"Knockin on Heaven's Door" -- not exactly TOTHC material, but it'll do. The song Dylan should've won an Oscar for...

A pleasant surprise indeed, and those feathery America harmonies sound especially nice this morning.

Indeed, my fave "lost" America song... Top 40 early that year but not huge and little-heard since.

"Let the bad guy win every once in a while" -- the segue potential for 1973 is *immense*.

Time for another show of hands, this one a two-parter:

(a) How many of you used to think this song was pronounced "Dye-er Make-er"?

(b) How many of you have had to mispronounce it that way to elicit recognition from someone who didn't recognize the title as pronounced as "Jermaker"?

(Gaz lifts both hands after looking furtively around the room)

Yes. And yes.

It wasn't until decades later that the title was explained to me.

God, I don't remember.  I'm sure I was pronouncing it wrong at some point in my life.  Though this wasn't a song I discussed much.  And I'm not one to feel much embarrassment when I mispronounce an odd name.  Though I did turn mighty red the first time I tried to pronounce Goethe in an English Lit class at SF State...

Show of hands part deux:

How many thought Dobie Gray was singing "gimme the Beach Boys and free my soul..."?

Anyone know offhand who produced "Drift Away"?  As overplayed as the song has been over the years, it still stands out as terrific songwriting and a marvelously intricate production.  Can't help but remain impressed all these years later.

Beej Of Set! "Little Willy"!!

I half-expect the "Gay Pimp" guy who did that stupid "Soccer Practice" song to recast this song as "Pole Smoking in the Boys' Room."

VHM S&C "Diamond... Person." This still begs for an R&B cover by somebody.

My BOS vote goes to "Diamond Girl."  I know I'm supposed to dislike Seals & Crofts because of their abortion commentary on Unborn Child, but this and "Hummingbird" and "Summer Breeze" are simply magnificent productions.

Whitburn says "Rock On" charted on 1/12/74, but why quibble over a couple weeks?  Mebbe the album hit prior ...

I have NO idea what you're talking about.

OK, Bob's "when it was released" rule sometimes seems silly, as with "Rock On" which is a 1974 song by anybody's standards -- unless you're British.

quibble Jinx!

it was a hit in the UK in the summer of '73, but for US purposes, it's a '74 song.

BTW have you ever seen Essex's film Stardust

On the KFOG morning show they were talking about "the creepies of World Class Rock", artists you find creepy for whatever reason, lifestyle (MJ), politics (Ted Nugent), etc.  And of course the consensus was: separate the music from the artist.
