another "copycats" set. Someone on FB *DARED* to diss Anne Murray's "Daydream Believer"; I countered with her wonderful "You Won't See Me".
-
This was actually a birthday request from me. Not necessarily 80s, but girlfriend knows what I like I guess! I actually music-geeked out a few weeks ago and started compiling a list of covers songs that I wouldn't mind hearing on 10@10 (before my aunt was in the hospital, of course) and e-mailed it to AL. She dug the idea and told me she would definitely be playing some of the songs!
Thanks again for all of your well-wishes for my aunt. :)
Here's the list:
1. Ziggy Stardust (Bowie) - Bauhaus, 1982
2. It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City (Springsteen) - David Bowie, 1976
3. La Vie En Rose (Edith Piaf) - Grace Jones, 1977
4. Dedicated To The One I Love (The Shirelles) - The Mamas and the Papas, 1967
5. Handbags And Gladrags (Rod Stewart) - Stereophonics, 2001
6. Only Love Can Break Your Heart (N. Young) - St. Etienne, 1990
7. Alone Again Or (Love) - The Damned, 1986
8. Ticket To Ride (Beatles) - The Carpenters, 1969
9. Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (Steam) - Bananarama, 1983
10. White Lines (Don’t Do It) (Grandmaster Melle Mel) - Duran Duran, 1995
11. Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel) - Elvis Presley, 1970
12. Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door (Dylan) - Guns N’ Roses, 1990
13. Crimson And Clover (Tommy James and the Shondells) - Joan Jett and
the Blackhearts, 1982
14. Happiness Is A Warm Gun (Beatles) - The Breeders, 1990
15. This Wheel’s On Fire (Bob Dylan & the Band) - Siouxsie and the
Banshees, 1987
16. Everybody Knows (L. Cohen) - Concrete Blonde, 1990
17. I’m Down (Beatles) - Beastie Boys, 1986
18. Pressing On (Dylan) - John Doe, 2007
19. I Am The Cosmos (Chris Bell/Big Star) - This Mortal Coil, 1991
20. Summer Breeze (Seals & Crofts) - The Isley Brothers, 1974
21. I’m Free (Rolling Stones) - The Soup Dragons, 1990
22. Strawberry Fields Forever (Beatles) - Candy Flip, 1990
23. She’s A Rainbow (Rolling Stones) - World of Twist, 1992
24. He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother (The Hollies) - Rufus Wainwright, 2001
25. Caravan Of Love (The Isley Brothers) - The Housemartins, 1986

Thanks for the Ciccone Youth reminder - I oughta add their karaoke version of "Addicted To Love" to my request list. And I thought my musical geekness this weekend was going to be finding personal audio cassette #327, taped from KVYN (Napa) in 1997... so far the highlights have been the original version of "6 Underground" and Erasure's "In My Arms".
Glad your aunt is better Sunday :)
RGMike, I can imagine your reaction to the "Tainted Love" and "Sea Of Love" requests. :o

Fogheads will be Fogheads -- someone also asked for Will to Powers' horrendous "Freebird/Baby I Love Your Way" trainwreck. And I screwed up myself, totally missing the '80s-centric part. So I re-posted and asked for
Boy George, "Everything I Own"
Elivis C, "Walking on Thin Ice"
Debbie Harry, "Liar Liar"
BTW, if ya like the Carpenters' "Ticket to Ride", you should hear them do the Buf Springfields's "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing"

Purely for academic reasons, I'd love to hear that! Our band used to play Clancy in the old days, and it's an interesting song, time signature wise. Curious how the Carpenters treatment went. I kind of liked their Please Mr. Postman.

Ooh...I wish I held onto my cassettes sometimes! Taping songs off the radio was a favorite pastime of mine, back in ye olden days (1980s)...
RG - Someone requested Puttin' On The Ritz...your favorite! ;)

OMG -- I did the same in the early '70s. To this day when I hear certain songs I expect them to be followed by the song that followed them on those old cassettes.
-
Personally, I find my pirated cassettes to be far more valuable than most of my actual albums.
-
Ooo...YES! BOS1 Bananarama - Na Na Na Hey, etc.
Glad she played this one!
-
instant BOS Bananarama (or "the 3 talentless slags" as one mean Brit critic called them). Sure beats hearing the original by Steam for the billionth time. Happy B-Day SG!
ah yes, English Beat's "Tears of a Clone, er, Clown"
-
I had no idea Bananarama had covered "Na Na Hey Hey!" Great start.
And happy birthday!
-
Ah, thanks fellas! :)
-
Bananarama's Greatest Hits includes a fair number of nuggets, including the Steam cover. There's also another cover, "Nathan Jones", as well as "Robert DeNiro's Waiting".

