Dave seeks suggestions: mornings@kfog.com
-
I'll miss the set, alas: filling in at the Voice for a copy edit shift. A virtual suggestion for Stevie Wonder's "Contusion," though.

I requested "Hill St Blues" for, like, the tenth time.

And I, once again, have requested J Geils "Whammer Jammer."
-
I predict something from Jeff Beck, which will be welcome, and something from Eric Johnson, which I'm pretty much over.
-
keep copious notes, kids... I'm off to an extremely boring meeting (like there's any other kind!).
-
Dave just tipped two of the songs--Madison Time, and Slaughter on 10th Avenue (natch, he mentioned Mick Ronson).
-
My first BOS - Fire On High ... KFOG doesn't play this often enough.
-
not that it would've done any good, but my life's ambition is to get KFOG to play "The Supernatural" by Peter Green, an SF FM classic

For the record, the first song was the original version of a song that appeared in an ad campaign in the last year or so--and it's been in a 10@10 set, but I can't recall the name--it goes "Ooh hoo, oooh hoo hooo" ad nauseam.
2nd song was Fire on High.
Third song is--my gawd, the Dixie Dregs, with Geoff's pal Andy West on bass. These guys were monsters! Is this Cruise Control, Geoff?

Thanks for the id -- my first BOS. The guitar player is channeling JB.

the only song Duane Allman wrote (or so that used to be the legend)

That's Steve Morse, who has had an interesting career post-Dregs. An amazing guitarist, one of the most technically proficient you'll ever see. He later filled in the guitar seat when Kansas reformed, and lately he's been taking Richie Blackmore's role in Deep Purple. And it seems like he's played with a couple of other classic rock reformations. But he also works as an airline pilot when he's not tearin' up the frets.

Tasty.

Me too, I thought this is possibly Beck or else someone doing an inspired hommage.
Ooooh, another BOS for the ABB. Sweet sounds. But I prefer the version on the Dreams compilation that restoed the bass line.
-
the only song Duane Allman wrote (or so that used to be the legend)
In any case this was his last recording.
-
It appears Dave's not taking BOS votes today, at least not via YIM. He's not signed on.
ETA: The Mick Ronson track followed Little Martha.

I wasn't listening that close. Andy is a close friend, but I've never been a Dregs fan that much. When he used to play at our booth at the NAMM show (musical instrument trade show), fans would come up and shout "Cruise Control" at him!

Steve Morse is such an ascended master, I doubt he needs to channel Jeff Beck, but he's also a real nice guy, so maybe he was!

cue Geoff's old story about the yellow corvette

He certainly sounded like Beck there, is all, circa Blow by Blow, Wired.
-
Booker T's Hang 'em High followed Slaughter, and then Madison Time.

I would certainly suggest you see Steve Morse if you get the chance; I think you'd like him.

I am really groovin' on this Madison Time, whichI have never heard before.
"Now when I say "Hit it!" I want a nice strong Jackie Gleason, and back to the mat."
-
BOS "Birdland"
Jaco is God.
-
Weather Report, written by bassist Jaco Pastorius. Dig the fretless bass harmonics
-
My BOS2 - Birdland :)

You must see the movie

Same here. I'm gonna BOS it with a Cleveland Box and then I'm headin back to the matt...
HIT IT!

BOS "Birdland"
Jaco is God.
Second virtuoso bassist of set: Jaco.
Trivia: what do Steve Morse and Jaco Pastorius have in common (as well as several other members of the Dregs, I believe)? Also Pat Metheny.
-
Weather Report, written by bassist Jaco Pastorius. Dig the fretless bass harmonics
I read in an interview that he was quite poor growing up & had a really crappy little AM radio which made the guitars sound like his bass does in this song. So that was always how the music souded in his head & thus how it came out when he played.
Kind of like finding out that VanGogh & Monet painted the way they did because they actually saw things that way, due to eyesight problems.

Just got out of a meeting my BOS is Weather Report
-
"Birdland" is awesome. Didn't Krazy Glue adapt it for a jingle at some point- or did I just imagine that?

I know the connection between Matheny & Jaco, but not anyone else.
-
Finally some Beck, to please the fans 8)
-
And the crystal ball award goes to Mshray or Rod--whichever one called out for Jeff Beck. And wasn't Since We've Ended As Lovers mentioned earlier this week when we were discussing Stevie Wonder?
-
This is my favorite instrumental, period.
-

me on the Beck, Gaz on the Stevie.
btw, does this mean we aren't gonna hear the other Stevie?

Well, this was my alternate suggestion to Dave, since I knew he wouldn't be playing the J. Geils...

So what are you thinking of? Jaco played on Metheny's first record, Bright Size Life, but that's not it.

if you want to hear it, just email me, and I'll see that you hear it.
-
Late VHM - Herb Alpert

yeah, I know that they played together in the early 70's, but rather doubted that it was with the other guys you mentioned.

Urth, will this get archived? I'd sure like to save it.

