No Labor day set here. AL leads off with the not-the-original-version of the Equals' "Baby Come Back" but makes up for it with the complete bass intro to "Tighten Up"
-
BOS even though I don't actually know how to do the Tighten Up.

BOS Rod & Jeff (I'm assuming it's that particular combo)
-
Breakfast at local diner, listening on new iPhone app. CCR and Jeff Beck sound great
-
VHM Wild in the Streets -- as Casey told us this weekend, the First Edition's drummer played the vice president!
BOS2 Max Frost. What a truly spectacular single.
Mmmmm... Vanilla Fudge for breakfast. VHM.

Sweet, thanks. I had assumed the Drells played their own instruments - so it would appear that they didn't appear on their sole #1 hit.

That was a great factoid. BOS2.

Rats, it's *the short version* of the Fudge's YKMHO.

WOS to this swinging wine-drinking song. Who celebrates Thunderbird?

BOS Electric Flag

WOS to this swinging wine-drinking song. Who celebrates Thunderbird?
er, poor people who can't afford Night Train.
-
BOS3 to one of the greatest instrumentals ever. And speaking of artists not appearing on their #1 hits, here's another in the form of vocalist Cliff Nobles.

uber-BOS3 Miss Nina!

In minor roles, Monkee Peter Tork, 'Brady' Barry Williams and Bobby Sherman!
And four songs from the soundtrack:

a rare day of listening over-the-air. I remember this set, not that AL's had any bad '60s sets this year.

TANC-of-the-Day: flipped over to KPOO and heard the orig of "Drinkin' Wine Spo-dee-o-dee"! (by Stick Magee)
KPOO's "dirty blues" lady, in honor of Labor Day picnicking, is playing all songs about food. "mah baby owns an ice-cream freezer -- she lets me put mah milk in her can". (!)

Indeed she did. Unintentionally hilarious (the original "tits" would never have gotten on the air).
I didn't realize Tork was in Wild in the Streets! Must acquire soon. Now that I have a roommate, perhaps a Netflix subscription is on the horizon.

No Labor day set here.
At first I wondered why they didn't rerun last year's Labor Day set, but then realized AL didn't do one then either.
So I dug out my cassette of Dave's brilliant, uber-political 2007 set. Damn, that was Mr Morey at his inimitable, screw-the-suits best.
1. Huey Lewis & the News - Workin' For a Living
2. Jeff Beck - Get Workin'
3. Cate Brothers - Union Man
4. Strawbs - Part of the Union
5. Randy Newman - Mr. President, Have Pity on the Working Man
6. John Lennon - Working Class Hero
7. Bruce Springsteen - My Hometown
8. Stan Ridgeway - I Wanna Be a Boss
9. Bob Dylan - Union Sundown
10. Johnny Paycheck - Take This Job and Shove it
Had to listen in the car, as my nearly-20-year-old SONY cassette deck decided to give up the ghost -- do they still make them anymore?

That sounded really familiar, so I took a peek in the Shraytabase to see if I had it recorded. I do--but I discovered that this set also served as the 2006 and 2008 Labor Day sets. Not only that, the one from 2004 (there wasn't one in '05) bears a few distinct similarities to this one: namely, it starts with the same two songs, ends with the same song, and has one other song in common (the Cate Bros. tune). So even though Dave felt some solidarity with his unionized brethren, it wasn't so much so that he felt compelled to create a new piece for them every year.
And to answer your question about cassette players, yes they do. But most of them come with USB outputs to make digitizing your cassette library more convenient--and eventually rendering your new machine obsolete as well.
