Title: 29 March 2010: 1983
Post by: RGMike on March 29, 2010, 10:04:56 AM
Huey's "Heart & Soul" would not be out-of-place on a McCartney LP.

so, Chris Isaak Friday, Huey today... can Percy be far behind?  AL likes the big boys.

VHM Red Rockers.  I think the Huey was a bustout; certainly a rarity.

An innocuous start to the set -- pretty unusual but not much of a kooker.

"China" is what the eighties sounded like to me, though not quite as whiny as my least favorite stuff.

Wow, I didn't know there was a System and that this was a cover.  I'll have to check it out.

always liked that Red Rockers song, BOS.  I recall WHFS in Wash DC playing it one day at a slower speed, not on purpose, they must've had the 45 and started it at 33 rpm. I told my friends, "Hey, this song is too slow" and the then jock corrected the speed and my friends were all impressed with me.   :)

uber-BOS English Beat ska-ifying Andy Williams' "Can't Get Used to Losing You". (I loved the original when I was 8!)

I'll second that.  They're some of the real class of the 80s.  And nice of them to let the non-lead singer (I gotta read up on these guys...) do a couple verses.

I'm gonna give a BOS to Genesis for "Just a Job to Do", mostly because my band played it.  I did that guitar part.  It's a lot of work!

oh these newfangled computer thingys are so confusing!

Phil & Genesis begin an assault on the charts that would last... entirely too long.

You mean Dave Wakeling, the blond guy?  he pretty much sang at least half the time.  Ranking Roger was the other singer, who did mostly ska dubbing singing.  Check out their big hits, like "Mirror in the Bathroom," and you hear Dave singing the verses.  He still tours around as the English Beat.  He's got a great voice.  I think he lives in Marin now.

VHM for the Burning Sensations.  This still sounds good to me, even though it's gotten tons of airplay.

BOS3 to Genesis.

I'll give them a nod, too.  Although I probably said I didn't like when they went commercial back then, I have an appreciation for their later stages.

it's a good album:

I wonder if "There's an Ointment for That" would be a good name for a band.  Or at least an album title.

The problem was that things just kept getting worse (and of course more successful) from here.

Holy Toledo - a U2 song I've never heard before?  Plenty of cowbell.

Almost sounded like "Working for the Weekend" at the beginning.

Not a bad set, particularly for '83. And remarkable that the first song and last song tied for BOS. I don't recall that ever happening before. I'd have voted for the English Beat and Aztec Camera songs, had I been able to listen. Too much going on today--meetings with contractors and subs, meeting with dairy fabricator, and five+ hours doing actual cheese stuff. Oh, and two hours in the car. My day started at 7am, and it's just now ending. And I'm wiped.

(Perhaps this would be more appropriate in the I'm Tryin' To Tell You Somethin'... thread. Oh well--if I had more energy I'd move it.)
