I'm not a Huey basher, but I always thought this was too Elvis Costello derived.
[Working for a Living, and yes, I know Clover was Elvis' backup band on his first album]
-
Huey? Aw, fooey! "Fooey" sez I. I don't care how big his schlong is.

Indeed it was, and that was de rigeur in '82, even if you weren't strictly speaking a "new wave" band. In this case it balanced the candy-coated Styx impression that was "Do You Believe in Love".

What are Words For?
it has that Barbie Doll sound.

well, Dave obviously cares

VHM Missing Persons -- warming up for their appearance on HMBOMT.
-
So, have I missed Missing Persons on "Hit My Shit One More Time"? Last time I saw Dale Bozi was on one of those VH1 "What The Fuck?" shows. She was a soccer mom in NJ. Kinda heftier- but she still had that crazy hair! Awesome.

Honorable Zeitgeist of Set: Talk/Talk

Talk Talk, "Talk Talk", Katrina Katrina
a by-the-numbers set today, methinks -- first day back from vacay, who can blame him?

Honorable Zeitgeist of Set: Talk/Talk
Although I always have trouble wondering if there's a connection in the name to the Music Machine hit of the 60's, I kinda like them. Nice drum sound.

she/they will be on this week. Talk Talk should be on their wish list, too, no?
OhMiGawd! Like, Square Pegs for, like, the totally billionth time! Gag me!

DYBIL was also an ELO impression; I'm surprised Huey wasn't sued for lifting the arrangement of the verses from "Sweet Talkin' Woman." Totally similar head.

Katrina 100.
So, was Haircut 100 one of the band names from Clockwork Orange, like Heaven 17 was?

Best Flashback of Set: this "wheels" song- which I wanna say is Robert Plant. So, who is it really?

no, it's really him -- turn in yer tambourine!
-
So, Haircut 100 wasn't the name of one of the Clockwork Orange bands. But, I found this page....
http://www.geocities.com/malcolmtribute/aco/acotop10.html
that lists the bands that are on a "Top 10" poster in the background. Cool.
-

LOL! I better keep it. The set is still young.
-
so where's that guy now, eh? the one predicting Tylenol would disappear?
"I Burn for You" -- this is from Brimstone & Treacle, no?

I think so. Yeah, this was when, apparently, too much Sting just wasn't enough for the world.

Did he ever find that woman-girl? (And is that like a Faulknerian man-child?)
-
I totally wanna be Johnny Zhivago...

too coincidental. I get these emails from an old friend now and then with spectacular web pages of exotic visits they have made, and lo and behold, pictures from the Marquesas:

Yes, they're just vacation pictures, but I do recommend checking them out. The whole bunch is here, and includes some nice desktop pix:

GAH! It's that Marshall Crenshaw song! I used to like it, though.
-

I think that was a reference to his pal Crosby. David liked 'em young.
-

It's a Mac Davis thang... "Girl, you're a hot-blooded woman-child".
-
ah, the obligatory Vic/Vic clip.
-
Dave's workin' his fave movie clips of '82.

The English Beat was my favorite Band circa 1982 - 1985 (even after they broke up)
-
The looong version. Neat!

a fine fine band. Known as The Beat in the UK, they added "English" here because there was already a new wave band called The Beat. And whatever became of them?

Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger formed General Public
Other members formed FYC
Most of them were on VH1 - Bands Reunited last Feb

BOS Roxy Music because it's not a Katrina. At least one that I can remember.

No, I meant whatever beame of that American band called The Beat (apparently they or their record company had threatened the English Beat with legal action). I think they split after one LP.

The Charlatans UK I imagine outlived tha original Charlatans, Grateful Dead had to change their name from The Warlocks. There's probably a pretty long list of bands how had to change their names who outlasted the originals.

Not quite. They were also known as Paul Collins' Beat, started here in SF but moved to LA, and put out two albums and an EP but never quite caught on, here or elsewhere. Their AMG bio makes ref to their forcing the other Beat to declare their nationality, but also calls their albums "power pop classics."

Thanks, urth -- I never made the connection that Paul Collins Beat = The Beat.

Something about that line coupled with your avatar is making me giggle like a drunk cheerleader.

"And it's warm where you're touching me." (creepiest line EVER nominee)
P.S. Not apropos of this topic, but Bob Christgau reviews the new biography on Sylvester in this week's Village Voice. Xgau's summary is interesting but I think I'll skip the book: it's 300 pages, and no one needs that much Sylvester. (Except, perhaps, for the choir member who deflowered Syl when the kid was 8.)