I'll try, but can't promise.
The answer I was looking for with the trivia question is that all (Morse, Metheny, & Jaco) were graduates (or at least attended--Jaco may not have graduated) of the jazz program at University of Miami. Lots of great players came out of that school--Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein went there as well, and I think Mike Stern did too.

Ventures Walk Don't Run
I called up Annalisa, and it's the "Walk Don't Run '64" version
-
Ventures Walk Don't Run
You must be listening on an actual radio, because you posted before it started on the internet. Really bad reception downtown today...

10 minutes before the replay of "Strictly Instrumental" and Big Rick plays... an instrumental! (ABB, "Jessica")

I was amused by that as well. And 15 minutes before that, a near-instrumental from Mocean Worker.
So how come none of you made note of Dave's disclaimer about the "Madison Time" dance calls -- "totally different head"? I can't remember the last time he referenced one of his own clips!

Not sure what you mean; must have missed something
-
listening the second time around, they kind of sound like a Southern-fried Weather Report, knowing we're going to hear Birdland soon. Andy's really pumping the bassline, eh?
-
this morning, some clubmembers had not heard this before, so I can't stress enough the need to see Hairspray. The scene where they are dancing to this is freakin' hilarious.
And away we go...
referencing Birdland! Which is a cool segue indeed.

6/10/05 - FRIDAY!!!!! Today we are...Strictly Instrumental!!!
Rock-A-Teens - Woo Hoo
ELO - Fire on High
Dregs - Cruise Control
Young Holt Unlimited - Soulful Strut
Allman Brothers - Little Martha
Mick Ronson - Slaughter on 10th Avenue
Booker T & the MGs - Hang 'Em High
Ray Bryant Combo - Madison Time
Weather Report - Birdland
Jeff Beck - 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers
BONUS TRACK: The Ventures - Walk Don't Run '64

I was curious to see if I could find out who played bass on the JB tune, and it turns out to be Phil Chenn, someone else I've had the pleasure to meet. Really nice guy. Raised in Jamaica, it's interested to watch this Chinese-looking guy talk. I only met Jaco once, so counting Andy, I've met three of the bass players in today's 10@10! That and 1.50 will get me a grande at Starbucks, right?
:o :o :o

When Dave distinguished the dance calls from "singing," he called the former a "totally different head," a reference to a "Square Pegs" clip he often plays in 1982. ("Are you punk?" "No. Way. I'm New Wave. Totally different head. Totally.")

Listening to the instrumental set again this morning (kicking off the marathon, I assume), I find myself wishing Herb Alpert's "A Taste of Honey" had been in the set instead of only being used in the back-announce. I don't win cool points for saying this, but I love a lot of Herb's '60s output.

Gaz, do you agree that the Mocean Worker cut is an awful lot like US3's "Cantaloop" (if not a blatant rip-off of same)?
-
Just checking thru the archives to compare yesterday's Strictly Instrumental with a couple I have from past dates. Both of the previous ones have two songs in common with yesterday's set: Slaughter on 10th Avenue and Hang 'Em High in one, Fire on High and The Woo Hoo Song (although not the original version we heard yesterday) in the other.
And also significant: yesterday's was the second Strictly Instrumental set we've heard in 2005--there was one barely two months ago, in early April. If this means that the SI theme is returning to popularity, we ought to start coming up with a few new suggestions to keep the genre fresh. And I don't think they have to be too Strictly Instrumental. Madison Time notwithstanding, if ELO's Fire on High (which has a chorus in the background repeating the title phrase numerous times) qualifies, then I would think something like the Young Fresh Fellows' Taco Wagon (which appeared in a food theme set last year) would make it too.
And yes, 'shray, last night's set is in the queue to be archived.

Absotively, posilutely, and THANK YOU for catching this.

well, thank YOU for confirming that I wasn't imagining things. The irony is that KFOG never played "Cantaloop" back in '94. Understandably, I suppose, as the audience back then would've deemed it "too hip-hop". Times change!

I've always thought so too, but I coulda sworn it already came up in our rambling discussions before this. Oh well.
On a different note, I'm off to Seattle in a short while, probably hear today's set while driving over to OAK. Back late tomorrow night. I am invited to the Microsoft XBox 360 Summit, their big roll-out. Urth, I have to imagine there will be a contingent from CNet there as well. And Gaz, you remember meeting my friend Steve, I'll be crashing at his house tonight (but not his houseboat).
See y'all on Wed.

Cool! Give Steve my greetings! Very cool guy. Also, if you meet a Microsoft guy named Geordie Wilson, tell him I said hi (I met him in my sole visit to the MS campus; he gave me an extended demo on the then-latest iteration of Windows Media Player for Digital Music Weekly).

Hmmm. I suppose we may have someone there, although it's more likely someone from our sister site, Gamespot. We did give the 360 some big coverage in our E3 (big gaming trade show in LA) package a couple of weeks back. Anyway--have fun up north & check in here when you can.

I'll definitely say Hi to Steve for you & I'll an eye out for Geordie.
Gotta go now.
