I'll hologram it for ya.

Amusing fact(oid)s from Wikipedia:

The song was inspired by an episode in which Iggy Pop, during a drug-fuelled period at Bowie’s LA home, hallucinated and believed the television set was swallowing his girlfriend. Beyond oblique references to absorption via television, the lyrics are largely nonsensical. Bowie himself hasn’t been able to shed any light on their meaning beyond the Pop anecdote, having very limited recollection of the Station to Station sessions, due to his own heavy drug use at the time.

The song is considerably more upbeat than the rest of the album. It was chosen as a second single from the album in the UK, where it reached #33. With Bowie unable to perform on the show, Top of the Pops promoted the single with a bizarre interpretation from resident dance troupe Ruby Flipper. The B-side, “We Are the Dead”, originally formed part of Bowie’s attempt to adapt Nineteen Eighty-Four, and had previously been released on the Diamond Dogs album.

In America, "Stay" was preferred as a second single from the album.

ETA: also this

On December 14, 1979 Bowie performed TVC 15 as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live, accompanied by Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias.

I remember seeing that.  I thought "he's one strange dude".

which dude are you speaking of?

I loved that sequence.  If you ever get a chance to watch The Nomi Song, do it.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402406/

great document of the beginnings of the East Village hipster scene, and Nomi's role.

BOS to all three songs so far... love it.

we very nearly JINXed there -- saw that film at the Castro when it was released; one of my fave docus of the past decade. Really captures the NY scene of the late '70s/early '80s.

Yeah, when I wrote that I was actually thinking "maybe I should have said 'those are some strange dudes'".  Quotation mania!  But yeah, the backing people were just as strange, though I was mainly focused on Bowie.

V-V-V-VHM "Cherry Bomb."

BOS to the mighty KISS, with the same declining piano chords appearing in the coda of "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO1LbkuPfqo)

Could be. He was a well-known fan and supporter of the Pythons, so why not Mel Brooks, too?

Meanwhile, we're not talkin' 'bout my linen...

Another BOS from Marty and the gang.  This song and the last one are really what 76 sounded like to me.

And speaking of Blazing Saddles, today is Gene Wilder's 75th birthday.  They played "Puttin' on the Ritz" on KPIG this morning to celebrate.

And amusing to hear it when we got "Cruisin'," also from the Spitfire album, twice in a week.  Now I need someone to play "St. Charles" this afternoon.

Rod wondered, if I understood correctly, what the fuck would England Dan and John Ford Coley do if they had a Jefferson Starship.

Lacking a better answer, I hypothesized: Love is the answer.

Still workin' on Gaz's, but I was just playing with the what would jesus do (WWJD) which I always change into WTFWJD and kind of stuck England Dan and John Ford Coley in there because it took me a minute to figure THAT out when Mike posted it and I didn't really know who did the song and then a Jefferson Starship sounds like cool thing to have.  As you can see in my sig, I am full up to here with acronyms and I may have gone insane.   ;D
