... and the Village People. I'd prefer The Pet Shop Boys' cover of "Go West", tho'.

It might also mean another dose of Sylvester, if Dave's as hung up on that bio as he seemed yesterday.  Which would be welcome, as I've never heard his take on "I Who Have Nothing."

Well, if there is Syl, it can't be "Mighty Real" which we got Friday and "Disco Heat" which was yesterday.

so it turns out to be a rerun.  whatever, Dave. Not that SF songs aren't always wonderful, mind you.  But the buildup made it sound like this was newly inspired.

Is it? I didn't hear the morning show discussion, but I got the impression that the concept was used for a KFOG variety set a few years back, but the set itself was original.

I'm with Urth, that's what I thought Dave was saying.

I'll have to request it from Dean.

In fairness, the stories from Fogheads are pretty neat.  On the other hand, we heard this Chris Isaak at 6:10 this morning...

So what brought you folks to SF?
myself, I came from Denver to San Jose looking for a job in 1988.
Got married there and left in 2001

Eeew, another rough seque out of the Chris Isaak tune. Dave must have not gotten his tape cued up in time.

I came here because I got engaged to a girl who lived here and she didn't want to move to Sacramento (where I was), and I was ready for a change of scenery. And we lived happily ever after.

My Dad took a job in Fremont back in '77. We lived there for a few years- then Fair Oaks (new job)- then back to Fremont a few years after that.

I went to SF State after high school. Decided to live here. I may move someday. Maybe. But, I like it here.

Aaaaack! "sausalito 'trina nite".

I had been here a number of times on vacay, and always thought it'd be great to live here. When my job at ABC disappeared in 1989 (accompanied by a very nice buyout package), I decided to make the move while I was still young enough to enjoy it.

Our family moved here from Boise when I was six.  Not sure why I haven't left yet...

Oh yeah, Boise.

I remember our first summer here (actually, the east bay) -- it was '67.  Dad loaded us all in the family station wagon (a Pontiac) and we took in the sights of SF.  Including Haight-Ashbury.  "Okay kids, roll up the windows and lock the doors..."

These songs are nice (the Fever Tree is always welcome), but am I just jaded, or does this set seem a little cliche?

3 for 3, actually... but who's counting?

And this is definitely a rerun of the set he did a couple years ago (or at least large chunks of it -- I remember the comments Dave makes between songs, which he almost never does).

My story is: born in Burlingame in March '63, family moved to D.C. in late '65, three years on Lon gIsland in the early 70's, then in St. Louis from summer of '73  through HS (& my folks are still there).  Didn't relocate back to SF until Aug. '96 (within days of Gaz).  Brought here by my Taiwanese wife, whose family had transplanted themselves 10 years earlier.

So I'm native born Bay Area AND I'm an immigrant, depends how you look at it.

What brought me here?  I'd graduated college in May 1995 and was languishing at my mother's house outside Pittsburgh, PA in the summer of '96.  A mutual friend reconnected me with my friend Brandon, who'd moved to SF some months prior and absolutely loved the place.  I expressed my envy, noting that I'd long wanted to live in SF ever since discovering the JA/JS and reading about the hippie scene.

"Then why aren't you here?" he asked.

I didn't have a good answer.  So Brandon offered to let me stay at his place while I look for an apartment and a job.  I moved there with a few duffel bags, a wing and a prayer on September 17, 1996.  Found a cheap apartment in the Tenderloin a week later, and a job with Charles Schwab two days after that.

But what assured me in my decision: My first day in town, I made a pilgrimage to 2400 Fulton Street, the onetime home of Paul, Grace and the gang.  On the way back to Brandon's place I stopped in the panhandle of GG Park, wondering why on earth I'd made such a monumental decision with nothing secure.  Turned on my walkman, and the first song was Steve Winwood's "While You See a Chance."  The lines made immediate sense.  "Are you still free?"  Yes, I was.

I still love you, SF.  It was so very hard to go.

D'oh! I stand corrected. And if you definitely recall hearing the songs, comments etc, I'll defer to that. Those KFOG variety sets aren't always scheduled so I doubt I heard it myself.

These last couple of songs have definitely been departures from the "cliche" material that spawned my last entry. No idea who either one is.

These last

it's... a variation on a set Dave has done many times over 20+ years. Corny, but Dave's corny (and I mean that in the nicest possible way).

I dropped out of UCSB for a variety of reasons, but two of them were Cold Blood and Tower of Power's albums, calling me home.  I've lived in the Bay Area most of my life (except first 9 months in SLO).  Moved in with some friends on Miramar St. the week the Fillmore West closed.  Went to see Boz Scaggs, Cold Blood, Taj Mahal.  Great show.