...talkin' Italian!
-
BOS for the English Beat. Great version.
-
BOS2 Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes. A bit overplayed, but I still likey.
-
I suddenly wish I had requested some Belle Stars.
-
I do love this Naked Eyes-does-Bacharach, so VHM. Seemed quite inspired at the time. Hoping for more lesser-played nuggets, tho'.
-
Happy bday sunday..!
I forgot about English Beat's Tears of a Clown. One of the best pop songs ever and one of my favorite remakes ever. BOS
and BOS2 to Burt Bacharach and Hal David covered by Nekkid Eyes!
-
BOS3 Crimson And Clover - Miss Joanie Jett
-
I suddenly wish I had requested some Belle Stars.
I have "Sign of the Times" on my '83 wish-list, tho' I don't think that was a cover.
Joan Jett thinks she could love her. I'll just bet you can, Joanie. VHM.
-
I suddenly wish I had requested some Belle Stars.
OMG love them! I always try to request Sign Of The Times when '83 rolls along.
-
I suddenly wish I had requested some Belle Stars.
Damn, I had forgotten about that one. Although, I had automatically assumed you meant "Iko Iko".
Dare somebody request Michael Damian's "Rock On" for one of these?

I heard it last week on Radio de Sebb, oddly.
BOS2 Ramones, "Baby I Love You". Joey's the only hetero male who wished he was Ronnie Spector.

I was actually thinking "The Clapping Song," but "Iko Iko" works too.
And I wouldn't mind hearing Damian's "Rock On"; it's been many years.
-
on FB, someone requested Little Bit Of Soul by the Ramones -- that would have been great, but this one ain't bad.
-
Least-necessary (by a mile): "Tide is High".
-
Well, I guess I've got to give an obligatory BOS to the Tide Is High, since it's Blondie and all. ;)
-
Least-necessary (by a mile): "Tide is High".
I agree (with all due respect to Sundaygal and her usual avatar.)
-
Jeez, the old farts are kvetching on FB about this set.
This is for every time I have to sit through a Steely Dan song during 10@10! Ha!

Eh, not my fave Blondie song and the most overplayed one too.

Same here!

it's a fab production and (again) back in the day it seemed quite inspired. But it's biggest-Katrina-of-set, so far.
-
OMFG!! BOS3 the damned Damned!
-
BOS4 Alone Again Or - The Damned. A stunning version that was on a mixtape a guy made for me in high school. Oh, how I wish I still had it!
-
ok, not so obscure, but Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart's cover of People Get Ready would have fit the bill here AND pleased the old Steely Dan fans.
Damn! this is good!
-

tape? or guy? ;)
-
YES! BOS5 Bauhaus doin' Ziggy!

Well, I be rolling tape on this set tonight! ;D

Bauhaus channeling the Muppets doing Bowie !

Jeez, the old farts are kvetching on FB about this set.
I saw that post complaining Bananarama were "butchering" a "fun song." Yeesh.
-
Bauhaus channeling the Muppets doing Bowie !
I used to think Ziggy was a "leather messiah", not a leper.
-
well, ya gotta have Bow Wow Wow doing "I want candy". It's, like, a law or something.
-
"Candy" - if you're not tappin' your feet or up dancing to this one, you is dead!
-
C30 C60 C90, GO - RG! Here's yer Bow Wow Wow. Man, these guys were such talented musicians. Totally underrated.
-
uber-BOS4 Clash, "Police on my Back" -- a welcome bustout from the seriously underplayed Sandinista!.
-
I Want Annabella Lwin! AND Candy!
BOS to Clash, luurve this one... She had to play this, she mentioned it all over Facebook and geez louise, what a cover it is.
-
Sounds like I'll have to DVR this set tonight... Sunday, you need to have birthdays more often!

Speaking of covers, one of my FB pals posted this link today. A classic Dylan tune being done by a band you (or at least I) never figured would have done Dylan. Definitely a WTF moment.

Maybe I (or one of you, hint hint) will request a girl groups set next time. I'm hellbent on hearing The Belle Stars now! ;)
